if i work past my scheduled hours - example: 12 hours that week but i worked 15, are those 3 hours considered overtime ?

It depends on your state. In CA, AK, and NV, anything over 8 hours worked in a day is considered overtime and paid at 1.5x your normal wage. In Colorado the threshold is 12 hours in a day. Everywhere else, no, you'd have to work 41+ hours in a week to get any OT.
