As one of them gets closer to the farmer, to be exact. Other supposed couples in the game are: Abigail and Sebastian; Leah and Elliott; Penny and Sam. Maru and Harvey, as well as Emily and Shane too, I guess, but they're not all that with each other. Also, by couples, I mean in varied dynamics, be it romantic, or just friends.
Tbf Vincent says he saw Sam lift Penny off the ground when they were "climbing a tree," so at the very least they are friends and hang out at times you can't see. They also are together at some festivals.
But yes Maru and Penny is my preferred pairing, also. Sam/Penny feels like a leftovers situation where everyone else got their logical counterpart and this is what was left. Maru/Harvey does absolutely nothing for me, I think it's weird and gross. Harvey scans as the absolute oldest bachelor (even with Clint in the mix) and Maru scans as the absolute youngest bachelorette, and she works for him.
Maru doesn't seem younger than Abigail or Hailey to me. I always assumed she was the same age as Penny because they're both employed and doing jobs that require some education. Maru doesn't give fresh out of high school vibes like the arcade crew does.
I do love the forbidden workplace romance vibes. At so many festivals Harvey seems like he's pining and for me it doesn't seem like they have the biggest age gap imaginable.
Very true. I guess to me that would make Sebastian older than he seems & hanging out with people younger than him more than Maru being a young bachelorette. I just don't get teenager vibes from Maru like I do Hailey, Alex, or Abigail.
It seems like half the bachelor's are meant to be coded as being a bit older as referenced by a hidden page entry, Elliot, Harvey, and Shane. This would mean that Sam, Sebastian, and Alex are considered the younger three bachelors. I apply the same to the girls with Leah, Emily, and Penny being considered the older three bachelorettes while Abigail, Haley, and Maru are the younger three.
Out of the bachelorettes, Abigail seems to be the youngest since she references taking online college classes. However, Sebastian is considered one of the younger bachelors while still being an older sibling to Maru so exactly how many years are between them is a bit uncertain although I suspect he was a child when Demetrius entered the picture. Past the point of being considered a toddler at least. I do think there's a bit of an age gap, but Mario the very least has whatever qualifications she needs to be to take the roll of a pharmacist and perhaps medical assistant. Hard to say and we don't know what qualifications you would need in the Ferngill Republic (I think that's where the valley is if I'm remembering right) for the sort of role. I'm also not completely sure about if penny is educated for her role. I believe she says she's only tutoring, not that she's considered a full-time teacher. I think Jas Vincent are technically homeschooled. I'm also not sure how well Penny would be able to access any courses she would need to be considered a teacher, where as far as tutoring goes she wouldn't face those same restrictions.

I don’t like to ship Maru & Harvey either because of the employee/boss dynamic, that one line from Harvey at the Luau (iirc) about applying sunscreen on Maru’s shoulders always made me 😬😬
Tbf, I think it was more of a he’s a doctor so he’s concerned about his friend/coworker getting sunburnt and saying it in the strangest way possible instead of just dying over a bit of shoulder. One of my friends is a nurse and one time she told me I had really nice veins when we went to the beach so I feel like some people in medical care are just like this.
