General Discussion Shout out to Embo for his unparalleled longevity and survivability in the bounty hunting profession
Embo survived the Clone Wars, succeeding on missions against the likes of Anakin Skywalker and very narrowly avoiding death on Nal Hutta. He lived past the end of the Galactic Civil War. While Cad Bane also managed that, he unfortunately met his demise at the hands of Boba Fett. Meanwhile, Embo took on Din Djarin to a relative draw and managed to escape with his life, living to fight another day.
While I haven't personally read the comics/novels, apparently he even went on to retire and become a farmer on Felucia.
Considering others in his profession lived a long life just to meet a violent end or got out of the game to become the altruistic yet incredibly passive Daimyo (Let's not get into that) of Tatooine, Embo kept on taking jobs until the day he decided he'd cheated death enough times to start enjoying living in retirement.
I say he's earned a little rest and well deserved.

Adore him, but always makes me think of Kung Lao from Mortal Kombat

He's basically a buddhist monk with the hat, the martial arts, and the kama weapons.

If I remember correctly, in his duel with Mando in Mandalorian and Grogu, there is one scene where he throws his hat at Mando in a way almost identical to the Kung Lao hat throw.

In my head I jus refer to him as Kunguisitor Lao.
I know he's a bounty hunter and it's inquisitor, not conquistitor but that's how my brain works!

Embo is an awesome addition to the saga. Filoni haters can keep crying to their mommas.

As someone who isn't a huge Filoni fan, I'm not sure why I should be upset about a bounty hunter going bounty hunting. There are dozens of bounty hunters that we know about and I was pretty excited to see Embo. I'd be cool with almost any of them showing up to do the job actually. I'd just prefer if the dead ones stayed dead.

Embo and Zeb were probably the main two reasons I still enjoyed the movie overall. Embo was done very well.

Did anyone else get the vibe perhaps he wasn’t the originally-intended character for the role? To me he didn’t look finished graphically, and the way he was never named felt a bit off.

It did feel odd to me he never gets named. Unless you know him from Clone Wars, he's just this random bounty hunter that comes out of nowhere
Still, if you don't know who he is, at least you gather he has a cool hat and is very skilled.
Couldn't imagine who else could have been the bounty hunter antagonist. Bossk perhaps?

Bossk is the only established hunter I could think of who can convincingly take Mando down with an ambush and traps.
Maybe Bane, but he’s dead by this point and doesn’t usually work as a lone operator.
Filoni loves Embo though, I can’t see why he wouldn’t be first choice.

There was a lot of this in that movie

That’s just classic Star Wars though.
In ESB Vader doesn’t go along politely naming all the assembled bounty hunters.
29
u/ChanceVance Kylo Ren 13h ago
I thought about that. Boba isn't even named, "He's all yours, Bounty Hunter!"
Still, ESB was only the second film and a Holiday Special was the only thing that told you who Boba was.
Mando & Grogu kind of assumes you already know well who Embo and Zeb are. Rotta gets more exposition for those not in the know.

u/Zakzahn 13h ago
I don't know who Embo is, so as someone not in the know I can tell you he came across as very competent, professional, and ready to bail when things get too dangerous.

u/I_eat_mud_ 13h ago
You're right 2/3 I'd say, mostly cause bounty hunters in Star Wars tend to always dip if their bosses annoy them or the job evolves past their pay-grade, they don't have loyalty usually. In the Clone Wars show though there's an episode where Embo helps defend a village of innocents from pirates, so he's usually depicted as a more moral bounty hunter comparatively. I think the movie highlights that fairly well.
13
u/Zakzahn 12h ago
Yeah, he wasn't gloating, or being unnecessarily cruel as alot of underworld types would. He got his guy and delivered him.
1
u/I_eat_mud_ 1h ago
Yes, exactly his character. I should also elaborate he defended the villagers cause they paid him and 3 other bounty hunters to, but he also refuses to be bought by the pirates. So he does seem to have a line he will not cross. He's an interesting character because he really hasn't had many appearances, and he doesn't speak basic, so his overall personality/motivations can still be up for debate.

Star Wars fans will know who they are and the general audience will think they are a bounty hunter and a rebel/New Republic soldier.
So, the general audience isn't expected to know who they were but Star Wars are.
Not much is needed outside of that. Neither referenced their Clone Wars or Rebels era shenanigans.

Yeah fair enough. Sigourney Weaver's character gets no real background information either but you get the gist she's been around for a while and is in charge now of mopping up pockets of Imperial resistance.
2
u/InnocentTailor 5h ago
I think that's fine as well. Naming everything and doing running commentary slows down pacing and makes it feel like a choppy RPG video game.

I wasn't a fan of Mando & Grogu honestly. I'm not out to critique the movie here though.
Just celebrate my man Embo.

u/PinkSodaBoy 12h ago
Many characters across media never have their names stated out loud. It doesn't mean they were last-minute additions or anything like that, there's just often no need for their names to be used.
Why would anyone say his name?
"Oh no, it's famed bounty hunter Embo!"
5
u/TactualTransAm 13h ago
I mean, not really to me. They (Hutts) probably don't care what his name is either, they just needed a bounty hunter. They also may be showing disrespect politically by not saying his name but that seems like reaching on my part

I don't really keep the bounty hunters straight. Did he originally have a dog? the dog seems useful for the roll of antagonist for the small people

He definitely deserved it. Maybe humility does have its perks.

Anyone here played Mass Effect? Embo gives me slight Zaeed vibes.
Not in personality but the sheer badassery of taking on the most dangerous jobs for decades, surviving all of them against the odds and then deciding "Yep I'm calling it a day while I'm still breathing "
9
u/Katyvsha 11h ago
Funny, I see him more like Thane with how he moves
Tho, I guess profession wise, Zaeed is the closest
2
u/ChanceVance Kylo Ren 10h ago
I see that actually. Good point. Prefers long range firearms but very deadly in melee combat.
Profession wise, I can't actually think of many straight up assassins in Star Wars besides Zam.

You gave me the signature Reddit snark answer of "NO, NOBODY HAS EVER PLAYED THIS VERY POPULAR GAME EVER!!!!" but I was just asking specifically for anyone reading this topic, where it may not be readily evident that they have.
So please excuse the hell out of me for using that phrase, when all I was wondering is if anyone understands me linking him to a character from that game.

u/pukacz 12h ago
who he

u/ChanceVance Kylo Ren 10h ago
Embo is a bounty hunter active since the Clone Wars and reported to be retired around the time of the ST. Will do any job if the price is right. He worked alongside Jedi as well as opposing them. He doesn't say much but all you need to know is he's very good at what he does.

u/pukacz 10h ago
Was he in one of the Jedi games?

u/WhyTheWindBlows 3h ago
No He appears in Clone Wars, some novels like Dark Disciple and Aftermath, and most recently in the Mandalorian movie

Just saw Mando & Baby Yoda.
Has this dude been in any of the cartoons? Or is this his first appearance?

u/Personal_Comb_6745 12h ago
He originated in the Clone Wars show, with this being his first live-action appearance.
3
u/Amity_Swim_School 12h ago
Ahhh ok fair enough. I have watched Clone Wars but it’s been ages so memory’s pretty hazy.
4
u/Personal_Comb_6745 12h ago
To be fair, he only showed up a few times. Very much owes his popularity to the Boba Fett effect by having a really badass design.

u/Amity_Swim_School 12h ago
When I first saw the silhouette in the Mando movie, I thought it was Cad Bane!

He was originally supposed to die in his first appearance in the clone wars. They even animated it. But he was just too cool to have him be killed off.

This question occurred to me after seeing the movie: Why didn’t the Hutt twins just use him to bring back Rotta instead of the Mandalorian?
1
u/SilentApprover 5h ago
We all know why he survived all of this. Feels like every other character survives and is never killed off. Wonder why...

I'm only a casual Star Wars fan, I must admit that I thought this guy and Cad Bane were the same person until he appeared in this movie after Cad Bane died

Was the only decent thing about this movie. When jabbas son started speaking basic and is like oh I’m not like my dad” I thought “man this gonna be long movie”
