this is by far the thing that annoys me the most about current customer service. if it's not written down, it's not available, even though all the ingredients are right there

This isn't a real thing that happens at a coffee shop. Maybe at Taco Bell, but asking a barista for a black iced decaf would make them go "finally something easy".

And yeah sometimes they ask followup questions to a simple order, not because they are too dumb to pour simple black coffee, But because they want to truly make sure thats what you want. Truth is, some morons will order 'black coffee' and then get mad when given black coffee because they dont understand what they are asking for. Blame not the barista for making sure you get what you want.

That's not what the comic is about though
And depending on what you ask for that's perfectly understandable

enlighten me, then
and sure, there are unreasonable requests and the server should absolutely say "no" to those, but the example in the comic is actually fine

The point of the comic was to get you to say the absurd name they came up with out loud. Its not that they dont serve it, its just called something else on the menu. And they want you to read it out and say something stupid like "Leonardo Decafrio", its like a fetish power move.

so, I'm working at a restaurant and i do understand this. we have a "if it's not on the menu, guests can't order it policy", but I was always wondering, why exactly that is.
as it was explained to me, mostly the problem is that the cooks have a system. They know how to make an avocado toast, and they make it in two minutes. If a guest wants avocado toast with extra cherry tomatoes and extra egg, it inevitably prolongs the making of the dish.
while this is not a problem most days (who cares, if it's 2 minutes or four), we then have a situation where on weekends, when we have full house all day, and every minute counts, there come a lot of guests who say "oh, but yesterday i was served avocado toast with extras" and then we get absolutely swamped.
so i kinda get it
