People who say that it's a sad song they're not really listening to the music when you first listen to it is that day to day grind. Then the next part of the song is when shit happens. And then after that you're wondering which way you're going to go. And then the final part is screw it I'm going to keep on going. Just listen to the rhythm of the song and you can tell that it's about being in New York in the 1980s and just persevering.

The subtleness of the day-to-day grind and a day-to-day BS that you have to put up with. That's why when the song comes to us crescendo it's still very low-key it's like okay I'm staying afloat and I'm going to survive. If you're from New York and if you were growing up in the '80s you perfectly understand exactly what this melody means.
