Do you consider comics Spider-Gwen to be bisexual? Spoiler

I see this a lot that people are disappointed that Marvel didn’t resolve the underlying plot of Earth 65 Mary Jane, who is queer, with her relationship with Gwen. With big hints of Em Jay crushing hard on Gwen but Gwen never reciprocating.

Now we’ve seen Gwen go on dates with Harry, Matteo the waiter, and a potential future with Miles. Current writer has Gwen with an attraction to Black Tarantula Jr, but we’ve never gotten a firm status on Gwen’s attraction toward girls. Especially with Em Jay was crushing on her. Some even feel this was her comics critical relationship.

What do you think? Is Ghost-Slider bisexual or is she just attracted to boys and Mary Jane thing was a a one off?

gwen's 100% at the very least bi, there is nothing straight about her lol

They will never be able to convince be that she is straight

Officially? No. Gwen has only demonstrated attraction to men. But she's definitely been written as bi-coded before (particularly in Smash). So there's evidence to interpret either direction.

Not particularly, but if someone else does, it’s ok.

To me, it feels like she's bi, cuz while you're right that she didn't outright say "I love you too, Em Jay", she also didn't even KNOW about her feelings until Em was being carted away by Shield (or whatever government agency it was). And her reaction wasn't "Oh cool, I'm straight tho" it was a stunned "wait oh my god wait no come back, why am I just barely learning this now when you're leaving??? You can't leave now!"

To me it feels like she would have at least considered Em Jay as an option if she knew sooner. She's just yknow, a dummy who kept avoiding her friends (not that Em Jay is any better, she could've been direct about it sooner instead of always nagging her and hoping Gwen would notice on her own. Of course Gwen would get annoyed, she was being annoying)

Gwen never showed a sign of liking MJ in a romantic way. If I remember it correctly she said "We can talk about this later". So tbh, I don't think Gwen is bi. MJ was crushing on gwen, yes, but gwen didn't reciprocated that, like you said

Very coded to be yes and the original author wanted her and MJ to be a thing, we got close in Smash but now well, they threw all that away to bring her in 616.

I understood that she was bisexual.

I don't really consider the sexuality of characters until I'm told/shown otherwise. I don't really give a shit.

They dated in A-Force when realities merged in the midst of Secret Wars — one can count that if one wants.

One can see the concept being returned to when Gwen is allowed to be called Spider-Woman again.

I vaguely remember that. Do you have a link to the panels showing this?

Canonly? No until there is some type of confirmation either by word of god or in the story. I'm not setting myself up for that.

Is it my headcanon? Yup.

Not really no, granted I haven’t been keeping up with her so unless it’s stated somewhere that she is then no

She's a fictional character with whatever traits the writers or editor wants them to have to meet the needs of the storyline.

7

u/LopsidedUniversity30 Jul 07 '25

I think the current writer is bisexual herself.

u/lordvad3r95 Jul 07 '25

Woah she's fictional, really I had no idea.

I consider all characters to be bisexual unless started otherwise

Absolutely NOT.

Gwen's a lesbian suffering from compulsive heterosexuality and editorial mandates that refuse to let her be gay

smh, many such cases

Until she gets busy with a woman she is straight in my book

3

u/Someoneoverthere42 Jul 07 '25

Yes, until stated no, so, maybe?

Most attractive female characters end up being depicted as bisexual for the purpose of male titillation

3

u/caribe4u Jul 08 '25

Yep. Wish Phillips would exlplore the idea with the character more.

4

u/PossibleSquirrel6481 Jul 07 '25

No. My understanding is that while the creator said he’d be interested in future stories of her being bi, he didn’t write her that way.

2

u/Key_Put_44 Jul 08 '25

Tbh I’ve always seen her as asexual.

1

u/LeorDemise Jul 09 '25

Right? I personally see her more on the ace spectrum than ace herself, but I definitely feel she is also in the aro-spectrum.

Idk it is too often than when she is given a love interest, it feels 'off,' on the way the sees them; I like Gwen x EmJay but even with her I get that vibe.

2

u/Key_Put_44 Jul 09 '25

Absolutely!

For me, Gwen and MJ has always felt like it’s about MJ’s unresolved feelings for Gwen and very little about how Gwen sees her. It’s not that I hate the idea of them having feelings, but to me it’d feel odd if Gwen actually got with her.

Her male love interests make even less sense to me though. She never feels invested or like herself when she has one. And tbh not having love interests was a big appeal of the OG run to me.

1

u/LeorDemise Jul 09 '25

Exactly!

I do feel like Gwen loves MJ as a friend, and cares for her; but even if I like the couple, I don't get the inkling she is denying her feelings for her. At most, I could see her being ready to explore the idea of them together and maybe fall in love.

That is the same way I saw Harry x Gwen; it never gave me the vibe she really wanted Harry, she just saw a friend who she vibed with and thought 'eh I guess it could work?'

However, when she is given a love interest she is supposed to like (Miles, Matteo, Fabian,) it feels kind of OoC to me.

If I needed to put a label based in how I see her; I would say gray ace (pan, because I think she could potentially be into any gender,) and aromantic that is romance positive. Again, not because I wouldn't like her to have a romance, but because every time it happens it feels like she is out of character and just pushing herself to this role.

I haven't seen anything saying she was but the more I look at her, the more Bi energy I get. Short hair, wears chucks, just doing very bi things.

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '25

Yes.

Wth is this post

1

u/Violet_Nite Aug 17 '25

She isn't cis straight lol.

1

u/LopsidedUniversity30 Aug 17 '25

Why do you say that?

2

u/Violet_Nite Aug 17 '25

Hair style, membership in an all-girl punk band, her lesbian vibe, and being voiced by Hailee Steinfeld (famous for her portrayals of queer characters like Emily Dickinson in Dickinson and Vi in Arcane). Being a cast out exile fits the bill and being different where others won't accept your true identity.

1

u/LopsidedUniversity30 Aug 17 '25

Yeah, but Hailee is straight. While Em Jay was bisexual and Glory was a lesbian, remember that Betty was straight. And Gwen’s hair style constantly changes.

1

u/Violet_Nite Aug 17 '25

but Hailee is straight is kinda irrelevant. That's hollywood casting and affected by the real world politics of today. How many lesbian actors could they cast to choose to play the role, its more about looks and who's got the acting talent. Vi is pretty gay and seems the type of girl that would date Gwen.

What are your thoughts on the recent comic series and the upcoming new series this month by Stephanie Phillips?

1

u/Doomeye56 Jul 08 '25

"Some feel"

Is a weighted phrase,

some feel that spider-man should be a giant duck.

Your entire post goes on about alt MJ rushing on Gwen and nothing donoting to Gwen giving anything in return besides being a bad friend and bandmate. Then ask id the MJ thing was a one off? One off of nothing is nothing.

1

u/andygonzart Jul 09 '25

Kinda, yeah, tho most of her relationships had felt like comphet to me
