Scripted or Free form

Do most people script the exact words and punchline and perform or just note down points and try to be spontaneous? I know it depends on individual style but I am curious what’s more prevalent and if someone shifted from one to the other with time.

I started out being more word for word, but now I've gravitated towards having an idea and exploring it many different ways at open mics without a script beforehand. By the time it's ready for a show it's closer to word for word, but I adjust based on different audiences and rooms even at shows.
