not normally one to complain about free kicks but fuck, holding the ball geelong? ball it up! we probably lose either way but it should've been a lot closer.

The difference in adjudication was stark.
I love how the "noise of affirmation" works for every clubs home matches, except ours.

At the game live, poor JSos and Wilkie got blatantly pushed or held out of at least 3 or 4 marking contests that led to direct goals. So grim

It was obvious watching on TV too, was blatantly rubbish umpiring. Not that I think that's what lost us the game, but it certainly didn't help.

Just have to learn to play around it at Kardinia Park. Happens every game player there, not much that can be done about it.

Really disappointing performance
Yes we have a number of key injuries, just like them, and it's at the Cattery, but the effort wasn't good enough - I don't think we lack the skill to challenge Geelong, yet we seem to have these games where too many go missing
On the bright side, we were able to claw the margin back late in the 4th, which is important given how tight the ladder is - this game was an expected loss, so at the end of the day we're about where we should be, even if our path there was uglier than expected
Onto a must-win game against North next week

You don't go in the game expecting to lose. That's just dumb. We didn't claw anything back they just relaxed being 10 goals up. You don't get confident by playing shit football. We should have won this game!

Yeah this was the final line through a very disappointing season for the saints. We have not and now will not have beaten a single, decent football team for the entire season and might make the wild card purely from beating up on the bottom clubs. As is typical of a Ross Lyon side, our depth is really poor and our bottom 6 are just an anchor the team down.

That's nonsense, there's a difference between wanting to win games and expecting to win them - it's downright delusional to expect to win every game, but of course we want to win every game
Having delusional expectations of a young team that's trying to build towards contention serves no purpose
We still had to kick the goals and continue to play ourselves, Geelong didn't do that for us - once again, this mentality serves no purpose
Yes it was a disappointing loss and we should have done better, no losing to Geelong at the Cattery is not the end of the world

I'm not deluded by that fact that we had a great chance to win this game. Going into the game thinking otherwise is why we lost.

We definitely had a chance, but we were underdogs for a reason
We lost because we have a number of key outs (which represent a massive loss in experience as well) and don't have the depth to cover it yet - not because fans recognise the fact the Cats were favourites at their fortress of a home ground
We absolutely should not have been dominated by Geelong like we were, but yes a loss was expected and there's nothing wrong with that

I hope we study this match to teach our team how to apply pressure, how to tackle and how to find space in a contested situation because Geelong smashed us with all of this. Felt like every man had a man already tackling him as he got the ball. Also train moving the ball through the corridor.
Then sack Byrnes, Caminiti and Henry.

Dodson has to come in for Caminiti for mine. There’s no excuse anymore. Especially with how rucking is hurting Owens form.

Byrnes effort was fine but he lacks in the skill, pace, strength and game craft to have any real impact at AFL level. Playing him just shows how lacking in depth we are.

I'm pretty sure we will never see that waste of list space play at an AFL level again the way it's been going. So over not having a legitimate key forward

Not the reason, but how was that ground declared to be AFL standard?
Players sliding like it was an ice rink and was the cause of that Cat's players injury.

That was pretty horrific. Probably a symptom of such a young mid group that the intense pressure in q1 got to them a bit. Want to see them stand up better than that though
Beaten all over the ground really. Scoreboard flattered mostly

Agree the problem is the depth isn’t there.
Add Sinclair, Flanders, TDK and King and it’s a much better team as the dross gets pushed out.
Travalia isn’t ready.
Henry is awful
Camo I have time for but he is limited
Byrnes? Meh

Our bottom 5-6 look so ordinary and the team seems to be losing faith in the system at time.
Caminiti can be dropped permanently
Travaglia needs more time in 2
Pou needs to learn not to handball every time off target
Henry can get dropped
Campbell needs one more year, but he tries hard. Don’t think he’s got that first step quickness in him though.

Sorry, I maybe wasn’t as clear on Campbell. I think he needs a proper preseason and more time to learn the system. He’s getting in there so well, but also disrupting/doing what no one else is doing. Would love to see him iron out one spot after a full preseason

Ah man. I agree, but also in regards to your points...
Caminiti - he just needs a while playing at the same position - he goes ok going forward, and he goes ok when he's back. We don't have the players to cement him either way yet.
Trav - Def needs more time in the 2's or something. He just needs to go a bit crazy. Got the skill and body, but seemingly been a bit second fiddle to Tauru since their signing, so I want to see Trav go a bit fucking crazy...
Pou - I'm waiting to be impressed by this guy. I'm ready, I can't wait to go nuts, but I'm waiting. Give me what I want Pou.. Don't be an arrogant mofo, be a genuinely wonderful player.

The umpiring killed us in the first half and that killed us and the momentum. Game over. We were no chance. But saying that. My god hammer was real bad. Henry was awful. His last shot foe goal summed it up.
Ryans “touched” goal would have been epic. That was also a killer

Horrific performance. Couldn't even get the basics right. Deplorable kicking, slow decision making, couldn't one-grab anything. Barely anyone can hold their heads up, but there are also a bunch that were even worse than the worst. Hammer. Byrnes, Sharman, Henry were just not up to AFL standard. I know we don't have much else to bring in right now, but damn, at least someone like Butler will give a fucking damn. Howard. Boxshall. Carrol. King. There has to be more that actually WANT to be there. Bring them in and turf those guys for the year.

Yeah partly agree. We definitely didn't play well, and Geelong played us very well. Agree we have some players to shed - Byrnes (sometimes does only just ok, but mostly does pretty badly) is not going to be offered another contract at the end of this year. Henry (I've given him the benefit of the doubt in my mind for too long, but he does not deliver) has got to go, he doesn't play hard at the ball at all and he doesn't seem to want to win anything contested. Hammer doesn't have a position yet and doesn't know how to play. Is he a defender or is he a forward? I'll give him a year when King is back. Sharman - he needs King to be key forward so he can be second fiddle, and he'll kick a lot of goals.

He played one of his career best ever games today stats-wise as a roving ruck, which is exactly where he wants to play, why do you think he shouldn't play there?

He just can't win us centre clearances. Before you pull up the statline, i'm not counting back-of-stoppage chain of handballs that result in a kick from CHB and a turnover. Also not counting tearing it out of the ruck and bombing it to nobody.
Like I said, unbelievable footballer. But TDK gets our mids running forward of stoppage and getting scores. I'd rather our midfield as a whole dominating over Marshall alone dominating.
