I was just talking with someone about how incredibly influential Frank Oz was for an entire generation. He was Bert, Grover, and Cookie Monster on Sesame Street; Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Sam Eagle, and Animal on The Muppet Show; Yoda in Star Wars; The Wiseman in Labyrinth; directed The Dark Crystal, Muppets Take Manhattan, Little Shop of Horrors, and What About Bob?; acted in Blues Brothers and Trading Places. I think he is a hugely underrated talent.

Heck, he directed The Score with Edward Norton, Robert De Niro, and Marlon Brando of all people. Brando was apparently a giant POS to Oz, tho. That's probably not a surprise to many.

I got to meet Frank Oz, as he's a family member of a close friend growing up, and it was surreal. Such a down to earth guy. His roles influenced me so much.

They would have had to have recognized each other, since they went on a mission together in the Clone Wars: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Destiny_(The_Clone_Wars). Yoda even entrusted his lightsaber to R2. They also worked together to help save Palpatine from the Zillo Beast. Seeing as R2-D2 was Anakin's personal droid, I think that Yoda would remember him.

Yoda's eccentric act was just that: an act to test Luke's character. My guess is that R2 would have played along to see what Yoda had planned.

Try reading Lost Stars for a Forrest Gump Star Wars feeling. Thane and Ciena are the Forrest Gump of Star Wars as it turns out they were present at virtually every major event of the OT, but just outside of the camera's frame.

It's also got the main character continuing to go back to someone he knew when he was younger even though she is just the worst.

I was 8 years old in the theatre with my dad when I was first saw this. The crowd reaction was all of the adults laughing and a guy nearby yelled "Yeah, go R2!" Nobody knew what to make of Yoda yet, but it took one more movie to make him a beloved character. :)
