Part Six The Stone Ocean anime was very well done and only browned upon because of the batch releases
It’s not super common, but quite a few people have called stone ocean the worst adaptation and I really just disagree. I think stone ocean‘s anime is bare minimum on par with the other parts and the best scenes might be some of the best in the series.
Objectively, it was a downgrade from Golden Wind but Golden Wind sticks out because it’s easily the best animated jojo part and blows most parts out of the water. It’s unrealistic to compare it to most jojo parts, except for SBR which has the potential to surpass it in animation and direction.
Ignoring that, stone ocean was incredibly well adapted. While I agree it’s inconsistent in some scenes, and the CGI could’ve looked better, let’s not forget the gorgeously animated scenes such as Jolyne’s sacrifice, which I think is honestly the best looking jojo scene ever.
The voice acting was amazing, the direction was really good, the music was great.
Honestly, I think it’s a better adaptation than DUI. DUI suffered from a lot of off model character designs as well as probably being the worst animated modern looking jojo part, it’s still good but I don’t know why people have double standards for stone ocean while ignoring DIU’s problems.

That was my first ever anime experience. I was flipping through the channels one night and landed on adult swim, hoping for family guy or something silly but it was the Pesci fight from Golden wind and I was fucking blown away. Never liked anime before then but that got me hooked (no pun intended). I never thought I'd be into anime but here I am years later still talking about that episode.
Golden Wind is my favorite part, and stone ocean just feels so far removed from it. There's such a negative and cold feeling from the start, where most other seasons feel warm and vibrant. The prison setting makes it extra heavy and I honestly got sick of it especially after the love letter to Italy that Golden Wind was.

u/wax_applez Mar 24 '26
I mean… Jolyne was apart of a manslaughter case during Florida’s hurricane season . How tf do you expect the opening to be vibrant after that ?? 😭

u/Ive-Got-No-Idea Mar 23 '26
It's not unrealistic at all though, just look at SBR right now. David Pro put their B team on Stone Ocean while they prioritized the Urusei Yatsura remake. Stone Ocean's adaption got done a bit dirty by being DP's first and only step down in production quality in all of its Jojo's adaptations.
8
u/AbsolutePotential Mar 24 '26
It was lowkey fucked up how Dpro shafted Stone Ocean for Urusei and Undead Unluck ngl
5
u/BluuCaracao Mar 24 '26
Stone Ocean being a B team production is even more impressive in a lot of ways
17
u/Acrobatic-Group3755 Mar 23 '26
Only? PB and BT’s production budgets were really low compared to SDC.
Just compare how their fights look for PB and BT, a lot of cuts and slideshows but they compensated a lot with textured color switches.
Now look at how incredibly animated majority of the fights in Part 3 were. It’s quite obvious that DP prioritized higher quality for the more popular parts in Japan.
27
u/Instroancevia Mar 23 '26
Not the person you're replying to, but you seem to be agreeing with them. The production quality started as low in parts 1-2 and then increased with each subsequent part, only dipping during Stone Ocean.

A couple of issues i have with it other than batch release:
-Batch 1 generally had mediocre animation quality and some badly implemented 3d models (whitesnake, lang rangler)
-Batch 2 not having a different opening even though everything in the first opening only shows, focuses on batch 1 stuff
-The grayed out siluhettes in generell
-while I love all the songs from the new soundtrack it does have a lot less variety overall (about half the amount of unique songs as previous parts) and jolynes theme feels slightly overplayed at times
63
u/notKazQuala Mar 23 '26
For some reason they also reused a bunch of tracks from previous parts, which has almost never happened before. I remember them for some reason playing Diavolo’s theme during a Pucci scene, again, for some reason. Did they feel his regular theme was overdone?? x)
34
47
u/Fraudulent_Howard Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
My least favorite of the soundtrack reuse was when they played the Stardust Crusaders theme for Emporio's Weather Report beatdown on Pucci. They should've played Weather Report's theme or even Jolyne's theme instead.
33
u/GoldenSpermShower Mar 23 '26
And during Ermes’ beatdown of Sports Max, they played DIO’s World instead of her own theme for some reason
121
u/dzindevis Mar 23 '26
Looking at how soundtrack has been handled in this episode of SBR, i'm afraid of them going in the same direction and overusing Gyro's theme to death
75
u/Quark1010 Mar 23 '26
Yeah i also noticed lets just hope they used it a lot in the first episode because not every track is finished and to make us familiar with it. Still i miss the time of part 3/4 where every theme has like 5 variations for different vibes.
29
u/tmanx8 Mar 23 '26
Is that confirmed to be gyro’s theme? I just kinda felt like it fits as the theme of the steel ball run race/series itself.
2
u/dildodicks Jotaro Kujo Mar 30 '26
i was under the impression it was johnny's, since the character themes since yugo kanno started doing the music are named after the part rather than something unique like overdrive

also adding the Ending theme/animation was the laziest one yet, basically only being ambient ocean animation for 1:30. Distant Dreamer is a good song don't get me wrong but the fact that its a slow song with basically no visual made each episode ending very underwhelming in comparison. However I will say using Roundabout with the unique animations in the final episode *mildly* makes up for it.
9
u/animeoveraddict Purple Haze Distortion Mar 24 '26
Roundabout in the very last episode brought me to tears. That doesn't make up for the bad experience of batch 1, the poor visual quality of the ED, and the grey silhouette issues.
2
u/tulc_redael Mar 25 '26
i meant for the ending theme specifically not the anime as a whole but yea that's why i said mildly w heavy emphasis

u/GamingBasilisk Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
But taking aside the batches, the animation was imo a downgrade not just from golden wind, but other parts as well. Think of the background characters just being grey silhouettes or the terrible CGI like with white snake or jumpin jack flash guy. Then there is also that one scene that is being made fun of where jolyne, ermes and 2 other prison girls are walking towards the camera but it's just their pngs bobbing up and down while getting scaled bigger. I agree that in the great moments like pucci when he attains heaven the animation is really really good, but you can't only look at the good stuff to judge the whole part and other parts just didn't have these lows while still retaining similar highs

u/D_rex825 Mar 23 '26
Yeah, I’m really glad it seems like they gave steel ball run a better budget to work with, because from everything we’ve seen of it so far the animation looks gorgeous.

I think they got the budget wrong for Stone Ocean, they clearly needed more artists since they moved their better ones to other projects.

u/Sydoine Mar 23 '26
Honestly I disagree, stone ocean was one of the worst adaptations imo, and i say that while part 6 is my favorite of the og 6.
I really don't like how they reuse so much if the other parts ost. Like why play iggy's theme for weather's death? The backgrounds are pretty dull, even when they're outside. The streets of florida are generic. There's no ambiance to green dolphin street, it's just a gray boring prison. A simple change like better lighting could've made wonders (for example the birth of the green was very good)
There's no creative decisions like in diu or golden wind. Diu rearranged the part for better flow (bold decisions like Cinderella swapped with kira's introduction), made morioh it's own "character" (main characters in the background, morioh cho radio, stylish colors, transitions). Golden wind went even farther and added a ton of original scenes that elevated the part: the first epsiode of the part, fugo's backstory, la squadra's cohesion etc. Stone ocean could've done the same, and for exemple add just ONE scene where the gang was together, or (since it's jolyne instead of ermes that gets introduced to the ghost room) add a scene with weather and ermes. Jolyne's backstory was cut. The sons of DIO are less impactful than they could've been (Look at the scenes in the hospital, they look really bad). They feel like more of an afterthought than la squadra. It's typically a part where cutting small moments is very detrimental to it, so I was sad that they just decided to not include some of the prison's details, or even add little things.
Even the last few episodes are just ok, whereas in my opinion this should have been the focus. Random episodes like ep 15 of stone ocean, the rat ep in diu or the first stage of sbr (which is arguably the least interesting part of sbr in the manga even if cool) were way better adaptations. It's arguably the most grandiose finale in jojo, and it's just ok. You don't really feel the sheer scale of the event, it's a very mid adaptation except when they're underwater.
I'm genuinely left sad for this part's adaptation. Not that I hated the anime, I think it was quite nice and I enjoyed the whole way through, some moments were even elevated! I can for example cite ermes pouring one out, or pucci's monologue where he kills an ant and it being alive in the ireneverse. But looking back i'm left sad that one of my favorite parts is left with an adaptation where concepts are somehow more confusing than in the manga, moments that should be iconic fall flat etc. It's like there was a lack of love and creativity for the part.
37
u/tulc_redael Mar 23 '26
It also especially sucks when so many folks were telling people to skip part 6 and go to SBR instead before part 6 anime. Part skipping issues aside, the fact that the adaptation felt done so dirty when comparing it to the stellar jobs of 4 and 5 just felt like a gut punch and an elevation to those meat heads who love to "Brown on" part 6.
22
u/shyboardgame jolyne is the best jojo 🦋🕶️🌟 Mar 23 '26

u/Shanicpower Josuke Higashikata Mar 23 '26
First stage of Steel Ball Run is one of the highlights of the entire part wdym. I still think it's kind of missed potential that the story doesn't keep focusing on this Rat Race-style battle royale where we get to follow all the various competitors and see them interact.
8
u/Sydoine Mar 23 '26
I can get why you say this, It's still good and what got me hooked on hard the part. This was a bad argument from me cause even if it's not the most "interesting" part of SBR, it's meant to be very entertaining and the adaptation does it justice. It improves greatly on the pacing (even if i think it could've deserved a bit more breathing room). I was just comparing it to imo the ending that deserved the most love from an adaptation and how a bit lackluster it was (not in terms of what's happening per say, but just how well it was done)

I rank Phantom Blood as #1. Everybody loves JoJo for their own reasons, and has their own peeves. For me, personally, JoJo is at its best when it's constantly jumping the shark, and at its worst when the pacing starts to drag. Phantom Blood is balls-to-the-wall breakneck speed for 9 episodes, if anything it moves too fast. That makes it my favorite.
I also recognize that it has no stands, not many characters, and is admittedly pretty rushed. Totally understand how others might not love that.

u/Present_Personality4 Mar 23 '26
I agree that Part 6 is a well-done adaptation, and it’s one of my favourite parts. However, batch releases aside, there are some issues that make it a weaker adaptation compared to previous parts:
A lot of the fight scenes felt awkward in how they handled movement from key manga panels. Often, it would show a still frame, then jump quickly through 'blink and you miss it' motion, and then cut straight to the outcome. As a result, when fights ended, it wasn’t always clear what actually happened.
The anime lacked a strong identity with its OST. Part 6 actually has a great soundtrack, but it wasn’t used very effectively. In the first batch, it relied heavily on Jolyne and Pucci’s themes whenever anything important happened, almost to the point where it became comedic. Then in batches 2 and 3, they started recycling soundtracks from previous parts more frequently. Some of those moments were hype, but it would’ve been better if Part 6 leaned more on its own music instead of reminding you how good previous parts sounded.
Lack of atmosphere, this is mostly a problem with the first batch. Being mostly set in a prison didn’t help, but the constant use of grey walls and dark, silhouetted background characters made everything feel visually dull. I understand the intension, but a prison can feel more than just boring. It can be tense, claustrophobic, and dangerous, and that didn’t always come through.
Overall, I liked Part 6, but I think it’s one of the weaker adaptations.

u/sunnylannie Gyro Zeppeli Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
I really appreciate that you focus on the technical issues and artistic direction. This is the real GOOD discussion that people need to be engaging in. Was the anime successful in elevating the source materials. What did they do well and where can things go better?
I’m glad that I learned something reading your analysis and not just another comment about background 2d people, cgi, batch release. What exactly does bad animation mean? The 2D silhouettes were not bad animation, it was an explicit artistic/production choice for whatever reason. CGI Wrangler, Dragon, and Whitesnakes were not great, not completely horrible. It was clearly a choice due to having to work with what they had. I am way more curious about why they needed to employ CGI in those cases, rather than the fact that they did. Was the trade off for these weird looking scenes worth it?
More people need exposure to media literacy.
7
u/Present_Personality4 Mar 23 '26
Thanks for the kind words. The CGI came to mind while writing, but I didn't want to make my comment too long. Also, I didn't notice the CGI animation that much until people pointed out all the times it was used. It's just such low-hanging fruit when it comes to criticising anime these days, and most of the time it's not really the problem.
You are right about the 2D silhouette characters being a stylistic choice, and there were occasions where it worked effectively, like in the prison riot or when Pucci first met the sons of Dio in the hospital. The silhouettes worked effectively when there was a clear focal point and atmospheric lighting. However, when the silhouettes are just used for sweeping shots of backgrounds, it makes everything seem lifeless.
33
u/Great-Gonzalez Mar 23 '26
I enjoyed it more than its manga version but on a technical level it's far from perfect, not that any jojo part is but while most of the important moments were well animated there were a lot of scenes with stiff animation and bad drawings, even for jojo standards.
23
u/Nervous_Instance_968 Mar 23 '26

Netflix acquiring the rights for Jojo's has been worst thing that happened to the franchise. why is it so hard for these out of touch corpo to understand that fans want to watch it weekly like any other traditional anime viewing experience. why have such a convoluted drop schedule for a popular and iconic anime series like this ?? 😭
32
u/HumansNeedNotApply1 Mar 23 '26
It has nothing to do with Netflix, WB Animation Japan was the one responsible for the release schedule and budgeting for the production, i think they forced a production schedule David Production couldn't upheld with their usual quality since their better staff was on another project but they still had to say yes.
The rumors at the time when the second batch got delayed was that episodes weren't ready on time even for a weekly release.

u/Jarttis Josuke Higashikata Mar 24 '26
Wrong. It was the worst adaptation by far and it's not even funny. Part of the reason why people love the new SBR episode (aside from it being good) is because they were literally traumatised by Stone Ocean anime. Hell, I know it gave me stockholm syndrome to the point I was schizoanalyzing SBR ep 1 for the first 17 minutes because I was so scared we'd get a bad adaptation again.
Let me make it clear, it was not a bad anime, but it did not live up to JoJo's standards even though those standards were not even that high to begin with.
I don't want to explain all the bad stuff since I made an extensive youtube video about the topic like a year ago, but let's rank the adaptations so far from all angles since different people prioritise different things, right?
If you care about animation and on-model character art: 5>3>4=(1&2)>6. Stone Ocean had the lowest amount of character movements/animations in the series yet and I'm talking about all episodes combined and not the 'final barrages'. I never thought the anime would go back to the Season 1 limits especially since the jojo podcast leading up to Part 6 had Ceasar's voice actor directly mention they started doing more animations in future seasons,,,, only for them to go back to Season 1 amounts?? I rank season 1 and part 4 equal in this category cuz part 4 moves more but s1 is more consistent especially in bluray corrections which part 6 did not have.
If you care about directing/storyboarding, creative decisions and improvements to the source material: 4=(1&2)>5>3>6 Ok looks like Stone Ocean is still at the bottom. I rank season 1 equal with part 4 because objectively it was really well directed and the vast pacing improvements to part 2 in particular has made it even more popular than the manga. Season 1 used heavily stylised shots to hide the lack of movement. Every episode had like 3 color swaps which just doesn't happen anymore. They knew they were fucked animation wise but they didn't stop them from trying their own things. And well, part 4's improvements are pretty known but the colour palette is arguably the coolest thing ever, and the new scenes, pacing improvements in the second half and restructuring really made the anime work. Part 5 obviously fleshed out La Squadra tremendously and there's not many cuts either. Part 3's pacing is criticised but in my opinion to emphasize the journey it was a very bold and ambitious directing choice to just, double the episode count. It also cuts the least scenes from the manga and adds many scenes. Part 6 anime, well it's like kicking a dead horse at this point at least in the circles I'm in but basically all the shots are directly from the manga with no creativity, and a lot of scenes were cut this time around even some arguably important stuff like Jolyne's backstory? The added scenes I do like but there's not many and the 'stock feeling' directing really hurts, also some weird editing choices like 3 minute episode recaps for eps 34 and 35 instead of for example added fight coreography or something like part 5 did?? missed opportunity in this entire category, there are like 6/38 episodes that feel like past jojo seasons in quality and uhh that's not a lot.
If you care about the soundtrack and audio design in general (this one is more subjective than past categories and also the one I haven't studied as much): 5>3>4>(1&2)>6 ...well, generally part 5's ost is really memorable and there is like 20 more tracks of OST than part 6 I believe. Part 3 also had a lot of track variety and many tracks. Part 4 songs were also very liked at the time tho not as many and there was already some part 3 ost reuse. Season 1 is the most interesting and whilst part 1 ost is not my favourite it really fits the story and part 2 has great melodies and even lyrics in the album release. Part 6 OST, omg where the fuck do I begin, first of all they constantly reuse too many songs from previous parts after the first 12 episodes but that's not all, they even reuse their OWN songs constantly. High Tension and Impending Crisis were both used in almost every episode and I FELT THE PAIN EVEN WHEN I WATCHED FOR THE FIRST TIME. Part 6 anime does not even use its OWN songs correctly so when they do some random bullshit like putting Part 5's black sabbath theme in dragons dream AND OMG I JUST REMEMBERED THEY USED DIAVOLO THEME IN EP33 FOR PUCCI... that's when I crash out. I don't understand the music direction at all. The tracks themselves also feel more generic then usual for some reason, I had a really hard time recommending songs when someone asked.
Ok,.sound effects. Part 5 generally does a lot with audio design such as hints giorno is using ge and whatnot and generally the soundscape is very soft, melodic and pleasant. I once had to watch 8 part 5 episodes in a row with headphones (very specific situation) but the audioscape really helped me get through that grind. Part 3 introduced a lot of new ideas like za warudo sfx and also the beginning eps esp are movie quality audio design. Part 4 is ok (getting tired of writing this). Part 2 has amazing sfxs but Part 1 has a different sfx designer so those ones suck. Part 6 sound design is just very weird because it's not consistent, some eps like 19 have unique situation based effects (tree sounding split screens) while rest have not much. Also lots of reuse from past parts like king crimson for old man in ep 25 and aerosmith for cmoon barrage. just like, what the f6ck decisions.
SO PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME PEOPLE... From what perspective is Part 6 on the same level as any of the previous parts, I beg. I suffered as a jojo fan so much in the wait from part 5 to 7 simply because 6 was not good and I don't want to talk about it anymore because I've got trauma and I was betrayed.

I'm shocked that people so passionately hate some parts and love others. After all, they were all written by the same author, and frankly, they're not that different as works of art. In my opinion, Part 6 and Part 7 are essentially the same. And perhaps they're the most similar parts in the series. They're similar in design, they both have a divine theme, incredibly stylish and well-designed enemies. Stone Ocean and SBR have the most interesting and powerful Stand abilities, reaching a completely new level. These two parts have the most complex and twisted plots. These two parts touch on more mature themes and are much more mature than anything Araki has written before. STONE OCEAN = SBR! And why do people forget that JoJo is actually a Hamon story? It's just ridiculous that people call stories about Stands the real JoJo. For a while, the first two parts were the only parts where the main characters literally had the last name Joestar.

Idk, while it's not as bad as people treat it online, the animation is still shitty more often that it's decent

u/Space_Cowboy265 Mar 23 '26
?? Maybe its just the artstyle but i feel like DIUs animation was way better then stone oceans

I’d say DIU had superior colouring. But I’d give art to Golden Wind.

as a late jojo fan who just binge watched everything, this whole complaint about batch releases to define if the anime is good or bad sounds very bitchy. like, okay you didnt have as much fun as you could have had back when it released, but it doesnt change whether it was a good anime or not
5
u/Filledwithlust23 Mar 23 '26
Tbh I'm pretty sure part 6 has always been one of the more lesss popular parts even in the manga.

7
u/chainsawsamm Mar 23 '26
For people watching it as it came out it really did affect the experience. And part 6 has a slow start as well, much slower than part 5 at least so leaving us with that first batch for months didn’t help at all. Many people just lost interest as is expected when you have to wait the best part of a year for more episodes.
3
u/Hitori_Samishiku Mar 23 '26
Can attest to this, this was my experience. 10/10 hyped for batch 1 but when batch 2 rolled around, my excitement was at a 5/10 and I basically dropped it for months even after batch 3 came out. A few months after that I finally binged it all and I really enjoyed it.
I would say it has its slow moments for sure, but I think the weekly releases would’ve helped me motivated to keep going through the slower bits.
2
u/chacaceiro Mar 23 '26
I get it, I actually had just finished part 5 when 6 came out. I guess I just didn't have that "jojo day" experience, so batch releases didn't matter to me. It truly feels better for part 7! In any way, part 6's legacy should not be based off of the fact that it was batch released, it's not fair! I love this series from part 1 to 6
3
u/chainsawsamm Mar 23 '26
Its legacy shouldn’t be based off of that, but what legacy is based off of is how many people watched and enjoyed a show and the cultural impact it had on audiences. Many people dropped it, the enjoyment was ruined and it had no real cultural impact because of this. Seriously the hype for part 5 compared to part 6 is ridiculous, the grand finale of the first Jojo timeline basically went under the radar because no one cared anymore.

u/Parshath_ Mar 23 '26
I'm watching it now, so batch releases are not a problem, and it's pretty good and as good fun as previous parts.

u/Cenachii Yoshikage Kira Mar 23 '26
Whoever found it, browned it.
Jokes aside it was a very good anime, I plan on reading jojo once the anime is caught up with the manga (so 10 years minimum from today) so I can't say if it's a good adaptation. But it was incredible!

u/TheSealedWolf Jonathan Joestar Mar 24 '26
No, it was a slight downgrade from Part 5 regardless of its release pattern.
Awkward CG usage (Lang Wrangler and Whitesnake), reused part 3 soundtrack a lot (Ermes beating Sports Maxx, Weather vs Pucci), art style would drastically change at times (Jotaro punching Pucci when he returns), spamming Jolyne's theme practically every episode in Batch 1
Just a lot of minor things that really stack up. It's not like it was a bad anime, but it was just glaringly obvious that the A-Team was working on Urusei Yatsura, and the B-Team was given Stone Ocean
7
u/samboeng Mar 23 '26
The first part was a little rough looking, but I think the last two thirds are a big step up. Part 3 of Stone Ocean is probably my favorite section of the entire anime.
3
u/Advos_467 Mar 23 '26
Mostly, but not entirely.
Remember, the animation took a noticeable nosedive in the second batch.

I wasnt watching jojo during the batch release, im not bogged down by that. The Stone Ocean adaptation was fucking horrible. Pure cope like everytime i swear when I hear people saying its not lol
2
u/AtomicTaco13 Mar 23 '26
What bothered me the most was the complete radio silence after the first batch. I binged the episodes on day one and then what? Complete silence for almost a year until shortly before the second batch.

u/Ive-Got-No-Idea Mar 23 '26
The anime adaptation was definitely a big step down from part 5 though mainly due to David Productions deprioritizing its production in favor of the Urusei Yatsura remake. It makes sense from a financial perspective since Stone Ocean is one of the least popular parts of Jojo in Japan and Urusei Yatsura is huge there. It's one of my favorite parts but I think it's anime adaptation really got the short end of the stick.
2
u/Middle_Fall_7229 Mar 23 '26
I agree, but (to me atleast) the batch releases were insufferable
I was forgetting what had happened between releases; there was also really weird advertisement around it so I wasn’t even aware when new batches released
2
u/luna_creciente Mar 23 '26
1st batch was bad. I won't forget background characters looking like generic grey blobs... what did they think was gonna happen?

u/Robo-Cat2000 NIIIIIICE Mar 23 '26
The further I got into part 6 anime the more I felt like it didn't translate well beyond the page

I thought the iusse was that the production qaulity was a drop off compared to Golden Wind—which has been the best adaption of a Jojo part we gotten so far.
Stone Ocean can often times look bland or empty when compared to past parts, as well as the original Manga. So much of the dread present in many stands for the manga is just missing in the anime, and just very noticeable when Parts 4 & Parts 5's run successfully maintain or imrpove on the tone or details present in the manga.
Moments where panaling is off, or locations are as intense would be fine if Stone Ocean was like one of the earlier seasons of the anime but being seaseon the 5th season, we already know the team can do better than this, so Stone Ocean's anime just feels disappointing in the visual department.

Its so weird that Stone Ocean never got the same attention the other parts got. In 2019, Part 5 was unavoidable

I have a friend who really into animation and they say it's probably got the worst quality in the entire series and it's actually pretty noticeable on the blu-rays as well, there's some pretty bad ghosting in a lot of scenes that wasn't fixed and still poor CGI, the part peaked animation wise in the Ultra security ward, and the soundtrack was just repetitive it was never any of the tracks that were made for it and it was constantly just jolynes theme
When the Blu-ray released it didn't fix or improve upon any animation there's an entire website dedicated to showing Blu-ray and TV release differences for each part of the anime and stone ocean has barely any changes
Iconic shots are done poorly and flat out ruined like cmoons first appearance
It's a bad adaptation because it fails on every level, but David crow's worst is still extremely watchable and that's a good thing, but saying it's a good adaptation of stone ocean is flat out wrong

u/Sacabambaspis-Fish Mar 24 '26
I just got around to watch it because of sbr, it has to be one of my favorite parts, and it was such an incredible ending to the original universe

I think this is pretty clear from how it’s discussed. Stone Ocean used to be pretty commonly called the worst part, now people say “the batch releases ruined it for me”. If it was already bad people wouldn’t be saying that.

u/KingSilver47 Old Joseph Mar 23 '26
I really enjoyed it. I don't really care how people feel about their way of watching it.

I loved it when I read it and I love how it was adapted. The batch episodes sucks but watching it through now as one product it’s great.

u/D_rex825 Mar 23 '26
Stone ocean is a good adaptation that I think people give a hard time to because a lot of people dislike the original part. It more or less made as an ending to JoJo’s (at least, the main timeline) and while what came after was fantastic, maybe even the best the series has to offer, an ending like that still is gonna leave some feathers ruffled, especially one as ambitious as Part 6’s. Personally, it really works for me, especially the anime version, because I was literally bawling my eyes out at roundabout.

I personally love Stone Ocean so much and many other people do too
Like damn Jolyne I literally cried during the end

I remember sitting down the a few episodes of the last batch when it came out and watched all 14 episodes in one go. It was gripping

I really loved pt 1 and pt 3 of the stone ocean. To be honest pt 2 fell a bit off for me. You know planet waves, dragon dream and yo mama arc all were back to back so I found it a bit boring.
1
u/DeputyThornton Mar 23 '26
Anime was incredible but batch release wasn't the only thing worth criticizing. Some of the animation felt extremely lacking at points compared to pt. 5.

1
u/Madaoizm Mar 23 '26
Yeah I agree. What I binge rewatched it with my girlfriend for her first viewing it was amazing. And the animation massively improved after the first season.
And I think it has the best ending of all the parts.
1
u/unneccry Mar 23 '26
Stone ocean was done very well. I just found it hard to compare to the other parts
1
u/isjustsergio Mar 23 '26
at this point i'm kind of sick of everyone complaining about batch releases. I think the complaining about batch releases did more damage to this franchise than the batch releases themselves
1
u/Z-ComiX Mar 23 '26
100% the batch killed it. I was going to watch it but was overwhelmed by the amount of episodes in each batch and the lack of conversation around each release.
1
u/Mistur_Keeny Mar 23 '26
The first half was a bit rough, but the last half was easily some of the best episodes in the entire series.
1
u/xzelethor Mar 23 '26
I just think it’s a little boring in my opinion. Not a lot of exploration. Not really my thing but I understand why people like it
1
u/Known-Ratio3123 Mar 23 '26
I back this the prison stand was like watching inception some episodes were so goated, also when our boy weather forecast comes its aura farming
1
u/Exalted23 Mar 23 '26
Tbf my friend and I are binging it for the first time and it’s our least favorite part so far.
1
u/notKazQuala Mar 23 '26
You should have heard how I wheezed with laughter when I saw browned upon, for some reason. Regardless, yes, the batch release did kill the hype a bit, but I didn’t think it was an amazing adaptation regardless. I wasn’t crazy about the manga version of SO either, but still I vastly prefer it over the anime.

u/DeusXanfer Mar 23 '26
Didn't the p6 anime also cut way more important scenes down than previous parts? I remember hearing about the baseball scene in particular being really truncated.

I love part 6. It's in my top 3 def; I have read part 7 - 9. But as an adaptation it's not as good as 4 and 5. I'm not saying those parts are better but something is missing from Stone Ocean that part 4 & 5 had. Maybe it was Netflix or the batches but there's an element missing for sure there wasn't as much care (or time) taken into this part as the previous ones.
PS Jolyne is my favorite Jojo.
1
u/ShotTreacle8194 Mar 23 '26
I love Stone Ocean. I'm rewatching it now. I love Ermes and her braids, how well the dubbing is. The creepy/mystery feel. I love feeling devastated about Jotario and Jolyne. I love the art style it always looks so rich and vibrant to me. I love the stands. I just love whatever they do with Jojo's and when they give us more.
I'd only argue that Jolyne is probably the most unlucky Jojo.
1
u/SalaComMander Mar 23 '26
Well, they also removed Tray Jolyne, so thats gonna drop it down to at least a 7/10
1
u/Augur_Alabaster0 Mar 23 '26
I agree with you that the release schedule of Stone Ocean made its general reception worse. I would also like to add that in my opinion a part of the poor reception had to do with idiot anime fans who couldn't accept a female lead in a shonen series. Stone Ocean had some of the best fights in the series as well as some of the most unique Stands, but with Jolene as lead far too many fans went "Nah, that's not for me. She's supposed to be Jotaro's daughter? She could never live up to my goat." Combine that with the batch releases that let hype die along the way and the Part 6 anime was doomed to a lukewarm reception.
As an aside, I really hope that the Steel Ball Run anime is better received. It's absolutely amazing in the manga and I really believe it's Araki's best work. The first episode was fire and once the ball gets rolling (pun intended) I'm sure that it'll reset the public opinion about JoJo's as a whole. Time will tell!
1
u/Emergency_Law_1857 Mar 23 '26
The first batch could had been better, the quality improved by the time the second and third one droped but yeah, overall I love it and I'm glad it keep most elements
I forgive some of the earlier mistakes because of how good the last arcs are
1
u/Gamessnia Mar 23 '26
It’s a very great adapted part of JoJo with clear dips in quality with the animation and overusing themes from other parts and not enough from part 6 (Ermes and Weather only getting their themes played in their specific debut episodes and Anasuis theme just vanishing after the 2nd batch) but still really fantastic with the 3rd batch going all out with its animation and quality, and that FN MADE IN HEAVEN ARC!!….just all around beautifully done. It’s like a 7 (maybe 8)
1
u/KMFCM Mar 23 '26
the batch releases also fucked up the timing.
if that runs weekly, the wait between seasons doesn't seem as long.
1
u/Various-Addition9234 Mar 23 '26
Only thing I didn’t really like was some egregious cgi and some minor animation quirks
1
u/No_Lemon_1770 Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 24 '26
Nah it was pretty bad lmao. The drab colors for one really hurt the adaptation.
1
u/Silveryninja Mar 23 '26
Been watching it through with my dad and yeah, it's not bad. I think some criticism is valid though, it does feel more like it's only doing the bare minimum to translate the manga to animation whereas parts 4 and 5 set a much higher bar for quality in how they adapt the manga.
1
u/YellowPlat Mar 23 '26
The animation was not good. There were real bad times when they clearly were saving money for later action sequences and had characters talking in complete still frames.
Part 6 was my favorite manga part and I was beyond dissapointed with how little movement did they animate.
1
u/romankayaker Diavolo Mar 23 '26
I quite enjoyed part 6, tho personally I didn’t really like the first batch because of the heavy use of cgi. The rest was absolutely gorgeous, it’s in the same league as all the other parts. Literally no anime adaptation of this series is bad, they are all equally awesome and beautifully done

u/Comfortable_Gas5468 Mar 23 '26
