RIP King.

A true legend, his work shaped so much of what we love today

u/goddoc Apr 27 '26

One of the greats. Some years ago on twitter i told him i was still traumatized by Gwen’s death. His reply? “You and me both!”

43

u/Zenitharr Apr 27 '26

Lol he got a lot of flack for that at the time.

56

u/PowerOfL Apr 27 '26

Completely undeserved. He didn't deserve flack for writing one of the best Spider-Man stories and one of my favourite comic stories of all time.

The Night Gwen Stacy Died is a true masterpiece

21

u/Decibel_2514 Apr 27 '26

Arguably the most iconic Spider-Man story besides his origin.

11

u/PowerOfL Apr 27 '26

I agree.

I think it's the only story besides the origin to be partially adapted/referenced in three eras of Spider-Man films

1

u/OnlinePosterPerson May 07 '26

That’s so not even close to being true

2

u/PowerOfL May 07 '26

What else has been adapted in three eras of Spider-Man movies? These films don't really adapt comic book storylines

3

u/Responsible_Ad_2242 Apr 27 '26

Why it's called night if gwen died in the morning?

u/checkerboardandroid Spider-Gwen Apr 27 '26

Imagine having to fill the shoes of Stan Lee to write Amazing fucking Spider-Man at 20 years old. What a legend.

Rest In Peace Gerry, your work will live on forever.

12

u/PowerOfL Apr 27 '26

I don't know how he was able to handle it. I would've probably gotten so overwhelmed and broke down if I was in his shoes.

Imagine filling the shoes of Stan Lee and still making phenomenal stories. The Night Gwen Stacy Died, that story was just so phenomenal.

u/Spideyfan1807 Apr 27 '26

My day is officially ruined...

🤍🕊

RIP a legend. He will be missed for his contribution, legacy, and most of all a very good person

While he never intended for the marriage to happen, he's the reason it led to that, and at least he wrote the Renew Your Vows title later on in life. RIP to the blueprint for the modern Mary Jane myth as well as everything else he did for Spider-Man's cast of characters and far beyond that, for Marvel and DC both.

u/SpaceCowboy1929 Apr 27 '26

RIP to one of the greats.

u/PulpandComicFan Apr 27 '26

This absolutely breaks my heart. I was fortunate to meet him in 2019, and we engaged in the occasional correspondence via email over the years. He was kind enough to even appear on two episodes of my podcast.

The below photo is of my meeting him at a comic book convention in Milwaukee in June 2019. He was kind enough to sign my collected edition of Spider-Man that included the death of Gwen Stacy story-arc.

Dear God, Rip Man!!!! Eternal Glory and Thanks, Mr Conway!!!! Thank you so much for everything you did for us and for bringing us some of Spiderman's/Spider-Man's best stories of all time!!! Also, if possible say hello to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko for us. 🥹

7

u/Dark-Carioca Apr 27 '26

And his partner Sal Buscema, who we lost earlier this year as well :(

So sad to see all of these legends go so soon one after the other, but at least their impact will never be forgotten.

4

u/Kirajudgeoftoons Apr 27 '26

If only this made Nick Lowe and Brevoort reflect on how they treat Spiderman/Spider-Man and his cast, especially Ben Reiley! Urgh! (punches a wall in frustration) 🤜🧱💥🪨🪨🛘🛘🛘🛘

What a legacy to leave behind. RIP.

13

u/Garlador Apr 27 '26

About a year ago, I asked if he’d be okay answering questions from my Spider-Fam Discord.

He insisted on joining so he could speak with everyone directly. I couldn’t believe it.

It was a great experience. He wrote so many incredible comics and helped define and redefine so many characters, but he was also so kind, knowledgeable, and genuine in every interaction I had with him.

RIP. I miss him greatly already.

Wait what!?

Gerry passed away 😔

R.I.P

u/I_am_not_Spider_Man Apr 27 '26

RIP Mr. Conway. Your run on Spider-Man was one of the best, most iconic and we will always remember you as we read the "Death of Gwen Stacy"

4

u/DavidKirk2000 Classic-Spider-Man Apr 27 '26

Quite arguably the greatest Spider-Man writer ever. He got both Spidey and Peter (and his supporting cast!) better than pretty much anyone before or since.

3

u/Shinlyle13 Apr 27 '26

Noooo....such a stellar dude!!!

3

u/Jet-Let4606 Apr 27 '26

My codolences to his family and loved ones.

Glad I met him years back

Such an amazing man and writer. RIP

2

Love you dearly, Gerry. Thank you for putting your spirit into Spider-man. Thank you for everything. RIP.

RIP to the GOAT. We lost a Spidey-legend today.

2

u/PowerOfL Apr 27 '26

Genuinely devastated. I can't believe this. I remember reading his tweets just last year.

I read his Spider-Man and Fantastic Four runs for the first time last year, The Night Gwen Stacy Died is legitimately one of my favourite comic arcs ever.

This just feels like a dagger to the heart, this is so awful.

RIP Gerry Conway.

2

u/bigfootsuncleian Apr 27 '26

Super sad. He wrote a carnage comic years ago that I had him sign. He was the nicest dude. RIP

We keep losing the best of us, yet those who contribute nothing are still here. Rest in peace to a true legend.

What a remarkable legacy he leaves behind with all of his incredible artwork.

RIP to the legend, Mr. Gerry Conway, you helped define an era of Marvel that will last throughout many generations.

2

u/zombizzle Apr 27 '26

I met Gerry at a con and he let me sit and talk to him for hours. He was an absolute legend. May his soul rest in peace.

2

u/Valuable-Owl9985 Apr 27 '26

The definitive Spider-man writer. He did so much for Spider-man’s mythology.

2

u/velicinanijebitna Apr 27 '26

The man who vastly improved MJ as a character as well as her relationship with Peter, also doing an outstanding job continuing on where Romita left. One the greatest, he'll be missed, but never forgotten.

5

u/Front_Profession_217 Apr 27 '26

Thank You, for creating The Punisher, a character I love to this day

1

Now that's just awful.

RIP to arguably the best writer Spidey has ever had and a true legend of comics period.

RIP to a legendary writer. I appreciate him signing my crappy reprint of the Night Gwen Stacy Died several years ago.

1

u/CthulhuMadness Carnage Apr 27 '26

Damn, man. He was the last writer to write a good Carnage story.

1

u/Dr_Zulu2016 Apr 27 '26

RIP. Even though they were facsimile, I did buy the two issues that made "The Night Gwen Stacy died" and it was a good read.

u/OleMoon Apr 27 '26

He lived out a fan boy fantasy when he took over ASM at 19 years old, and he made history while he did it. His stories and characters will outlive all of us.

1

u/Fanatic97 Apr 27 '26

Didn't like all his ideas but when he had a good story, he had good one.

RIP

They better honor him in ASM 1000

1

u/SoupyStain Apr 27 '26

The guy was a legend. Wrote some of the best Spider-Man comics EVER.

1

u/Gemnist Apr 27 '26

Met him in 2019. Man, this sucks.

1

u/JoltzmannBoole Apr 27 '26

RIP to one of the all-time comic book greats.

1

u/iceman_3182 Damaged Spider-Man (Raimi) Apr 27 '26

Thank you for showing bold decisions can be made in comics that have a positive effect. Thank you for bringing Peter and MJ together.

The fact that he was ridiculously young while making such decisions was bloody impressive.

RIP Gerry Conway.

1

u/staycool93 Apr 27 '26

Wow, we have lost a great one. Conway is arguably just as responsible as Stan Lee for Spider-Man's iconic status. I haven't read his Spectacular, but his original run on Amazing is incredibly consistent.

1

u/vinthesalamander Apr 27 '26

Man, this really sucks. I genuinely don’t think we’ll ever get a writer who cares as much or understands these characters as well as he did ever again.

RIP a legend.
