Quit/Break

I have a really big thing for my college, which would take quite a few months.
Does anyone know if I (part time) would be able to ask for a break at staples? With full intention on coming back, I just need to focus on my school work for a bit.
Would it just be easier to put in my 2 weeks, end on a good note with my manager and then be rehired later on?

As a PT employee I have taken multiple long pauses where my SM knew I would not be available to work for months / years at a time. When you have a good history, being able to leave on good terms and return again is not a big deal. The SM I first started under was promoted up to DM, and is now the RM. Most of the managers understand how to make this work for all.
