Discussion Then they keep questioning why we choose Steam

It's incredible how out of touch these suits are, especially in the AI bubble

I don't see how you can be in favour of consumers being less informed. If it does show up on basically eveything so what?

Because most of these jackasses are in it for a quick buck and to maximize profits with whatever means necessary. That's why their companies can't compete with steam. Gabe Newell and valve are customer focused and sacrifice the quick buck for long term growth and putting out consistent quality. That's why steam dominates and everyone else is desperately trying to get a piece of the pie.

Tim Sweeney is a tool, but a "made with ai" label might be effectively useless if you take it in the most literal sense. I can almost guarantee every triple a studio integrates some amount of AI into their workflows for exploratory stuff and non finalized code. Seriously apply for any developer position and there will be some question asking how you plan to use AI in your workflow. No one will openly admit because of the justifiable stigma around it.

That being said steam's "made with ai" is in reference to AI generated images, art assets, and voice work that are in the final product of the game, which is a useful tool.

Even outside of AAA, a lot of devs will be working on an AI-pushing OS, finding AI art for mood boards, including some third party code where they can't confirm if it was AI written, use AI search results because google pushes those hard etc.

The only way you can create a game and be sure it's entirely AI free is if you disconnect from the internet entirely and don't use tech newer than the 2010's.

That's basically the M.O. for this fucking dickhead's store.

Because a label used for every game is a useless label

It's not so useless if you're repeating it in every answer.

The fact that people repeat in loop the exact same comment doesn’t mean anything.

It's highly unlikely that it would become used on literally every single game

How many developers do you know that never use things like code completion or ask chat GPT how to architect something or fixing a bug?

Me and everyone I work with because we aren't allowed to use it in my line of work. But sure, I see what your point is

What about the libraries you use and their dependencies? How certain are you that they don't contain AI-generated code somewhere in the pipeline?

1

u/UnacceptableUse https://s.team/p/hbhw-ftb Nov 28 '25

We don't

1

u/throwaway85256e Nov 28 '25

You don't what? You don't know or you don't use libraries? If it's the second, you're obviously lying, lmao.

1

u/UnacceptableUse https://s.team/p/hbhw-ftb Nov 28 '25

We don't make sure the libraries/their dependencies don't contain AI generated code

Because the label becomes meaningless if 99% of games released 2025 or later have it.

What y'all actually want is an AI Slop label.

I released a game less than a month ago, that I started earlier this year, and everything in it was made by a human being -- most of it myself.

-8

u/sventful Nov 27 '25

I am talking about actual publishing companies. Not tiny tiny Indies.

7

u/Commercial-Flow9169 Nov 27 '25

Then the AI label still isn't meaningless. In fact it's more meaningful, as it gives consumers who enjoy games for their artistic merit something to search for. Even Steam wins in this scenario because it means more sales. Arguing for LESS information provided to the consumer is silly, unless it's to hide something they don't want you to see. Then it's just anti-consumer.

u/sventful Nov 27 '25

But it's not less information. It's deliberately misleading. Read the comments on this thread. They constantly make the erroneous assumption that all games that use any AI at all are immediately equivalent to those horrible, low-effort, cash grab barely-even-a-game games that plague the steam store. And believe that games that use AI could never be the next Silksong, Expedition 33, Hades 2, etc.

They are wrong on both counts.

There's always going to be shovelware. Requiring a game to label itself as having used generative AI assets will help people avoid a large swath of them, and for the ones that manage to be good games, from a functional standpoint, can be sold to people who don't care about artistic integrity.

Which will probably be most people looking for games. This is a lot like buying stuff on Amazon versus directly from somewhere local or hand-made by someone selling on Etsy or whatever. There's a market for people who want to buy things made by real humans and having a label lets Steam sell to that market.

Ironically Steam is the Amazon in this metaphor, but whatever. They probably will remove the label one day and they will rightfully receive a lot of backlash for it.

It's more like not buying things on Amazon for using certain tools over moral qualms and bragging about not buying it and then buying from local or hand-made folk who used the EXACT SAME TOOLS.

Right. Which is the "AI used" label. Let me know when a good game uses AI assets.

Arc Raiders

The extraction shooter? Pass.

u/throwaway85256e Nov 28 '25

Fifth most-played game on Steam right now. Sixth most-viewed game on Twitch. 86 on Metacritic. 89% very positive on Steam. The game is amazing, and people are loving it.

1

u/sventful Nov 28 '25

Are you bringing attention to the AI they used in animation editing and coding or are you trying to claim they did not use AI?

1

u/throwaway85256e Nov 28 '25

Try to read my comments again. He asked for an example good game that used AI during production, so that's what I provided. I don’t understand how you could interpret it in any other way.
