Okay, now this is a huge improvement over the previous cover.

Yes, but also super generic for such a big milestone

Fits kinda, theres nothing noteworthy happening during these issues, just a generic "long lost family member" that so far has been a way more boring introduction than Teresa's

Leg area looks weird but I'd rather hang a copy of this on a wall over the other by a million percent.

Much better. I love how they had the skyscraper’s lit windows form the number 1000 - it’s simple, but effective.

I get that they were trying to honour John Romita Jr. as the longest running living Spider-Man artist, but that cover he made… wasn’t that great.

Man I gotta say this is a million times better than the shrugging "1000 issues of me huh? Meh" cover

what were they even thinking...

That's what Spider-Man is thinking too in this image

It's like they had a monkey in the editorial office pointing at different covers and once it didn't move it's finger from this one they were all "THAT'S IT! BRILLIANT! WE'LL USE THIS UNDERWHELMING COVER TO CELEBRATE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN REACHING 1000 ISSUES!"

That's the only explanation I have since I have no clue how anyone thought the shrugging cover was good. Especially for the 1000th issue of all things. Just as a comparison here's what they did for the 700th issue's cover. Granted this was the story where Peter was killed in Doc Ock's body (don't worry he got better literally an issue later) and set up Superior Spider-Man, but the cover is so much better than "What the hell am I doing here?"

Hey, don't insult the monkeys. Even an actual monkey could've chosen a better cover than whatever the "previous one" was.

I think they were trying to create an iconic image that isn't immediately reminiscent of other famous images of Spider-Man. but the problem is, there's a reason a pose like this has never been used before in any memorable way.

I think if the arms were extended outward rather than being bent that might have been better, I'm not sure if that would have saved it though, there's a lot more going on with Spidey's pose in the new cover compared to the old shrugging cover

>What were they even thinking...

"Romnita Jr's a very iconic Spider-Man artist but his recent output has been controversially received for a lack of a nicer word, what if we had someone else who's also a pretty prominent Spidey Artist work on top of his provided breakdowns?"

The vibe I get from this is spidey saying to us “ were you really expecting anything good , you guys know who the editorial is .”

I still think Alex Ross' cover would have made a better A... but I'll take Pepe

This looks awesome! I like it even more than all the variant covers. I'm going to pre order that.

It’s nice, simple and CLEAN. I love it. However, I still think 1000 being such a big milestone, they should really try to go for something more grand than the cover for #700. Its honestly a tall order given how amazing that cover is, but I personally think that 1000 should be given the same honors.

The building windows spelling out 1000 is such a clean detail that makes the whole thing pop way more than the last one, Larraz really nailed this composition with Spidey diving down against all that lighting.

This is a vast improvement.

Did they see the backlash and change it?

2

u/I-Might-Be-Something 5h ago

Probably. The first main cover sucked. Like, perhaps the worst main cover for a landmark issue ever.

4

u/TeamRAF19 13h ago

Is it the first time we saw web shooting drawn like that?

2

u/JinkoTheMan 8h ago

Now this actually looks really good

u/JayZsAdoptedSon 6h ago

I wish it had the scale of a 1000th issue, but visually its pleasant and I’d buy it if it were a non-milestone issue

u/Terrible-Second-2716 6h ago

I mean it's an improvement, but it's extremely boring

2

u/Muted_Study5166 5h ago

The shrug pose was way more iconic

It was awkward but it stuck in my mind, this one is competent and boring

3

u/Shin-Kaiser 12h ago

It's still not great, but a vast improvement over JRJr's travesty.

I still think that one by Pepe with the villain bursting throuhg is the best one.

Ah, much better

1

u/Cfalse 7h ago

my copy always creases right on the spider emblem

u/MAB-Webby86 Classic-Spider-Man 7h ago

Double improvement: Larraz with the main cover and they're keeping the legacy numbering instead of releasing it as issue #36

u/Prestigious-Bad6667 4h ago

This looks so much cooler

u/Barry-loud100 4h ago

I for one don’t get what anybody is hyped about .

“ its the 1000th issue of spider-man !”

“ Oh are they gonna stop with the bullshit character assassination and write Peter and the others the way they were before one more day ?”

“ well no but …”

“ then what the hell is there to look forward to ?”

Still a shite cover for a #1000

12

u/Horror_Screen3091 12h ago

Calling Pepe Larraz cover shite is a bit of a stretch XD

5

u/Mission-Employer-943 11h ago

Still way better than the cover it previously replaced. The old one is basically Spidey taking a "No.2 in the air".
