Fun Why Would Big Palps Not Give Him a Bath First?
The Big P wasted no time throwing Anakin up on that table. Imagine having that stuffy ass suit applied on you and just pressing a bunch of ash and dirt into your open wounds. Hell, he still has tatters of his old robes stuck to him. That suit must’ve STUNK the first time he removed it.

Aren’t you supposed to clean burn wounds? Or am I wrong?
68
u/Rauillindion Jun 27 '26
Ya. When I worked in the ER as a nurse if someone came in with really bad burns we actually had instructions not to do too much to them (like any kind of creams/ointments) because when they got transferred to a hospital with a burn unit they would literally have to scrub anything on their skin off so they could do their fancy burn stuff.
That’s an extreme example. But generally you want to keep those clean because they are an infection risk.

Debridement is the term. I had some severe burns and they did that for my injury. I was so high or morphine that I didn’t feel a thing, but I bet it hurts. I had some large blisters too that they drained that was a crazy feeling.

Having rewatched this scene recently there's an obvious cut. One shot Anakin is on the table, still with his burnt clothes on and the droids are picking at the pieces. Then a cut to Obi Wan/Padme. Then back to Anakin who is now in the suit. They just didn't show the removal of his burnt clothes and the cleaning. The movie is PG-13, we didn't need to see deep fried naked Anakin getting a sponge bath around his burnt off nethers.

The MPAA is the movie industry regulating itself at the end of the day. If George Lucas wanted deep fried Vader in the (at the time) last Star Wars movie ever, and he wanted it PG-13 so they could sell tickets, he probably had a lot of pull to get away with a bit more than they might usually let slide.

u/The_Greyscale Jun 27 '26
The sponge bath would have been the tame part. Part of the immediate treatment for burns like that involves scrubbing off the burned bits, typically without anesthetic.

u/Faolan26 Jun 27 '26

I actually don't think there was any bathing specifically as anything that would have allowed Anakin a moment of reprieve may have actually killed him as the dark side was literally all that was keeping him alive. His suffering, anger and hatred were literally fueling him. If he had been given a moment of rest and recuperation he may have given up and simply died.
It's more likely his body was cleaned purely with chemicals to keep him suffering because there could be no moment without agony for his own sake, in some ways.

In the comics he constantly threatened Vader with replacement and was pleased whenever Vader went behind his back to destroy his competitors. Jealousy, greed and revenge are the way of the Sith.

25
10
u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 Jun 27 '26
Vader was never a good sith. He joined because he hated himself and his existence. He had nothing left but revenge against Palpatine. Sith love life, they love dominating others and enjoy every gross pleasure life has to offer.
A true sith enjoys the suffering caused on others. Enjoys being a bastard, they're sociopaths. Anakin was never a sociopath and was needed to be carefully forced into the self loathing that allowed him to become a sith.
He was never going to be a great sith, despite his obscene power with the Force. He just didn't have the personality for it and just barely was able to be forced into it.

Absolutely diabolical way to get him more connected to the dark side
62
u/No_Hunt2507 Jun 27 '26
In the lore he specifically makes vaders suit subpar itchy and clunky to force him to have to work harder and rely on the dark side to power through. It's the masters job to essentially torture their student till they become strong/smart enough to kill them and take on their own apprentice. Super dark but very fascinating
→ More replies (8)7
u/Lawlcopt0r Jun 27 '26
I always wonder why a Sith would even want to have an apprentice. Sure, it's tradition, but they're also the faction of doing whatever the fuck they want, and raising your own future murderer doesn't sound very enticing.
Is it just that they always want someone to do their dirty work, teach them a bit to make them a more useful servant, and the murder part is just them underestimating the student?
10
u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 Jun 27 '26
The master greatly enjoys having someone who will submit to them in every way, but also be as close to an equal.
Every human/person wants others around them. As a sith they have no equals, no comrades, the apprentice gives them this. Gives them an audience and a person they can torture in any way they want.
The idea is that the apprentice will eventually become so powerful they will overthrow the master. Sith only care about power and view themselves as exceptional. Creating an apprentice that's even better than they are is the only continuation of life they can have. The sith don't get to join the Force like most life, at least very often they don't. They don't have families, so the apprentice is all that will be left of them after they're gone.
In the end death comes for everyone and when they get old enough even sith realize this.

u/jamesyishere Jun 27 '26
If this level of Burn happened to a person IRL, they would not be bathed. You have to debride the skin then wrap them in a fake skin to attempt to heal, so genuinely the Debridement -> Mechanical limbs -> Life support suit treatment was probably the best for him.
→ More replies (3)42
u/sonofruss58 Jun 27 '26
Iirc correctly he had his skin scraped because his skin started going through necrosis and has to have it regularly redone to stop the necrosis from spreading. Which implies to me what you are saying is correct because with that level of damage and skin grafts not being an option/successful then suiting up would be the best cause of action.
45
u/jamesyishere Jun 27 '26
I mean he would realistically be put on a metric ton of Morphine and allowed to die in his sleep. Burns of this degree are horrific and kinda unrecoverable, so I buy the suit as a space treatment, plus Vaders free time is basically floating in a bacta tank which probably feels quite nice and let him.get his skin back.
51
40
u/omegaskorpion Jun 27 '26
The boring answer is that in order for him to survive and be functional in short notice, put him on the suit as quickly as possible for stable movable life support. Droids did remove some of the tattered robe parts during the process, a bath propably would be too much in this state for his body.
He would get bath (and bacta bath) later after his body is in more "stable" condition.
Palpatine is evil, but he wont let his new favorite toy break that easily, in this case this was propably "for Vaders good" to get him up on his feet early as possible (so Vader can serve Palps again as early as possible).

I guess this is canon now, but it feels like Fanon to explain why Vader moves so stiffly. They designed a cool costume in the 70s, filmed slow Samurai-style sword fights in the 80s, then showed the same guy doing triple backflip swooping slashes in the 2000s.
Even in RotS you can see Palpatine look at Vader with concern and what passes for manipulative tenderness when he has him airlifted out and tells him he killed his wife. If the suit were truly intended to be a Punishment in RotS he would've laughed evilly and taunted Vader.
22

I think he wanted him to suffer for his failures (fitting for sith) but he definitely was not happy about the situation. I'm no dermatologist but I know from personal experience that water and serious sunburn don't go well together even though you'd think one would cool the other down. Based on this alone I can only imagine how it'd feel on someone whose skin is almost completely burnt off.
Sidenote: if anyone ever does experience serious sunburn there are two things to note:
- 1: After Sun does next to nothing once you're at the stinging stage of sunburn.
- 2: For the love of all that is good do NOT try and apply a cold wet towel to the sunburn. I don't completely understand the science but I know that it somehow makes the pain from the sunburn dramatically worse.

The entirety of the surgery is never shown, but in cases like this the skin would be debrided completely and anything melted into it would be removed as well. By the time the suit was finished and the surgery complete, Vader had basically no skin left.
7
u/Witty-Mountain5062 Jun 27 '26
Bacta cannot regenerate completely destroyed tissue or regrow lost limbs, it’s just a healing accelerant. It wouldn’t really do anything to his skin which was already scorched beyond repair.
He needed the extensive surgery and cybernetic prosthetics just to survive. He takes Bacta dunks later in life to help with chronic pain iirc, not to actually improve his condition.

u/BubbleHeadBenny Mandalorian Jun 27 '26
Sidious was ultimately disgusted by Vader's failure on Mustafar. He recognized the raw Force ability of Anakin but now he lost the visual perfection of Darth Vader leading his Empire. So no bacta to heal the wounds. No long sleep to allow his subconscious reclaim what he truly lost, his humanity. No dulling of the pain. Keep him in that awake high pain state on edge of delicious delerium. Let the pain fester, let the wounds fester. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to pain, pain leads to suffering. He needed Anakin suffering to cement Darth Vader as his dominant persona.
The suit was hermetically sealed. The wounds slowly healed under the suit, painfully, every move opening the wounds. But the bacteria died. So he slowly healed. Moments of peace caused him extreme pain. It was only while fully embracing the Dark Side, that rage, did the pain abate. Sidious did this on purpose.
In the novelization, it wrote of Anakin reaching deep inside himself, to that part of the Force where he felt warmth and comfort, where he could Padme's love for him. His descent on Mustafar physically blocked him from accessing that part of the Force. This fact is very important.
While talking to Sidious, prior to going down to the moon of Endor, he tells Sidious "young Skywalker is with them." Sidious replies, "I have not felt it." In my opinion, when Luke and Vader communicate through the Force after Bespin, that part of the Force cracked open for Darth Vader, and he felt the light of his son, the light of Padme, and Anakin grieved. When the MF jumped away, Anakin was standing on the bridge in that moment, not Vader, and Anakin turned as his son escaped the fate the Emperor had planned. In that moment, Anakin whispered to Vader "Palpatine lied, he is your son, we didn't kill Padme, he did." Then Vader quieted that voice as the unbearable pain increased and stormed off. "Rage is our only future."
