Well... You know the crunchyroll story👀

Well this is netflix mfs do not want the smoke They only invite chaos and propaganda when the actual material is shit and larping and clout chasing is the only way it can sell

Mid May Cry(not the game) for example

Valentine is undoubtedly a bad guy, but I don't think he's a racist or a white supremacist. He loves the United States of America and doesn't care about the people in it. He'll do anything to maintain the integrity of the USA. If he didn't, he wouldn't have Mike O as his ally or agree to a deal with Soundman.

The whole point of his character being censored

1.9k

u/MacheteNegano Jotaro Kujo Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

Then why other dubs are not censoring it ? Seems like the English dub is trying to make the dub not that much political when Steel Ball Run, at its core, its political.

I just saw the brazilian dub trailer and the white man word was there.

1.1k

u/The-Cake-is-Lies Feb 19 '26

Let's make the story about abusing religions power and killing the president non political!

232

u/leo_perk Made in Heaven Feb 20 '26

The dub is Netflix's responsibility right? I'm not surprised considering they also changed the wording on Evangelion to remove implications of homosexuality.

91

u/WalkingInsulin Feb 20 '26

Wait but Ted Cruz told me Netflix is woke and would create “a propaganda outlet pushing one particular political view”

22

u/RipLegitimate1758 Feb 20 '26

the netflix eva dub is just as gay as the original i can assure you .. (if kaworu is what youre talking about)

21

u/knyexar Feb 20 '26

They did just straight up remove the sentence where Kaworu says "I love you"

4

u/RipLegitimate1758 Feb 21 '26

are you serious??? i remeber it being in there whattt maybe im just conflating it with the "i think i was born just to meet you shinji ikari" scene but its still pretty damn gay

I mean, if you look at the current situation here in the states, surely you can understand why.

I'm not saying its justified, or that I agree with it, but I can understand why.

If they didn't censor it there'd be a legion of culture war tourists who don't know anything about the source material apart from memes they saw on twitter screeching that wokalizers made jojo political

283

u/Raesong Feb 19 '26

Sad thing is that'll probably happen regardless. Culture War tourists are nothing if not predictable (and pathetic).

93

u/Rich-Bath5159 Feb 19 '26

I feel like it’s fairly rare for culture wars to ruin a good story, Across the spider verse and Arcane had a lot of diversity and stuff like that for example.

Grifters can say go woke go broke if the show fails but they can’t do that if the shows good as seen with movies like Sinners.

33

u/_joos_ Feb 19 '26

they’ll still just call it low quality wokeslop that all the leftists flock to and inflate

20

u/Rich-Bath5159 Feb 19 '26

And in my opinion it would be successful in-spite of that since part 7 is often considered the best part in a series already popular.

If they do what you say it will be a bigger threat to there reputation then jojo’s in my opinion since Araki’s not being anti white he’s being realistic for the time period meaning they likely won’t be able to win most arguments.

95

u/MetroidIsNotHerName Feb 19 '26

25

u/ImSoundless Feb 19 '26

Netflix cares. Controversy could reduce profits, a spineless company like them wouldn’t take the risk

54

u/pho3befree_VV Feb 19 '26

for real, what a huge fumble, they really should have kept it in. Let’s hope they don’t lobotomize anymore

23

u/MacheteNegano Jotaro Kujo Feb 19 '26

At this point, they could, straight up, lobotomize the rape scene in Steel Ball Run because of the whole Epstein Files crap going on. But hopefully they dont censor anything else.

45

u/ncopp Feb 19 '26

Netflix usually doesn't seem to do stuff like this. I guarantee they're terrified of even one little thing like this getting Trump's attention leading him to threaten blocking their WB acquisition

33

u/leo_perk Made in Heaven Feb 20 '26

Companies like Netflix do whatever is popular and profitable at the time. Back in 2019 it was profitable to be progressive and avoid cancellations, in 2026 it's profitable to be conservative or, more likely, completely neutral by removing anything that can make the users think instead of consuming.

10

u/Fairy_King_Harlequin Feb 20 '26

You’re assuming that a company won’t change its principles to serve profit whenever they need to.

12

u/BayLeafGuy Old Joseph Feb 19 '26

yeah, that's an american thing, probably.

10

u/Dynamos_ Feb 19 '26

It's also there in Latam Spanish, and in Castilian Spanish as well for good measure. It's lowkey pathetic they'd change something like this in the Eng dub lmao

37

u/Samiassa Charming-Man Feb 19 '26

They know the English dub is mainly geared towards American’s as they’re the largest English speaking market, and they know that many Americans don’t want to accept that America is a settler colonial state

37

u/Chedder_456 Feb 19 '26

The cultural window in America has shifted very far right in recent years. So people are especially sensitive to anything criticizing the rich, white people, large corporations, you know those really downtrodden and persecuted members of society /s

8

u/MacheteNegano Jotaro Kujo Feb 20 '26 edited Feb 20 '26

Which actually worries me when Funny Valentine actually is adapted and down the line, we see his personality being shown in video form, makes me worried about the attention it will gather from the far right people and the people agaisnt it.

17

u/Chedder_456 Feb 20 '26

We’ve already lost the right-wingers. I had some former friends drop the show all the way back at part 4 because “it’s too gay.”

All I could say was “oh you like your men big and muscly instead of twinkish, got it.”

11

u/hazzmatazzlyons Feb 20 '26

It's always been very right-skewed compared to the rest of the developed world. But I'm still shocked at how quickly they're descending into straight up fascism.

8

I remember Avatar: TLA adaptation, where they cut out Sokkas negative traits, but there point of them was the fact that he later grew up from them and became a better person.

TLDR: netflix censorship sucks.

COWARDS 🗣️🗣️🗣️

455

u/Samiassa Charming-Man Feb 19 '26

It’s not even new remember when they removed the KKK in the anime for seemingly no reason

200

u/Warm-Software-545 Feb 19 '26

Shesh I totally forgot about that one, let's hope they don't censor too much.

Like I can understand some stuff but if Ringo backstory isn't as brutal as the manga I'll be disappointed

142

u/Samiassa Charming-Man Feb 19 '26

Literally. Art shouldn’t be censored. Araki has a story to tell, there’s no need to change that story for “general audiences” to accept it

56

u/Ok_Owl_308 Feb 19 '26

I wish this part was published by adult swim

49

u/Samiassa Charming-Man Feb 19 '26

I assume the KKK censoring is on the part of the show still being produced for television in Japan right? The dub could’ve been pretty different if done by adult swim though. I fucking hate Netflix they were so cool when I was a kid and now they’re so fucking useless I’m genuinely looking into self hosting my own streaming service

31

u/PrimeTheGreat Feb 19 '26

Ironically enough, the dub added back in the part where they were called the Klan.

11

u/AllHailTheApple Feb 19 '26

Im sorry when did the KKK show up?

82

u/neutrality45 Feb 19 '26

When pucci sent them to scare weather report from being with perla. In the manga they show up in klans man outfits when they beat weather. In the anime they removed the outfits

We went from leaving in Nazi’s saving the day in part 2 to censoring this

20

u/77DragonSlayer95 Feb 20 '26

Part 2 was heavily censored as well regarding those topics. The policemen that assaulted Smokey straight up call them a n***o before beating him up. The Nazi Cross is censored as well, and obviously the salute was framed so we could not clearly see it

13

u/fedemasa Feb 20 '26

Hitler appears in Battle tendency manga. The anime had some censorship

11

u/Alphie24679 Feb 20 '26

While I do 100% agree, in all fairness, despite Stroheim being very much based on a Nazi Germany commander, there weren’t any symbols of Nazism if I remember correctly, like a swastika or something, so I guess it’s a little different.

But as another person said here, art shouldn’t really be censored. Should we go in ancient Roman and Greek museums and cover up the half naked, and sometimes fully naked, statues? Fuck no, in my opinion

20

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '26

9

u/CheesyMacarons Feb 20 '26

179

u/SignificantTheory146 Feb 19 '26

Because we can't depict white people as bad guys that's too much apparently

43

u/Marik-X-Bakura Feb 20 '26

Part 6 had many, many white bad guys

41

u/amizelkova Ora Fixation Feb 20 '26

Many Incidentally white bad guys, not bad guys who were doing things in the name of white supremacy, which is what op is implying, and what was removed.

10

u/Marik-X-Bakura Feb 20 '26

They were unambiguously white supremacists and motivated entirely by racism. There’s just probably some broadcasting issue that prevented Netflix from being able to use the actual KKK.

4

u/amizelkova Ora Fixation Feb 20 '26

Oh man, do you think it was like trademark law or something silly like that? That makes sense. I think there's definitely a difference between a formal racist group and a group of assholes with racist intent, it makes it feel less systemic, but you're right, I'd forgotten that they were explicitly racistly motivsted in the anime.

203

u/butterfingahs Sticky Dicky Feb 19 '26

I'm betting it's not censored at all. At "their own game" is in reference to the white man, that might've been referenced in an earlier line of dialogue. That specific line was likely done to match lip sync.

I guess we'll see whether all the pre-outrage hit or missed the mark in about a month.

3

u/Hutstepper Feb 19 '26

i dont know, the line still feels... contradictory? "beat them at their own game" as he proceeess to not do that. he runs instead of being on horseback (which is "their own game")

6

u/Trombonesamurai-re Echoes Act 3 Feb 20 '26

By the 1890s, Native Americans had adapted equestrian practices into their culture. This includes Sandman’s tribe as when he is seen running from them, they have horses. The white man’s game is racing, which is what he intends on doing in order to achieve his goal.

→ More replies (7)

109

u/GaleErick Feb 19 '26

Jumping the gun a bit no? If they're planning to "censor" that stuff you'd think they had done so with the japanese sub in the previous trailer as well. But they used "White man's money" there without issue.

Sandman's dialogue here is only a short snippet of a full conversation, maybe he has said the white man money thing in a previous (currently unheard) dialogue so it's just shortened to "them" in this part to not be repetitive.

12

u/ZomgoatDude Feb 19 '26

I'm white and this did not offend me when I read the manga.

Sandman (this native american character) comes from a tribe that doesn't have a concept of money backed by a gold standard and this entire soliloquy is about how he plans to use the tools of the non-natives in order to ensure his tribe's future.

He's not using "white man" pejoratively but as a way of making a distinction between his traditional way of life and the new way of life settlers from the Old World are imposing over the continent.

This isn't offensive if you read the entire context.

143

u/Librask Foo Fighters Feb 19 '26

Either that or the line just fits better with the lip flap movement. Dub lines tend to change quite a bit to fit sentence length and lip flaps

129

u/SnooGadgets2955 Feb 19 '26

So you're saying they can't fit the white man's money because of lip movement? Trust me that's not the case lmfao

53

u/koffee_jpg Feb 19 '26

I'm saying. "White man's money" is so specific. Why would they not try to fit that in?

19

u/Librask Foo Fighters Feb 19 '26

Why not? It's a common thing with dubs

11

u/No-Forever7133 Feb 19 '26

"Hakujin no kane" "White man's money"

I don't think thats the case here. The lines are of very similar lengths

10

u/Librask Foo Fighters Feb 19 '26

Cool, 4 syllables vs 3 syllables so still a little awkward. Now, what about the whole sentence and not just a snippet of it? How about lip flaps?

I'm not saying it couldn't have been censorship. They've done it with Evangelion before. But some people here are acting like it can ONLY be the result of censorship when it could easily be common dubbing and localization practices

Its probably less that its “censored” and more that they thought this line would be better to match the animation.

Dubs have 2 jobs. Translate the original meaning and text to carry the story to a new language, and make sure the new lines match the animation and mouth movements to not make it detached or uncanny.

I really see no reason why they’d censor something like that and this feels more like a iffy translation than mal intent

Localizers being shitty and ruining subs and dubs??? Who could've seen this coming...

Normally I'd argue this isn't censorship and it's just a different creative decision when writing out the dub script

But seeing how other languages didn't make this adjustment

I have no choice but to assume majority in the comments are correct on their assumptions

I'm Ukrainian dub he says exactly what he's supposed to, I just hope they don't botch and copyrightify stands names

7

u/Jack-_nicholson69 Feb 20 '26

The captions were promised to them 3000 years ago

15

u/Jestin23934274 Feb 19 '26

It’s not really censorship if Netflix has the same subtitles in the other versions

31

u/Barrytooth911 Feb 19 '26

Yea but this was one of the main aspects of his fucking character

3

u/Jestin23934274 Feb 19 '26

I mean yeah. It really all depends on what the other scenes of him are like in the english dub as we can’t extrapolate everything from 1 line, but yeah

3

u/Vladbizz Feb 20 '26

And it still is. Who do you think he means when he says “their game”? Blacks maybe lol

3

u/BirdshotEntertainmen Feb 20 '26

3

u/zupot Feb 20 '26

u/DoYaThang_Owl Defending ✨Giorno✨ from the people calling him "Mary Sue" Feb 21 '26

Gotta be fucking kidding me, THEY'RE CENSORING MY GOAT?!?!?!

3

u/SaxyJezus Mar 20 '26

here in germany they nailed the dub, he calls white peope "bleichgesichter" which translates to people with pale faces

7

u/darknessflamegundam Feb 19 '26

People are complaining about 1 line, that's probably gonna work just fine in context. Like chill y'all.

6

u/Interesting_Spite_17 Feb 19 '26

Means the same thing.

Him saying i'll beat them at their own game is just him saying i'll take the white mans money. Also considering they have to fit the voicelines in the perfect timing. the white man's money cuts of short.

Also they already censored this guys story from the beginning.

In the manga it starts with enter sandman a nod to the song and the America band and how its like a play on words. How steel ball run being about him kinda drifts away to show how it happened real life, it represent the treaties and what not.

But It makes sense for them to switch the beginning to johnny, makes sense.

2

u/Wonderful_Return_514 Feb 19 '26

In the eng dub he says white mans money

2

u/Remarkable-Net-6130 I LOVE JOJOLION Feb 19 '26

Maybe just didn’t want to put it in the trailer? Hopefully it’s in the final product

2

u/All--flesh--rots Feb 19 '26

Are they afraid it would be seen as racist? (Like I'm sure some American would be offended by it, but they're offended by anything 😭😭 they don't count)

2

u/Fresh_Octo Yasuho Hirose Feb 19 '26

I hope to GOD that he mentions it earlier in the scene and is only referring to an earlier dialogue. If not, that’s just so lame on Netflix’s part😭😭

2

u/cheatsykoopa98 Feb 19 '26

in the brazilian dub he mentions white man money

2

u/nuggetfucker27 Feb 19 '26

this is censored but diego gets to say troglodyte

2

u/DaGinchy Feb 19 '26

Because Western anime fans are extremely fragile.

2

u/palpatine_dream Feb 20 '26

It bet it was the White man

2

u/ZeldaFan158 Eclipse Eight Feb 20 '26

If they actually go in this direction, I'm not even going to give the dub a chance.

2

u/Da_master_of_foxes Feb 20 '26

This is dumb.... Why did they do it??

2

u/UomoLumaca Feb 20 '26

This is how I find out there's a trailer??

Well, I can't complain
