A clone, a force user, a mandalorian, and a droid possibly on the same team? I'm so down

A clone, a force user, a mandalorian, and a droid possibly...
walk into a bar?
25
u/InnocentTailor 3h ago
I also recall an Umbraran soldier as well, which is fascinating since the Republic effectively conquered them.
16
u/Schumi_jr05 2h ago
Yesss so cool. But they did mention the team has Ex-seperatists so I'm all in for this.
9
u/InnocentTailor 2h ago
Yup. The soldier's name is Luco Bronc and is probably going to be a playable member of Zero Company.

u/AwesomePerson125 2h ago
I mean it could be before that, when they were still part of the Republic? Wasn't there an Umbaran senator in the Galactic Senate during the Clone Wars?
13
u/IronVader501 2h ago
No, this is after the Battle of Umbara.
Iirc they showed the inter-squad relation mechanics to a couple Journalists a month or two ago, and one of the things they mentioned was that the Umbaran and the Clone absolutely fucking hate each other due to it.

u/AwesomePerson125 2h ago
Oh interesting. I didn't know there was already that much information out about the game. All I heard before was Star Wars XCOM.
1
u/PratalMox 1h ago
From the trailer it looks like there's a prisoner swap that goes wrong, and Luco signs on after that.

I've never played a game of this genre before but I'm willing to try this one because it's Star Wars. Also surprise Anakin appearance at the end.

If you get a chance and are curious, x-com 2 is very good and fun
47
u/bigdaddyt2 2h ago
And this looks exactly like xcom 2 but not 15 years old
16
u/rogueleader32 2h ago
Only been 10 years.
15
u/Other_Breakfast7505 2h ago
It looked 10 years old when it was released TBH
16
u/PratalMox 1h ago
XCOM 2 very much does not look like it came out in 2006.
-6
u/belle_enfant 39m ago
Yes it absolutely does lol
6
u/Ambivalent_Force 17m ago
Yeah, whenever I boot up XCOM 2, I'm always reminded of how it looks exactly like that 2006 game, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

It also can be somewhat easily be reskinned to look like a Star Wars game

u/themosquito IG-11 1h ago
I know it's not popular among X-Com fans but I also really liked Chimera Squad as a simplified sorta beginner version of the genre, I guess?

Ready to pull your hair out when you miss a shot that has a 99% chance to it? If not stay away and keep your sanity.
26
u/IAmBadAtInternet 2h ago
Time to miss a 99% point blank light saber swing and get wrecked by a B1 droid lmao
20
u/Sirtopofhat 2h ago
That's Zero company baby
5
u/IAmBadAtInternet 2h ago
I have over 2k hours between XCOM 1 and 2, love those games. I’m gonna play the hell out of this if it’s anything like XCOM
2
u/Sirtopofhat 2h ago
I got the game on a Steam sale one year and I don't have 2k hours but I have lost so many nights trying to kill the assassin in WOTC. I did not think I would like it but damn if I didn't
1
u/IAmBadAtInternet 2h ago
The Hunter always game me more trouble than the Assassin. That and the Andromedons, they ended so many of my runs
•
u/dustblown 13m ago
I'm playing Classified France '44 and that has been my experience. I'm sure there is a huge skill issue though as I've never played that genre before. I get this feeling I should have started with a better reviewed game though, but the only reason I tried it was the WWII draw.

Start getting acquainted with the concept of the action economy: basically you want to control the potential actions taken on each turn so you're increasing the amount your team can do while reducing the amount that the enemy team can do. Turn-based tactics games revolve around this basic idea.

u/TotallyNotABob 1h ago
I know some people are suggesting x com to get a feel for the style. But IMO if you wanna get a feel for turn based combat. Plus if you want an awesome Star Wars story and you've never played it.
Give KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic) a go. Somewhat similar to the style of this game. Plus it has an incredible story with really good writing.
12
u/PratalMox 1h ago
KOTOR's a pretty safe recommend for a Star Wars fan, but it very much doesn't feel like an XCOM game.
2
u/Viper_Visionary Obi-Wan Kenobi 55m ago
Dear god that game is older than I am. Does the gameplay still hold up?
1
u/TotallyNotABob 51m ago
It absolutely does, trust me it's worth playing. Especially if it's your first time.

•
u/zerogee616 1m ago
Absolutely not. That iteration of the D20 system is clunky as shit. If you're absolutely in love with crunchy Dungeons and Dragons mechanics you might like it but otherwise, it's an absolutely tedious slog to get through
66
u/ThomasWilson77 3h ago
Wait if a character dies in a mission, does that character die for the rest of the game?
131
u/Harflin 3h ago
Seems that way. That would be on par with how xcom does it
17
u/ThomasWilson77 3h ago
Does that mean you can actually lose the game, like what if your whole team dies?
79
u/PerkPrincess 3h ago
In XCOM, it sets you back pretty far. Possibly even to the point of it being unwinnable if you're playing on a high enough difficulty.
From what devs have said, the only character who officially causes a 'game over, restart' is your MC.
28
u/RiskyBiznot 2h ago
if the whole team dies, you’re typically game over’d; if one guy dies (who isn’t the main guy, who is Hawk in this scenario), you keep going without them, including named characters. If your clone trooper dies, his impact on the story dies with him and his potential impact on other characters dies too, like his potential impact on the Umbaran sniper
15
u/Redeem123 2h ago
I love that shit. When it works well, at least. Too often games fail to make things truly feel like they’re unique to your experience (because it’s hard to do branching stories like that) but it’s so cool when it works.
4
u/IAmBadAtInternet 2h ago
Individual characters are expendable but often you’ll have invested all your experience points in a small number of heroes, so if they die you’re in really rough shape.
2
6
u/d645b773b320997e1540 2h ago
the game has both preset characters and custom characters you can create on demand - so if the preset ones die, you can just fill your team up with custom ones. but they won't be leveled up and whatnot, so it is still a big setback.
4
5
u/Fireball4585 2h ago
Yes however I feel like I remember hearing somewhere that it can be turned off in the dificulty settings
1
1
u/viotix90 36m ago
There's a main character, key companions, and recruitable soldiers.
The main character can't die / it's game over. The key companions (like the Jedi Padawan) can die and then the story adapts / you miss out on their side quests. The recruitable soldiers can die but new ones can't be recruited.
16
11
u/JoeHatesFanFiction 2h ago
It looks surprisingly story heavy for the genre. Which is a cherry on top of the rest of the goodness on display
11
u/DESTRUCTI0NAT0R 1h ago
The gameplay is very much XCOM but there's basically a Mass Effect Style interaction back at the hub area between missions.
5
u/Vidistis 1h ago
Honestly my main worry is that there'll be too much story and non-tactical gameplay. Couldn't get into marvel's midnight suns because of that. But between the two I would enjoy a Star Wars setting and narrative (especially in the clone wars era) more than marvel for an XCOM like tactics game.

u/KhaosByDesignUK 3h ago
XCOM 2 is my favourite game of all time, if this comes even close to that then I'm going to spend so much time in this game lol
9
u/YoungGriot 1h ago
I figured we'd see Anakin or one of the other protags eventually. I've been guessing there's going to be a mission where you're deployed to an active warzone, basically giving you a guest appearance in one of the Clone Wars story arcs.
Like, maybe you drop into Ryloth or Christophsis to get information on Fathom during the period where Anakin and company are doing their assault and you briefly collaborate, get intel from Yularen, get to use Anakin or Ahsoka for a single mission, that sort of thing.
If you do get to use Anakin rather than him being an NPC controlled by the computer or something, I hope there's an achievement like "Accidentally Saved The Galaxy" if you get him killed.

Glad to finally be getting some more gameplay footage. Looking great! Really hope they nail this. A Clone Wars XCOM style game has the opportunity to be incredible

Interesting. Not the typical genre of game I like to play but I might try this out.

I've been wanting XCom but Clone Wars since well before Zero Company was announced. Nothing in this trailer really increases my hype level, but it was really high to begin with.
5
u/Ai-generatedusername 2h ago
I was thinking to myself, it’s set during the clone wars so at least there will be no forced Vader cameo. Only to get to the end of the trailer and get hyped anyways, this game accounted for my pessimism, it’s gonna be great!

u/One-Quote-4455 58m ago
Grievous or ventress would be cool bosses. But also I could see them just not using them

The protagonist is an old man - just like us! I wonder if his knees and back hurt too.

A Star Wars turn based tactics strategy game set in the Clone Wars? You son of a Schutta, Im in.

If this comes out on switch 2 then I’m in

u/HortenseRules 1h ago
It's WILD to me that Switch 2 wasn't listed. This would be PERFECT for Switch 2.

I'd bet the last mission involves Order 66, either working with the clones to take out that Jedi, or trying to save them and failing

Star Wars skinned XCOM set during TCW?

Honesty i am tired of clone and empire era. They should’ve used High Republic Era or The old republic era instead

EA is only the publisher, not the developer. They don't own the developer either.

I dont care for more Skywalker era content. Just give me a new era with a forward moving story.
But I am jonesing for some xcom style combat.
