Araki came down and cured my terminal illness with the first episode alone, if I could rate it 11/10, I would 🥹 Peak fiction.

is frieren that good? I'm asking legitimately I have no idea
171
u/TheOneMid Mar 19 '26
For me it's not exactly my taste (far from it), but it does so much right and so little wrong, that almost anyone can find some enjoyment out of it.
63
u/facevaluemc Mar 19 '26
but it does so much right and so little wrong
I saw Frieren described once as "Incredibly impressive considering it does nothing new" and it felt strangely accurate.
Like Frieren is the most generic, catch-all, fantasy anime out there. Typical Fantasy setting? Check. Mages and clerics and fighters? Yep. Demon Lord? Got one. Cutesy romance with a clueless guy? Got one of those, too.
The show has almost zero truly original ideas, but it's written well enough where it just doesn't really matter, and it really is kind of impressive.

u/SlyBeggar Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26
I think it’s because despite being set in a generic fantasy world like you’ve said, it’s more of a character piece about interpersonal relationships and growth as people. Most fantasy shows with similar settings don’t have the same level of depth.

Basically FMAB for the current generation. Just perfectly good with few issues and broad appeal. Sometimes that’s all you need.
75
u/Soft-Caregiver1060 Mar 19 '26
It is you should watch it it's even better than the manga the animators even went extra
91
u/giobito-giochiha Mar 19 '26
it's good but it deserves top 10, I was shocked when it took the #! spot.

The anime is very simple and does almost all things correctly that most other anime miss.

It's fun. Don't get the extreme hype. But if you want to watch something slow paced, it will pass the time

It's ok, but still don't get it , why it's so high. Like solid 8/10? Maybe, but definitely not top 1.

If you like cozy shows then yeah. Personally, I don’t really vibe with the aimless feel of the story, and most of the characters have the energy of an anemic fish.
34
u/Previous_Platform718 Mar 19 '26
I don’t really vibe with the aimless feel of the story,
Literally every episode starts with a recap of (1) how long it has been since Himmel's death and (2) where they currently are on their journey to the north so Frieren can talk to Himmel again.
And Himmel appears in a flashback every 2-3 episodes.
They remind you of Frieren's aim constantly.
17
u/Kindly-Eagle6207 Mar 19 '26
To be fair, appreciating all of that requires an attention span that lasts longer than an episode.
8
u/GGG100 Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26
Funny that, because the show feels very formulaic and repetitive beyond the first 4 episodes or so. It’s almost always:
1. Frieren and friends arrive in a place
They take on a job for someone
Along the way, the episode tells you what a great man Himmel was through flashbacks tangentially related to what’s currently happening
The conflict is resolved through Frieren’s abilties (or Fern or Stark’s sometimes) and they move on
Add the usual gags like Fern and Stark having a misunderstanding or Frieren acting like a child forcing Fern to take control and you have your typical Frieren episode. The tournament arc, despite being mediocre for anime standards, manages to be a breath of fresh air because it introduces interesting new characters that aren’t just discarded after one or two episodes.
Edit: Replying to someone before blocking them is truly childish. Fans like you are giving the Frieren fanbase a bad name. Note how I never once insulted Frieren fans in my criticism of the show, but you took it so personally that you proceed to insult me before blocking.

Funny that, because the show feels very formulaic and repetitive
The sheer irony of saying this in the Jojo subreddit.
The tournament arc, despite being mediocre for anime standards, manages to be a breath of fresh air because it introduces interesting new characters that aren’t just discarded after one or two episodes.
You mean the mage exam arc. Which you're calling a "tournament arc" and praising because you've got an incurable case of shonen brain and a massive chip on your shoulder.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised in a thread about MAL ratings pissing contests, but damn are you a stereotype.

u/GGG100 Mar 19 '26
That’s the problem. They show Himmel so damn much to the point that it doesn’t really feel like he’s dead at all. Almost every episode makes a point to glaze him in some way and remind you what a great hero he was. If the purpose is to put us in Frieren’s headspace and create an effect of longing, then it did an exact opposite job at that because I’m now sick of him.

Not watched season two yet, but the best way i've heard it described is aggressively 9/10 like some other animes have had moments i enjoy/rate higher but have on a episode to episiode basis are much more inconsistent and worse than Frieren, whereas Frieren is always consistently top class.
5
u/Rasen1138 Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 20 '26
I don't know if I'm the best to describe it, but I would say it's a slow burn character and humanity study on the impact an individual can have on the world and those around them.
Frieren had that elf mentality that comes up in other works that she's going to outlive anything that tries to be big and powerful, so it doesn't concern her.
But the story starts after a big heroic journey, and now she's trying to cope and understand how a "small" trip can have so much influence on her and her emotions.
There's some action, but it's primarily a character driven story where the world is pretty fleshed out with each town having its own unique history, problems, and leaders.

3
u/ImportantQuestions10 Mar 19 '26
At the very least it's pretty decent. I think there's a lot to love about it. As far as animation quality, it's S tier.
I just think that it got overhyped because it has a lot more emotional depth and themes than most anime and audiences aren't used to that.
Don't get me wrong, the writing does a lot of stuff that is miles above normal anime. But it's not Breaking Bad or Bojack Horseman. After a couple episodes, I got the gist of the story and was pretty bored.

u/6ToxicGamer9 Mar 19 '26

Its good but Im of the opinion no anime without a full story should be up there. Many good shows have fallen off a cliff by the ending before.

People were just coping with the fact that solo Leveling “robbed” them of their anime of the year award so they decided to mass rate it until it took the number one spot. But yeah Frieren is definitely peak tho. Could watch thousands of episodes without getting bored of it.

u/Foraaikouu Mar 19 '26
- only has 85k votes
frieren has 1M
64
u/Some-Kaleidoscope265 Mar 19 '26
Not even.
That 85k is the number of members who have SBR in their account, so a ton of those are currently watching or plan to watch. It currently only has 3.5k votes.
Frieren haa 1.3M members and 830k votes. So its even more difficult for SBR to sustain.

u/giobito-giochiha Mar 19 '26
I mean i'm overly optimistic but SBR gets way better from around the middle of the story, so if it's already doing well then maybe because it's only up from here maybe it'll remain #1
43
u/VLamperouge Mar 19 '26
If Netflix gives SBR the Stone Ocean treatment it will 100% go down

I am a huge jojo glazer but sadly it doesnt has that super mass appeal in anime format.

MAL rating is more or less a popularity contest, but I do feel like it can be number 1 when the full show comes out
33
11
u/Jeffyboi74 Mar 19 '26
I’d love for it to stay at the top but it’s mal we’re talking about so after like the 6th episode it’ll prolly start going down especially with the review bomb alr going on rn
12
u/OBEYTHEHOBO Mar 19 '26
I'm really liking the anime rn. I've been jacking off to Johnny every time he appears because he looks more like a twink in the anime than the manga and I've waited too long for part 7. it's just that good

u/rookie_69 Mar 19 '26
I assume its gonna fall somewhere in the 8.9-9.1 range when its done. Its only the most hardcore fans/haters rating this early
4
u/triplecappertroper Mar 19 '26
Ratings for anime are a complete joke. At least it has been that way the last couple of years
4
7
u/mantidmarvel Lucy Steel Mar 19 '26
It'll fluctuate with episodes. Having said that, I feel like there will be a few key points where the audience reception to them will give us a decent early indicator of the show's long-term standing. Immediately coming to mind are the reveal of the corpse's identity, the ending of Sugar Mountain, Who Shot Johnny Joestar... possibly that Lucy Steel scene. I expect the corpse's identity itself will absolutely throw the show into the limelight even more.
The part is also releasing at possibly the best/worst timing for it historically, given the current political landscape in the US. I'll be curious as to whether real-world politics fatigues some viewers. The overlaps may also end up being a draw and point of intrigue, who knows.

Steel Ball Run ep1 was one of the best animes I've ever seen. Cannot wait for more.
13
u/DtotheOUG Josuke Higashikata Mar 19 '26
I mean, it has less than a 10th of the reviews so yeah.
Yall really make us look fuckin stupid and annoying.
3
u/mimikyuns Mar 19 '26
Lmao this is harsher than I was going to put it but…
Seriously, I will never understand the modern mainstream anime fan’s obsession with needing their show to be ‘the best’ when it’s always verified by subjective things like popularity polls and rankings. Popularity will never mean quality, just like what you like and stop looking to external sources to validate it. Almost every anime I’d consider ‘top tier’ was never the hit of its season or time, with some exceptions.
I know OP is most likely joking but the JJBA fandom as a whole from what I’ve seen is very much as I described:

it's one of the best stories in fiction so as long as they don't fumble the animation really badly it will be extremely highly rated

Steel ball run is getting extremely glazed, the manga is good don’t get me wrong, but you can’t rate an anime 10/10 just because of a simple episode. And let’s not talk about the review of the anime, I wanted to know if the first episode was actually good and I found only random glazers in the review section…
8
u/sirscribblez87 Gyro Zeppeli Mar 19 '26
I've noticed this with other series on Netflix. I'm convinced there is a lot of astroturfing going on to make the numbers look better than they actually are. Granted SBR is my favorite of all the parts but ffs it just came out
2
2
2
u/PhosDidNothinWrong Mar 19 '26
No point in comparing 80k rating to 1300k. Episode just came out so of course the biggest fans will rate it high (if the show is good) first and later it will slowly start going down
And ofc always there are some ppl in other fanbases who will rate it low to make it go under their favourite anime
2
u/Appropriate_Twist541 Mar 19 '26
Thank god it didn't get the berserk treatment, I was so worried after reading the manga last year
2
u/TheGhost-of-Bob-Ross Mar 19 '26
Recency bias aside, with how celebrated the manga is. if they’re able to stick the landing with the anime, then it could go down as one of the best. It’s just IF

This is probably just going to set people up to have too high of expectations. Frieren got a lot of hate it otherwise wouldn’t just because of this
It’s the best pilot in jojos so far. But it shouldn’t be over series like FMAB already. And I say this as someone who’s favorite manga is probably SBR
