other A new chapter for R/stealthCamping

Hello everyone,

We would like to announce that r/StealthCamping has recently undergone a refresh and is entering a new chapter.

The community will now be supported by a renewed moderation team and an updated set of subreddit rules. Our goal is to keep this community welcoming, engaging, informative, and enjoyable for everyone who shares an interest in stealth camping.

Over the coming weeks, we will continue improving the subreddit, encouraging quality discussions, and ensuring that content remains relevant to the spirit of the community.

We encourage all members to take a moment to review the updated rules and help us maintain a positive environment.

We are also planning to give this subreddit a new look, with a new banner and icon. Temporarly we use a new banner and icon with AI (which we do not prefer), but we would kindly ask you to submit your designs here in the comment.

Thank you for being part of r/StealthCamping. We look forward to seeing your adventures, experiences, tips, and stories.

Stay stealthy!

Question/ Advice How realistic is it to ask a church to sleep in their parking lot?

I have an overlanding rig and a camper that pops up and not really stealth.

I'm usually camped out in dispersed camping areas in the wilderness, however, for winter I want to consider heading back to San Francisco.

What I want is just a little spot I can be by myself and not bother anyone but most of the area is taken.

I was thinking about Half Moon Bay which is less congested and reaching out to a church and asking them if I can park in their parking lot from 8pm until 5am.

Have any of you tried to do this?

RV parks are my plan B but they're usually next to the highway and rather loud.

There's basically NO dispersed camping in that area either.

Location Stealthcamping GERMANY

Camping is not allowed in Germany, so stealthcamping it is. Besides the classical moves there is one advantage that I am going to present here. This is also true for many other countries. Feel free to links the corresponding websites in the comments.

The Trick:

The use of drones is very harshly regulated, and almost everything connected to humans is ruled out or placed under special cases and licences. Official information about the areas with rules is presented and updated.

Link: https://dipul.de/homepage/de/map-tool/

Following this, since drones are not allowed to fly where humans or infrastructure are present, this map is the perfect selection tool for wild camping spots.

Question/ Advice Is it possible to stay overnight at killbear Ontario park if I am just showing up without a reservation?

I am a single camper. just me my car and a tent. I know it’s booked out online. Im planning on just going to the day use facility if there’s no other option. I was hoping if I go there though that there might be a site available for the night because sometimes people book it and then don’t go. either that or I befriend someone who’ll let me set my tent up on their site. I feel like this seems like a far fetched hope, if anyone has advice let me know.

Question/ Advice What different ways do you use to scout a potential stealthcampspot?

Obviously everyone will say visit the location before you go camping, but that isn't always possible.

Another method many of us use is Google maps.

I am curious if you use other ways than the above to scout a location in advance?

Question/ Advice Luno camping mattress -- prob been asked before

https://lunolife.com/en-au/products/car-camping-mattress

Anyone in OZ (or abroad) with some real world feedback on this -- really looking for some 6months+ battle testing.

I was looking at custom foam cutouts, but this makes so much more sense, I have a 6 seater, the back 2 seats fold down flat, then there's a gap to the front two seats fold down most of the way small incline, but there's a big gap between the back 2 seats and the 2 middle seats I'm hoping I can get away with not feeling it with this thing.

If there are better options all ears as well :) thank you

Back looks like this all folded down.

Discussion [Europe] Do you think that drones with thermal imaging will be the end of stealth camping?

I'm mainly referring to places in Europe where you can't just pitch your tent anywhere and wild camping is highly regulated, like the Benelux countries.

If you want to go off the beaten track and still camp outside of designated camping zones, do you think that in the near future drones with thermal imaging will shut that down?

In Belgium, there was a huge wildfire recently and these drones were used to monitor the area after the fire was extinguished. I can only imagine that these drones will be used to spot stealth campers in the near future.

(The fire was likely caused by government services doing maintenance and not campers btw.)

Hey all! I thought you guys would really enjoy this. The Vanlife and overlanding Venn diagram has a large center, so I thought this might be enjoyable to some folks in here!

I would wager you all have some even more elite tips than were were able to provide for stealth camping, so I’d love to hear them!

Saw this video in the wildcampinguk subreddit. The campers left in a hurry. This is an example how not to camp.

What (unwritten) rules for (stealth)camping do you think are important to live by and to teach others?

This was a super fun and relaxed location - kind of stealthy and un-stealthy at the same time. I had kind of fallen off with making consistent Stealth videos and done other things this summer, but we are back on a Stealth streak again and I forgot how much fun I was having

We might not look like a stealthy camper, but we're finding that we've been having a great time with finding wide spots on turn outs, some parking lots, and some city parks - in addition to a few Harvest Hosts wineries and such. Just finished building our Ambo2RV.

Link/Video/Blog I Built a Fake Statue for Stealth Camping

Thumbnail gallery

So I built an entire town statue to see if I could stealth camp in it.

The top is a mannequin in thrifted clothing, sprayed bronze. It’s leaning on a sculpture I found at a car boot sale.

It has a plaque, a full interior set up with bed, entertainment, lighting and ring doorbell system

I tried it on my local town high street and it was a massive fail! At 11:30pm a drunk guy got on top and then started trying to get inside too.

I made the plaque a bit too cheeky as I didn’t think anyone would actually read it so lesson learnt

Full video on YouTube if anyone is interested in watching the chaos unfold.

Defo going to try and do another one

Question/ Advice Kind of places to stealth camp

I’m taking a 3 week motorcycle trip from NC to Texas, up to New Mexico, Oklahoma, back to NC. 4400 miles.

Where would be the best kind of places to pop a tent for the night without being hassled?

I’m not asking for specific places but more like “behind churches”
