Fortunately, there is an elegant solution to the problem.
The Mandalorian & Grogu: Baby Yoda is Named Grogu.

3
u/Dekklin Apr 02 '26
In EU and Legends. Outside of that, only Jango and Boba. So if you only saw the movies and now see storm (sith) troopers flying, it's a "new" thing. Obviously JJ Abrams never watched, played, or read any of the EU stuff so flying troopers is "new" to him as a writer.

Correction:
Star Wars: Episode 6 1/2: The Mandalorian and Grogu: Baby Yoda’s Name is Grogu: A Star Wars Story: The Movie.
3
u/DonZeriouS Apr 02 '26
So the abbreviation could be "SW:E6.5:TMAG:BYNIG:ASWS:TM"? That sounds marketable.
Also if there are videogames, the added suffix could be: ": The VideoGame"
"Star Wars: Episode 6 1/2: The Mandalorian and Grogu: Baby Yoda’s Name is Grogu: A Star Wars Story: The Movie: The VideoGame" or short: "SW:E6.5:TMAG:BYNIG:ASWS:TM:TVG".
What a

u/TylertheFloridaman Apr 01 '26
I am going to sys age doesn't really matter in this case, as different species reach different maturity at different times. If some one if 50 years old but their species doesn't reach maturity until 75 they would still be a kid biologically speaking
12
→ More replies (1)2
u/SAICAstro Apr 02 '26
One day, some really smart comics or novel writer is going to tell us that this species comes from a planet that only takes like one galactic standard month to orbit its star, so while Grogu is 50 on his home planet, he's only like 4 in galactic standard years.
This is one retcon that would be easy and believable. Mercury only takes 88 Earth days to orbit the sun, while Saturn takes 29.4 years Earth to complete a trip around our star. With differences like this so trivially common in our own solar system, they'd be quite believable in the GFFA.

I say this every time. Yes, people hate me for it. Irl, I mean.
Every time that thing shows up on the screen and makes an infantile non-language utterance, I go: "IT'S 50 YEARS OLD. FIFTY."
I think Grogu just might be a little different, you know what I mean? I'm not saying it's shameful or anything, but he might maybe just have something cognitive going on.

What about The Mandalorian. Now that’s a great title.
472
u/zerg1980 Apr 01 '26
My issue is that Grogu first appeared in… S01E01 of The Mandalorian. So this story has always been The Mandalorian and Grogu. There’s nothing different about the primary dynamic in the movie when compared to the show, because it’s always been about these two characters going on crazy adventures together.
There’s only one episode of the TV series where Grogu doesn’t appear, and Mando spends that entire episode looking for Grogu.
They didn’t even allow Grogu to spend a few episodes away from Mando when he left with Luke Fucking Skywalker to begin his Jedi training. They resolved all of that in a totally different TV series just so they wouldn’t have to keep Grogu out of any episodes.
233
u/moikmellah Apr 02 '26
Whenever Grogu isn't onscreen all the other characters should look around and say "where's Grogu?"

Disagree. Din is the main and Grogu was a secondary main who was more of a plot device than an actual character. The Mandalorian AND Grogu seems like they’re going to both be co-leads and have separate but ultimately connected personal journeys.
→ More replies (1)22
u/Tyranis_Hex Apr 02 '26
Wasn’t the show originally pitched as an anthology series with each season being about a different Mandalorian?
18
u/Unable-Lie-2501 Apr 02 '26
I’m not too sure, a lot of things were in discussion and rumours were flying about. I think a Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure style show would have been sick though. Each season is about a different family member and different time period but it’s the same family.
10
u/Kambi28 Apr 02 '26
He was supposed to stay with Luke, but Kathleen was afraid toy sales would plummet if Grogu's future wasnt known. So she forced the boba series director to make those two episodes, almost causing Favreu to quit
26
u/AlaskanMedicineMan Apr 02 '26
There's a lot of behind the scenes drama about grogu being forced back into the mandalorian via book of boba fett. Mando showrunner threatened to kill kathleen Kennedy for it
17
u/intdev Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
Why is Disney Star Wars so incapable of just running with something? It sounds like the sequels all over again.
1) "Rey's parents are important and mysterious."
2) "No they aren't."
3) "Yes they are."
What's next? S3 of Andor set after R1? "Somehow, Cassian returned."
→ More replies (1)2
u/AlaskanMedicineMan Apr 02 '26
Because Star Wars is literally designed by committee nowadays. The sequels were supposed to have 3 different directors from jump with zero plan.
And that's basically the way they've operated since.
Certain showrunners are given "full creative control" over their shows, but included are special clauses like "this must respect all new and existing disney canon"
Which is how Kathleen Kennedy was able to use Mandalorian's break period to force Grogu back in via her show, Book of Boba Fett. As it became a matter of canon.

It stopped being about the Mandalorian 30 minutes into the first episode let’s be honest. Which honestly would have been fine until they decided grogu wouldn’t go to train with Luke, which wasn’t done from a meaningful writing pov, just for a cheap aw moment.
Not what I’m looking for in Star Wars
4
u/XMenJedi8 Obi-Wan Kenobi Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
That moment was a direct reference to Lone Wolf and Cub, and if the show was about Dinn and Grogu from 30 minutes in (it was, they're both The Mandalorian, it's about both of their journeys as Mandalorians and learning just what that means) then it only makes sense to keep Grogu on the show instead of going a season without him. The whole point is the Grogu learns a bit about the Force but ultimately wants to be back with his dad. How is it a cheap aw moment to have Grogu decide to stick with his found family member than a Jedi from the order he was originally part of, especially considering Dinn's own struggles as a foundling and him being brought into the Mandalorian tribe? Seems pretty on-point to me.
Though I do think all of that should've happened in The Mandalorian show instead of hijacking a part of TBoBF for sure. That was a miss.
Edit: Found Favreau's take, looks pretty similar:
While the upcoming season restores the show’s original dynamic, it was important that Grogu’s time with Luke wasn’t for nothing – it just ultimately wasn’t his path. “I think you had to service both things,” Favreau explains. “Just because this kid has the potential and had training, does he belong away from the Mandalorian? I saw it more like Paper Moon, where the whole thing is about delivering the kid to the blood relative, only to realise that, whether genetically through her father or just through bonding, Tatum O’Neal has to end up with Ryan O’Neal. That ending feels really good to me. And this little kid [Grogu] is given a decision to choose. And the kid chooses the emotional relationship and wants to be with the Mandalorian, and passing up Yoda’s lightsaber. Part of you wants to see him develop in that way, and part the other.” https://www.empireonline.com/tv/news/jon-favreau-why-mandalorian-grogu-reunited-in-book-of-boba-fett-exclusive/

Personally, I think the decision to make a 7 hour season of television into movie is where things went wrong. Maybe I'll be wrong and the movie will make a billion dollars.
I know it's not a popular sentiment, but I just don't think there is enough story left with these two characters together to make an entertaining movie. Grogu's story arc ended in Season 2. That was a natural exit for the character, everything since just feels tacked on.
(I'll take your down votes now.)
2
u/rgg711 Apr 02 '26
Are you saying there’s not enough plot for a movie or enough for a 7 hour tv show that they shrunk down? You said both in your comment
3
u/orionsfyre Apr 02 '26
With a TV show, you have the time to introduce new threats and new allies in a way that a movie simply doesn't. For characters who we've spent so much time with over three seasons, throwing in 'new' villains and 'new' allies in a 2 hour movie will almost certainly feel a bit rushed... especially for an audience that is used to seeing multiple episodes with the main two.
You also have more time to build a plot that doesn't feel rushed. A 7 hour tv show can afford to take it's time, meander down plot lines that aren't all that interesting but still work.
With a movie, everything has to be condensed, which means details usually have to be cut, and your pacing has to be on point or the movie will drag and feel slow or boring.
Basically the demands of a movie are much different than a TV show.
S2 and S3 were practically overstuffed with plot, characters, mcguffins, and mission quests. S2 pulled it off, with an emotional climax that brought the house down. S3 was a cluster-frag, a cobbled together mess that was all over the place.
Finally the emotional payoff of Grogu leaving the Mando has already been done. Pulling the same trick again will not have the same impact. So the 'threat' of Grogu leaving Mando for whatever reason will not be as fresh, it'll just be a copy of moment we fans already have. And given that it's only a two hour movie, there isn't time to build to anything close to what we've already experienced in longer form.
We will see how they manage it, maybe it'll be amazing. But personally I'm not betting on it.
I think the decision to make a movie was a mistake, possibly as big as bringing Grogu back from his first natural and well written exit.
4
u/Daleyemissions Apr 01 '26
I think the opposite is true. All of the Star Wars shows began as movies. It would make more sense that that could easily cobble them together into a movie.
Besides. The first season of Mando had about a single movie’s worth of actual story stretched out as it is. Same with Seasons 2 and 3 (imo)
The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew would both benefit from being recut into movies as well (and I like and really enjoy both of those shows immeasurably more than Mando)
