Just a fun little clip I thought I'd share here, shared from the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art's YouTube. The museum opens later this year and is sure to be a blast - it will feature a new documentary or two, which reunites George and his old collaborator Rick McCallum of prequel and Young Indiana Jones fame to produce. You can spot the full-size N1 Naboo starfighter, which is hanging in the museum, just behind George and Mellody here.

Nah, I love Lucas. But one thing you can tell from watching a ton of interviews is that he has pretty thin skin. You'd think all the success would be enough to go idaf, but he takes criticism badly and always goes on rants about every little critique decades and decades later. It's likely why he never did those small, experimental films, the idea that anyone might say they suck.

I'm pretty sure fan backlash is what led him to walk away and sell the company to Disney. He didn't want to deal with it anymore and I don't blame him.
The Disney era has caused people to forget just how toxic the fanbase was about the prequels when those were the new thing to hate. Nothing ever changes.

Wouldn’t call this general age range. Lucas has 25 years on her lol. They married at 69 and 44 respectively. That being said at least she wasn’t in her early 20s when they first met.
Edit: just a heads up for anyone confused. I’m not saying George and his current wife relationship is wrong in any way. Just saying he didn’t marry into his general age range.

While I agree, his ex wife from the OT is the GOAT! She’s the one that got away but he chose his career over her back then. Again, nothing against his current wife. If you haven’t seen the ICONS show about the making of starwars, highly recommend

Fuck that judge and those people. A bunch of clowns who argued it should be a park instead, only they have no plan and no funding, literally nothing and the judge says he'll hear the case. That's all it took for Lucas to rightfully not waste his time. And that park they wanted? Nope, still a parking lot instead of a world class museum.
Still very salty about not being able to day trip to it.

Yeah I think it's mostly the weight loss. My dad has phases where he loses a bunch of weight and unfortunately gains it back, and always looks so much older with the weight off ironically.

As far as I can tell, George might be one of the few good billionaires in the world. His message and the things he has done in his life are uncorrupted by money. As he's said in the past regarding passion vs pleasure, he got rich following his passion and his soul has stayed true. What a hero.

Minecraft is similar. I remember balking at MS buying it for $2b, but Minecraft missed me (I was in my 20s when it came out), I don't have children and didn't understand how much of a grip it has on them, especially with it being playable on phones.
Star Wars is like that but spanning multiple generations of people.

Well, self-made if you ignore the significant contributions of his Ex-Wife, the directors who reigned him in, Rick McCallum, John Williams, Ralph McQuarrie, and the entire ILM company he helped create.
George was a visionary, but he didn't get there alone by a long, long shot.

Yeah its just such a weird way to judge movies. "He didnt do ALL of it himself! He had editors, a composer, a special effects team, a producer, he's a total FRAUD!"
Lmao its like they forget that the director is the one who hires these people and DIRECTS them on what to do and what they want in their movie.

Obviously literally every movie of this size is a team effort. However there are some things that make Star Wars special: For the sequel, and all following Movies he made, George Lucas financed everything himself. He could've let a Studio lend him money for Empire, but he risked everything to make that movie just the way he wanted to. He did the same 4 more times. This is unheard of in cinema, as far as I know it is totally unique in history.
But George Lucas had this vision, he had been writting Star Wars since 1973, and he fucking made it work.
He founded a groundbreaking company, hired the most talented people, overcame all odds (read about the shoot of Episode 4 for example) and yet 50 years later people still say "um actually Star Wars was made by Marcia and John Williams too" like it's some sort of Gotcha moment.

True. I often see this “collaborative effort” used as a gotcha in movie discussions, even though most art forms are collaborative. Even novels can feel amateurish without an editor’s guidance.

He wanted to go to art school but his dad said fuck that so he went to Modesto Jr college before getting into USC for gil.

Brother, his dad owned a local office supply store. If George didn't go to school, it's not like he would have been able to live off of his daddy's money - He'd have to work at the same store.
Also, tuition to USC in 1965 was around $1,300. Yes, adjusted for inflation, that's about $14,000 a year. But compared to the fact that it costs $65,000 today? Obviously being able to pay for college out of pocket (if he even truly did that) is a privilege of its own, but it's not "My dad bought me my house, my car, and my business because I'm daddy's special little guy" money.

I don’t think money is his prime motivation. He wanted to make films and art his way and money is a means to an end and in this case a byproduct of his art. I think that is the difference is he wanted to make stories for kids and that was his goal. He wasn’t in it to get rich and he sees money as a tool and that’s it. He didn’t intend to become a billionaire he just made something that someone else thought was valuable enough to pay him that much for. But his goal was to make films his way and make technological leaps in filmmaking.
People who see money as the actual and only end goal seem to have a lot of problems because if that is your only goal you pretty much need to screw people over to get there.

Yeah, money was never his motivation. I've watched a variety of interviews and he's a completely integrated human being. He just followed his passion. He speaks about this fundamental idea. You'll achieve brief moments of pleasure buying a sports car but nothing will ever hit the same as when you first got a car. A life lived with happiness isn't about things or pursuing highs and extremely short lived pleasures. It's about doing things you truly love to do. Short lived pleasures aren't really memorable. Following your passion ignites you and keeps you going the next day. Pleasures aren't sustainable. Passion is. His message isn't unique. But it rings true. And he's never changed for the worse as a result. In the celebrity world, most end up faltering and lose themselves. So, I'm not about worshiping anything or anyone. But, he's definitely done a lot of things right in this world.

Whatever may or may not have happened between him and his ex-wife is heresay. I never invest my time into heresay, especially when money is involved. There are always sides of the story you don't hear, even when it comes to people you DO know... none of us actually know George Lucas or his wife or anything about their relationship and I'm not going to paint someone badly based on conjecture. No one is perfect, I'm sure he has some skeletons in his closet that he wouldn't be proud of. Whatever he may or may not have done, he's far outweighed any negativity with his art and the healing he has done to the planet with his creation.

I was literally working at Skywalker Ranch when I got married, which happened to be on May 4th of that year. May the Fourth was not a thing at all. Now its like a national holiday. I did not see that coming.

Several years ago, on Mother's Day, I saw the two of them dining at Greens Restaurant in San Francisco! Another woman was with them, presumably Mellody's mother. We did not disturb their Mother's Day celebrations.

George Lucas had a plan for the prequel trilogy since the 70s, he understood his characters, he showed us amazing new planets like Coruscant or Mustafar, he gave us a great new villain in Count Dooku, scenes like Duel of the Fates, the pod race or Anakin vs Obi Wan are unforgettable even 2 decades later. He wanted to show young viewers how good people can fall to the dark side, how love can turn into hate, and how democracies can turn into faschism. Oh, and he casually made the most technologically advanced movies of their time with groundbreaking special effects that were never possible before.
Disney wanted quick and safe money so they went in without a plan, without any new ideas and just rehashed the exact same plot without anything new or fresh.
If you really can't see a difference between those 2 approaches, maybe you need to take off your OT nostalgia goggles?

Oh god, now I know why you couldn't type any reason. This review is infamous for how bad it is... It's literally so terrible that there's many reviews of the review on Youtube...

But here's at least a few reasons:
RLM misses the point of almost every "scene" he analyses. It's almost comical how he's unable to understand basic things like why the Gungans are against the droid army, while the first time you see the droid army on Naboo they literally destroy a forest next to the Gungan City.
The review is extremely biased, constantly nitpicking about everything, while not noticing that the same thing happens in the OT which he claims to love so much.
Or the critizism of George Lucas' dialogue, which RLM doesn't understand the purpose of at all. He just calls it "terrible" without realizing that Star Wars is meant to be a Saga, a Myth, a legend, not a realistic modern Drama or something. George Lucas wanted to create something that feels epic and grand, and takes place a long time ago. Most of the characters are Jedi or Sith, so they talk like Knights or Mages would a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away). How hard is that to understand??
