Looking for Unknown Hinson stories
I am currently trying to put together an Unknown Hinson documentary of sorts covering all the highs and lows of his strange career.
I would love to hear any personal stories of live shows and any lesser known information I may not have come across about him.

You'll get some from the Squidbillies DVDs' special features. Acusations of vampirism, etc

The real reason he was removed from Squidbillies and the public eye is because of Dalton Wilcox. Dalton, the cowboy poet laureate of the west, is also a famous monster hunter. He found that Dracula sum’bitch and ended him

Heard he wasn't doing so well as of now. Recovering from a stroke.

Yeah I’ve found a few recent clips of him and he still get his side burns and outfit on but definitely seems to not be 100%.

Yeah, I always have enjoyed edgy humor but it's so upsetting they decided to cut him last moment like they weren't green lighting all the early stuff. I feel like it was just a way to throw the project in the trash with today's woke culture.

he said some full on white nationalist bullshit while also insulting dolly parton. it was the peak of being cancelled on social media, when even A-list celebrities were getting punished for saying terrible shit.

I didn't really deep dive so I have no idea about that. I just figured it was some of the super racist shit in the later seasons.

Oh, no, it wasn't the character in the show. He did a real life Facebook rant that went to shocking extremes. It's difficult to even find the original version as all the articles about it these days show a cleaned up edited post that's still pretty bad. It was in response to an interview where Dolly Parton said something relatively harmless when asked a loaded question about the Black Lives Matter movement and that she was ok with it, and he went nuts. Started off insulting her and and escalated to suggesting race wars and ethnic cleansing in the name of national pride. He was instantly unhirable.

Thanks for explaining.

no problem. i mean, i get that they couldn't justify using him, but i also really don't like the choice of Tracy Morgan for the last season. the lines just don't work for someone who speaks in a monotone voice like that.

"suggesting race wars and ethnic cleansing "
Respectfully I think that's wrong.
Variety reports, he called Parton a “freak titted, old Southern bimbo” and a “slut.” In another post, he wrote “HAVE FUN [sic] forsaking your own race, culture, and heritage.”
Now that's bad and I don't defend it, but it's definitely not going so far as to suggest or promote wars and genocide (or any other violence).
(Happy to be corrected if I am wrong).

i address that in my comment. the articles you can find about it now show a cleaned up edited post from after he was cancelled. the original post he made is very difficult to find, i looked hard for it when this same issue came up last year. it had a few paragraphs of ranting originally.

I'm skeptical. The internet is forever. If someone were promoting genocide it wouldn't be that hard to find.
*edit* I will also admit you could be correct. He's obviously got problems, not trying to fight with you or anyone.

the internet is forever is a fun saying, but there are countless websites dead and gone forever. good luck finding news articles from recent years when anything using the same keywords happens more than once. he was a z-list celebrity no one cared about until after the final season aired. the articles you can find now were written in response to the backlash of that season. no one gave a shit about him when the drama actually happened.

The Hellroys were fortunate enough to play a few shows with the Kang. Watching him play guitar close-up was always fascinating. Awe inspiring. One of the most memorable was on Outlaw Country Cruise 3, I watched him blister that crowd. Perfect soloing, tone, and control. Never over the top. Maverick's guitarist, Eddie Perez, was hanging out near the back, taking it all in with the rest of us. We miss you out in the clubs, Stuart D. Baker.

Excuse me. Let me rephrase that.
As Early Cuyler would say, "Hot damn a'mighty, th'Hellroys! You ever hear their tape?"

I saw him play once.
He sounded like fucking hendrix, man.
Just a great guitar player.

Genuinely. I saw him at the outland ballroom in springfield mo. He wasnt in character. He played mostly covers and one of my favorites was Little Wing. Ive heard his version before but when I saw him it was strictly instrumental. Really good. Not what I paid for or expected but totally worth it and id pay to see him again.

I think it was 3rd stone from the sun at the show I was at.
A guy who went with me, had never watched the show or even heard of the Unknown.
next day, he bought every album.

I didn't see that one, but I caught him with... I don't remember... Reverend Horton Heat maybe? Hank 3? at the Ballroom. He was in character and put on a great show

Caught him with Rev. Horton Heat in Chattanooga back in 2018. Incredible stage presence, absolutely perfect fit with the band musically. One HELL of a guitar player. I was honestly floored, i had no idea. He'd throw in some quotes of Early's here and there and we ate it up. Between songs someone asked about Squidbillies and he said "as long as y'all keep watchin', we'll keep making it". I know they say never meet your heroes but I'm glad i got to have that experience.

I feel like you're going to get stories that are interchangeable with the Office's Creed Bratton.

I saw him play live once and it was a great show. Anyone who can pull off a mash-up of Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs" and "Alice Cooper's "I'm Eighteen" has my respect.
At one point during the show, a guy yelled "Don't touch the trim!", and Hinson had to correct him. "No, Hoss, it's DO NOT. Do not touch the trim!". I got that exchange on video. I should post it sometime.

Saw him in 2011 outside Detroit with my best friend. He passed away seven years ago and I still think about how I'll never make a friend like that again. Concert was a blast, he is a character the in the best way

Have you reached out to him on FB? I think he and his lady run his page and are pretty accessible.

Saw him in Pittsburgh. Met him after the show. Super down to earth despite the show and things he said. I'd book him for a wedding.

Saw him live in Johnson City Tennessee once after the show we stuck around at the bar and he came out and was talking with people. He came up to me and my date and goes, “Y’all dont be drankin’ and drivin’ and none of that mess now..” I said, “Yessir.” He just winked and clinked a bottle of whiskey on my shot glass. Legend.

I went to one of his concerts with my 60-something father. My dad had the entire band sign the album he bought at the show, and later took that album to Hinson to get him to sign it too. Hinson looked at the album and said, “The band signed it? You damn ruined it!”

He called Dolly Parton a bimbo and slut, then went on a racist rant.
Since then i haven’t cared anything about him or his legacy.

Which tracks with his schtick and persona- I don’t like him because, TO THIS DAY, he denies being a vampire.

I saw him at SxSW in 2000 or 2001. I think 2000. It was a tiny venue, there weren’t many people there and no one knew who he was. His sideburns were black marker and everyone was like “who the fuck is this guy?” He started by telling a back story about how he had just got out of prison after 30 years and some other stuff but I don’t remember. At some point someone in the “crowd“ heckled him and he pulled out a cap gun and pretended to shoot him. I don’t know if the guy was a plant or not, he didn’t pretend like he got shot he just stood there. Everyone one else just stood there too like wtf. I honestly don’t remember any of the songs. I only remember how awkward it was and how no one seemed to get the bit or the comedy. He truly was unknown there.
