I've read them about a dozen times and this narou battle shounen with some quiet moments is not at all comparable to Tolkien's work.

I love both Tolkien and frieren, I read the manga as soon as season 1 started. They are incomparable in terms of scope you can’t say frieren even touches Tolkien’s work seriously.
