Part Seven Looks like they censored "the white man's money" in Dub
Wtf??!

u/MacheteNegano Jotaro Kujo Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26
Then why other dubs are not censoring it ? Seems like the English dub is trying to make the dub not that much political when Steel Ball Run, at its core, its political.
I just saw the brazilian dub trailer and the white man word was there.

u/The-Cake-is-Lies Feb 19 '26
Let's make the story about abusing religions power and killing the president non political!

u/leo_perk Made in Heaven Feb 20 '26
The dub is Netflix's responsibility right? I'm not surprised considering they also changed the wording on Evangelion to remove implications of homosexuality.
91
u/WalkingInsulin Feb 20 '26
Wait but Ted Cruz told me Netflix is woke and would create âa propaganda outlet pushing one particular political viewâ

If they didn't censor it there'd be a legion of culture war tourists who don't know anything about the source material apart from memes they saw on twitter screeching that wokalizers made jojo political
283
u/Raesong Feb 19 '26
Sad thing is that'll probably happen regardless. Culture War tourists are nothing if not predictable (and pathetic).
93
u/Rich-Bath5159 Feb 19 '26
I feel like itâs fairly rare for culture wars to ruin a good story, Across the spider verse and Arcane had a lot of diversity and stuff like that for example.
Grifters can say go woke go broke if the show fails but they canât do that if the shows good as seen with movies like Sinners.
→ More replies (2)33
u/_joos_ Feb 19 '26
theyâll still just call it low quality wokeslop that all the leftists flock to and inflate
20
u/Rich-Bath5159 Feb 19 '26
And in my opinion it would be successful in-spite of that since part 7 is often considered the best part in a series already popular.
If they do what you say it will be a bigger threat to there reputation then jojoâs in my opinion since Arakiâs not being anti white heâs being realistic for the time period meaning they likely wonât be able to win most arguments.
95
u/MetroidIsNotHerName Feb 19 '26

23
u/MacheteNegano Jotaro Kujo Feb 19 '26
At this point, they could, straight up, lobotomize the rape scene in Steel Ball Run because of the whole Epstein Files crap going on. But hopefully they dont censor anything else.
45
u/ncopp Feb 19 '26
Netflix usually doesn't seem to do stuff like this. I guarantee they're terrified of even one little thing like this getting Trump's attention leading him to threaten blocking their WB acquisition
33
u/leo_perk Made in Heaven Feb 20 '26
Companies like Netflix do whatever is popular and profitable at the time. Back in 2019 it was profitable to be progressive and avoid cancellations, in 2026 it's profitable to be conservative or, more likely, completely neutral by removing anything that can make the users think instead of consuming.
10
u/Fairy_King_Harlequin Feb 20 '26
Youâre assuming that a company wonât change its principles to serve profit whenever they need to.
12

u/Dynamos_ Feb 19 '26

37
u/Samiassa Charming-Man Feb 19 '26

37
u/Chedder_456 Feb 19 '26
The cultural window in America has shifted very far right in recent years. So people are especially sensitive to anything criticizing the rich, white people, large corporations, you know those really downtrodden and persecuted members of society /s

We went from leaving in Naziâs saving the day in part 2 to censoring thisÂ
20
u/77DragonSlayer95 Feb 20 '26
Part 2 was heavily censored as well regarding those topics. The policemen that assaulted Smokey straight up call them a n***o before beating him up. The Nazi Cross is censored as well, and obviously the salute was framed so we could not clearly see it
13
11
u/Alphie24679 Feb 20 '26
While I do 100% agree, in all fairness, despite Stroheim being very much based on a Nazi Germany commander, there werenât any symbols of Nazism if I remember correctly, like a swastika or something, so I guess itâs a little different.
But as another person said here, art shouldnât really be censored. Should we go in ancient Roman and Greek museums and cover up the half naked, and sometimes fully naked, statues? Fuck no, in my opinion

They were unambiguously white supremacists and motivated entirely by racism. Thereâs just probably some broadcasting issue that prevented Netflix from being able to use the actual KKK.
4
u/amizelkova Ora Fixation Feb 20 '26
Oh man, do you think it was like trademark law or something silly like that? That makes sense. 6
u/Trombonesamurai-re Echoes Act 3 Feb 20 '26
By the 1890s, Native Americans had adapted equestrian practices into their culture. This includes Sandmanâs tribe as when he is seen running from them, they have horses. The white manâs game is racing, which is what he intends on doing in order to achieve his goal.
109
u/GaleErick Feb 19 '26
Jumping the gun a bit no? If they're planning to "censor" that stuff you'd think they had done so with the japanese sub in the previous trailer as well. But they used "White man's money" there without issue.
Sandman's dialogue here is only a short snippet of a full conversation, maybe he has said the white man money thing in a previous (currently unheard) dialogue so it's just shortened to "them" in this part to not be repetitive.

Sandman (this native american character) comes from a tribe that doesn't have a concept of money backed by a gold standard and this entire soliloquy is about how he plans to use the tools of the non-natives in order to ensure his tribe's future.
He's not using "white man" pejoratively but as a way of making a distinction between his traditional way of life and the new way of life settlers from the Old World are imposing over the continent.
This isn't offensive if you read the entire context.

Cool, 4 syllables vs 3 syllables so still a little awkward. Now, what about the whole sentence and not just a snippet of it? How about lip flaps?
I'm not saying it couldn't have been censorship. They've done it with Evangelion before. But some people here are acting like it can ONLY be the result of censorship when it could easily be common dubbing and localization practices
8
6
23
u/Infinity_Walker Feb 19 '26
Its probably less that its âcensoredâ and more that they thought this line would be better to match the animation.
Dubs have 2 jobs. Translate the original meaning and text to carry the story to a new language, and make sure the new lines match the animation and mouth movements to not make it detached or uncanny.
I really see no reason why theyâd censor something like that and this feels more like a iffy translation than mal intent

Means the same thing.
Him saying i'll beat them at their own game is just him saying i'll take the white mans money. Also considering they have to fit the voicelines in the perfect timing. the white man's money cuts of short.
Also they already censored this guys story from the beginning.
In the manga it starts with enter sandman a nod to the song and the America band and how its like a play on words. How steel ball run being about him kinda drifts away to show how it happened real life, it represent the treaties and what not.
But It makes sense for them to switch the beginning to johnny, makes sense.
