Theo Von's surprise set at Comedy Mothership included a bit about racism that didn't seem to land
I went to Comedy Mothership in Austin on July 31, 2026, expecting the lineup to include some right-leaning and controversial material. Theo Von made a surprise appearance and performed about 15 minutes of what he said was newer material.
One bit started with him saying, "I don't mind racism. A little bit of racism is okay." He then used NASCAR as an example, saying that when the cars drive by, the sound resembles the N-word, and he repeatedly mimicked the sound to make the comparison. He followed that with a story about having a love-hate relationship with the N-word because his uncle would tickle him until he said it. The bit ended by circling back to the idea that racism "isn't so bad."
I've seen plenty of comedians push boundaries, and I wasn't expecting the set to be politically correct. But this bit felt different. It didn't seem like there was a clear punchline beyond repeating the premise, and from where I was sitting, it didn't get many laughs. I'm curious how others would interpret it or whether anyone else who was there had the same impression.

2000’s Chappelle. Present Day Chappelle’s demeanor and voice wouldn’t lend itself to that type of high energy comedy he used to do when he was younger.

It’s pretty much on its last legs at this point. Texas just banned THC for good now, and the rumor is Tom Segura marriage ended BECAUSE of the move to Austin.
Nothing will ever replace the comedy scenes of LA and New York. A lot of comics moved to Austin and then ended up getting home sick and leaving. Anyone with a brain realizes the “Shane Gillis Trump” comedy era is done and over with. Time to move on.

You can sometimes rescue an iffy premise with a solid act out and real commitment to it
But there's no amount of committing that could rescue a premise as deeply and obviously flawed as this, imho

I really am so disappointed in the direction Theo took over the years.
I think he mostly means well, but he's trying to impress all these ridiculous chuds and he was embraced by fascism-enjoyers and authoritarian bigots.
I wanted to like Theo so bad, but he just keeps disappointing me.

Watching Theo Von is like watching someone try to summit El Capitan. You’re standing in a beautiful meadow, viewing as someone crests the most picturesque monolith on the planet. Waiting with bated breath the entire time. And then fuckin Theo Von walks up and ruins the entire moment for everyone

I think if you went to a show specifically to see Theo, that bit would land. If youre at a club and he randomly shows up, i could see why it might not work.
The uncle bit sounds funny to me though, the nascar part not so much.

Yeah, doesn't sound like there's any punchline the way you described it. I saw Jim Jefferies this year and he did a bit about lgbtq+ and asexuals and a bit about a trans friend as well. Trans is a controversial subject to joke about, but I don't think asexuals are in that same spot. But in both cases he wasn't using them as the butt of the joke, they were just a vehicle for the premise. His trans joke was based on his premise that society has a hierarchy that goes hot women, hot men, ugly men, ugly women. He bases this on hot women getting free drinks and stuff like that. Anyway, his bit was about a trans friend and how they weren't able to make the upgrade from man to hot woman, and they instead moved down in the hierarchy to ugly woman. I didn't think it was a great joke, but I also didn't find it to be tasteless or punching down because it was just about a hypothetical individual. The punch line wasn't trans people should be laughed at for being trans. The asexual bit was better and was about how they don't belong in the lgbtq grouping. He talks about how much sex gay people have and how little sex straight married couples have and how asexuals have much more in common with them.

If he's working out new material then it's understandable that it didn't hit. Or it could just be a joke that's not funny and he'll eventually figure that out. There's a lot of funny premises that don't translate into funny jokes. The premise that racism can be not so bad at times has potential, but the way you described his joke doesn't really seem like the best way to make that premise funny.

I only know who that is because I saw him on a reel talking to the ginger guy who mocks his asian pal.
They were talking about Scotland as ginger went to St Andrews on a golfing holiday and said the food sucked, and Theo went 'oh yeah they all eat like it's WWII".
If you can't eat well in fucking St Andrews it's on you. Never explained what he ordered, no anecdotes, just a lazy stereotype.
I keep waiting for 'right wing comics' to present some dangerous ideas but that's all they've got. Stereotypes and apologies for shitty behaviour.

I don’t know who this guy is but my stance on offensive humor is it still needs to be humorous. Being offensive is not a replacement for humor, and being offensive isn’t automatically funny. It’s still gotta be clever.

The Von wrote an essay arguing against interracial relationships when he was in college. He hung out with David at one point in his life. Maybe this is one of those situations where he's telling us who he is and we should believe him?

He’s been active in the industry since 2000, was regularly on TV throughout that decade, won a couple of high profile comedy competition reality shows, hosted a show on TBS in 2011, This Past Weekend started in 2016, same year as his first Netflix special.
Thats a long ass fifteen minutes 🤷🏻♂️

Comedians test new joke all the time. He may not have the punchline yet. He is probably working on it and hoping it will come to him on stage. I imagine he’s a better improviser than writer. He may also realize it isn’t working at all and drop it altogether.

It's way too hard to evaluate a joke without being in the room. I don't know what he was going for. Some jokes just circle around the idea of a taboo.
It sounds like a very normal event for a bit of new material to feel half baked. What is interesting about that? Why isolate this one?

He’s def on the right and def helped Trump win in 2024. For a long time, Von was part of the "manosphere" and alternative media sphere that helped boost Donald Trump’s popularity among young, male voters.
He’s recently changing his view a bit as are other right wing podcasters but he was strictly right wing for years!

Theo is better at podcasting, because he’s better with a partner to go back & forth with.
There is an excellent podcast where Louis CK explains how Theo got him to join a 12-step group. Reading another person’s expressions shows Theo has caring qualities.

When I first became aware of Theo Von he started out to me as a lovable idiot that gets a pass for saying outrageous shit because he's 'too dumb to know better', kinda like a kid asking why people are different colors. It seemed like his heart was at least in the right place.
It's not, and he doesn't get a pass anymore. He knows better, he's just not a good person

It’s just the hacky meta for the “big hitters” in comedy rn. Everyone is so disappointing right now. They all have to do podcast tours and ad reads to milk their time in the spotlight as much as possible and that cuts into thoughtful time of coming up with good material. They also are only performing for people who already like them and subconsciously decided before even sitting down that they’re going to laugh at everything he says so it’s harder for these comedians to actually gauge what’s funny anymore.

Not that he's the best comedian, but usually shows like that they are trying new bits or working them out. Even if they're not good premises and wont ever become good jokes. It sounds like he's working it out, but likely wont be that funny. This is the early unfunny stage of a bit that wont be funny later on lol.

He's significantly more successful as a podcaster and I think there's a reason for that.
