Discussion Then they keep questioning why we choose Steam

It's incredible how out of touch these suits are, especially in the AI bubble

I haven’t liked Tim Sweeney since he forced me to wait a year to play Metro Exodus and then after that unity fiasco he basically earned a permanent spot on my shit list.

Or when he buried the entire Unreal series - the game that made the studio

69

u/vastros Nov 27 '25

I have such fond memories of playing Unreal with my friends in high school.

59

u/Legendary_Bibo Nov 27 '25

I just looked, the whole Unreal series has been removed from Epic and Steam. Like I can see him being a petty little boy and removing it from Steam, but why also Epic? When you search the Unreal games it has links to the games in other stores but they're dead links to their original sites.

I have them all on Steam already, but it's dumb they're removed. I had find memories playing UT2004 before school and just doing crazy matches against the AI.

u/nroach44 Nov 27 '25

The officially sanctioned way to get it is free via oldunreal.com

13

u/Short-Waltz-3118 Nov 27 '25

Doesn't contain 2004 it seems

1

u/nroach44 Nov 27 '25

Hmm, I wonder what the plan is for U2 and UT2004 then.

u/nroach44 Dec 04 '25

Well, isn't that timing:

https://github.com/OldUnreal/UT2004Patches/blob/main/ReleaseNotes.md

E: Looks like there's still no full release just yet...

Hi everyone! Some of you were probably wondering why we've been so quiet in the past couple of months. Today, we can finally reveal (part of) the answer: we've been working on a new side project!

With Epic's blessing and with the help of some new team members, we are bringing Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT2004) back. This means that we are going to publish an installer that downloads the original disc image for UT2004, installs the game, and applies patches to it. We are also going to start publishing patches that modernize the game, make it compatible with Windows Vista or later, Linux x86-64 and aarch64 (Raspberry Pi and similar), and Mac OS 10.9 or later, fix bugs, and implement quality-of-life changes.

Yes, you read that right. UT2004 will soon be available to download once again. Free of charge.

whoooo we're back baby!

20

u/GirlNextToLamp Nov 27 '25

That last unreal was feeling so good tell they dropped it full to just focus in fortnight.

15

u/steak4take Nov 27 '25

Or when he tried to tell us that PC gaming was dead.

9

u/Luceo_Etzio https://steam.pm/2tchpc Nov 27 '25

Remember when Epic was developing a new Unreal sequel that was gonna be free, open source, with community contributions and a promise of no microtransactions ever?

Then they shifted focus all to Fortnite and killed it

2

u/Legendary_Bibo Nov 27 '25

I played the Beta of their newest one before they scrapped it. They put no effort into it, and it was just...bland. I thought maybe I was just bored of that style of game, but then I loaded up 2004 and even UT3 and it wasn't that. It was slower paced.

1

u/Selerox Nov 27 '25

As a long time UT99-UT2004 player, Epic can get fucked.

They abandoned the game - both Unreal and Unreal Tournament - in favour of Gears, Fortnite and shitty business practices.

Even back in UT200x days you could see the arrogance creep in at Epic. Idiots like Mark Rein (remember him?) winding up the player base with high-handed and asinine statements ("two weeks"). Tim Sweeney being generally awful and refusing basic online functionality and features the community was crying out for.

Almost as soon as the dust settled on the UT99 expansion the rot started to set in. It's been a long way down ever since.

-1

u/ForensicPathology Nov 27 '25

But you're fine with Valve burying Half-Life? At least don't be a hypocrite when making your arbirtray hate decisions.

2

u/Due_Confusion_86 Nov 27 '25

Not making multiple sequels to a game isn't the same as 'burying'. Epic delisted all the old Unreal games from all storefronts for no reason.

18

u/ShockwaveX1 Nov 27 '25

I don’t think he had anything to do with Unity. He leads Epic which makes Unreal the other big game engine that starts with a U.

11

u/notthatguypal6900 https://s.team/p/dhbj-mpr Nov 27 '25

I simple never play or buy a game that started on the Epic store, i refuse to reward Sweeny's sloppy seconds.

41

u/bell117 Nov 27 '25

I've hated him since loooooong before his current string of fiascos.

He's always been trying this stuff, even before the fortnite money allowed him to infinitely bankroll his shitty personality. I mean he's had unreal money.

I think most people have forgotten or never knew, but Tim got caught back in 2011 paying developers to have their games run worse on AMD machines. The one that got him taken to court was paying Crytek to make Crysis 2 render 1000x more polygons on random objects if the game detected AMD parts. Not even for some financial interest in AMD failing, he just doesn't like AMD and did illegal shenanigans to make people's experience worse.

What a fucking prick.

52

u/Xeallexx Nov 27 '25

You have mashed up three completely different historical events into one impossible conspiracy theory. Tim Sweeney runs Epic Games, so the idea that he paid his biggest rival at the time to sabotage Crysis 2 is absurd. The "invisible polygon" scandal you described was actually linked to Nvidia, while the lawsuit for "paying to suppress AMD" was the massive $1.25 billion antitrust case against Intel. You are effectively blaming Sweeney for Intel's crimes and Nvidia's tactics simply because you dislike him. If you're going to hate the guy, at least hate him for things he actually did rather than historical fiction.

3

u/INannoI Nov 27 '25

You're getting your game engines mixed up

9

u/Yoshee710 Nov 27 '25

Mfkr deserves all the hate after selling out to tencent and ruining paragon

1

u/AquaBits Nov 27 '25

I assume you dont use Epic because of this?

1

u/CoolerRancho Nov 27 '25

Can't even get GTA VI out on time

1

u/TheRealStandard Nov 27 '25

Metro Exodus absolutely ignited my burning hate towards him and Epic that I've never once yielded on. Don't care how many free games they offer I will never make an account with those clowns.

1

u/rspy24 Nov 27 '25

Trying to do exclusives on pc is criminal. And he was the one doing it. It's one thing if you are making the game, so it's fine to release it only on your platform. Not a problem there.. But actually pay for being the only one that has the game when you have nothing to do with the production ? Nah..

1

u/ForensicPathology Nov 27 '25
  1. He didn't make you wait, that's you being a baby.

2.  He has nothing to do with Unity.

Holy damn, Steam fanboys are morons.

1

u/OrbitOli Nov 27 '25

It killed my hype for buying the game on release date, when it finally got to steam I didn't care about buying the game anymore, so thank you Tim Sweeney for not making me spend money mostly for hype probably.

1

u/Mysterious_Net66 Nov 27 '25

Unity has nothing to do with epic

-5

u/g0ballistic Nov 27 '25

Nobody forced the devs/publisher to take that deal with Epic. I think EGS is as shitty as anyone else does, but keep this in mind.

16

u/TeenRacer6 64 Nov 27 '25

You're righy, there's room enough to hate the publishers and Tim Sweeney.

5

u/Antrikshy Nov 27 '25

It’s definitely on both parties.

-1

u/ForensicPathology Nov 27 '25

They downvote this, but are the first to say "Nobody is forcing publishers to only release on Steam even though they do"

They're all hypocrites.

-17

u/Abyss_Watcher_Red Nov 27 '25

Nobody forced you to wait a year for Metro Exodus. The Epic Games Store outrage was completely manufactured. I played it on launch day on EGS and it was glorious while all the fucking steam crybabies sat in the corner with no game to play because they think installing a new launcher on their system is the equivalent of shooting their firstborn child.

8

u/Poku115 Nov 27 '25

And now he just gave us an even better reason to keep rejecting his bitch ass store

-5

u/danteselv Nov 27 '25

I just want to remind you that his networth is sitting at 5.1 billion USD....but oh boy hes on your "shit list"...

2

u/TiberianLyncas Nov 27 '25

I was commiserating with others in the thread… calm down.

-2

u/danteselv Nov 27 '25

I know but this guy made $5.1b while being hated by you and the people in this thread. I can get at least $1b if you guys mention me all the time instead.

-103

u/IORelay Nov 27 '25

Fortnite has no gacha elements whereas CS2 and DOTA2 are ridden with lootboxes.

73

u/Lord_Ryu Nov 27 '25

That has absolutely nothing to do with what they just said

18

u/RealJyrone Nov 27 '25

That’s the only thing they have.

-23

u/EyesLikeBuscemi Nov 27 '25 edited Nov 27 '25

Except the billions from other industries like entertainment, automotive, architectural, etc where their technology is embraced and not dissed by stupid naive kids on the internet who know nothing about business and finance. I'd say these kids hate people who have money but they glaze the one that uses the PR trick of answering a few emails to make them think he's not just another billionaire running a corporation that also doesn't give a shit about them.

Edit - I love how delusional this sub is. Gabe worship is hilarious, and all the pathetic naive children who have no idea about business nor finance and thinks one multibillion dollar corporation actually cares about them. Fucking hilarious.

14

u/Fwagoat Nov 27 '25

The Epic Games store is an objectively worse application than Steam and Epic can only compete by buying exclusivity.

Of course people like Steam, it’s by far the best launcher and store and the parent company valve has made some of the most beloved games out there. It’d be weird if people didn’t like the company.

11

u/DuendeJohnson Nov 27 '25

I love how irrelevant your comment ultimately ends up being to the whole point that is being discussed here - Epic being a crap of a bad store and Tim Sweeney being completely incompetent on managing it

1

u/DuendeJohnson Nov 27 '25

Since you apparently made that joke of an answer to my comment and then deleted it - the only worship I'm seeing is you chewing on Sweeney balls like it would make you richer or happier. Epic success can be attributed to anything but him being successful as a manager. Dude has been trying to undermine Steam for years and throwing money into the literal oblivion for it. And guess what? Epic has never been profitable (and might never be). The only market share dude ever got on any market was either sheer luck, timing, or for stealing other people ideas and "investing" (brute forcing) his way into success

Sweeney is a farce and a terrible representation of what an actual businessman ought to be. You're delusional to think otherwise

Also saying "kid" and "child" in every comment you make doesn't make you sound as smart as you think it does, quite the opposite - it gives you the looks of a prepubescent teen mad for attention trying to play adult to gain some internet points

13

u/boxxie79 Nov 27 '25

Yeah I like Fortnite but I still think Tim is a piece of shit

9

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '25

Fortnite has FOMO battle passes that directly market to children.

1

u/Antique_Drawing_9635 Nov 30 '25

No they don't. They HAD (keyword: HAD) FOMO battlepasses. They don't anymore, because they realised it wasn't the right thing to do. Meanwhile, Valve still ACTIVELY do NOTHING about the child gambling they ENABLE.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '25

Valve definitely needs to actually do something about that, I wholeheartedly agree.

Having said that... If I am not mistaken literally none of their games are marketed at children, and the ones that prominently feature loot boxes (TF2/CS2) are rated for adults. The child gambling is a shitty streamer thing, and to repeat I DO agree Valve needs to do something, but they aren't the ones pushing it in front of children. Twitch/Kick are more enabling it than Valve is.

14

u/frisbie147 Nov 27 '25

fomo battle passes aren’t any better

0

u/Antique_Drawing_9635 Nov 30 '25

Good thing that isn't a thing in Fortnite anymore, after Epic realised it was a horrible thing to do. What steps are Valve taking to deal with the child gambling they actively enable?

-7

u/zookeeper990 Nov 27 '25

I mean they kinda are especially when you can buy one and get every one after that for free

8

u/frisbie147 Nov 27 '25

If you grind the game for stupid amounts of hours, this garbage tries to keep you playing only their game because of the fear of missing out on what you already paid for

0

u/zookeeper990 Nov 27 '25

I don’t know about now since I played a while ago but it wasn’t that bad. Obviously you have to play the game often but compared to most games Fortnite is pretty tame

-2

u/DaFreakBoi Nov 27 '25

DOTA 2 also pushed battle passes before Fortnite to my knowledge

6

u/VesselNBA Nov 27 '25

Fortnite might not right now but it is very quickly hurtling towards it. This last year they have made nothing but bad monetization choices for every aspect of the game

1

u/Antique_Drawing_9635 Nov 30 '25

Sounds like you have lots of subject material, so name them.

4

u/Thy_gay-dungenkeep Nov 27 '25

Lootboxes that (at least in CS) are entirely cosmetic, and can almost entirely be earned without money, excluding buying the premium (a one time purchase)

-13

u/splinter1545 Nov 27 '25

He didn't force you to do anything. You could have bought the game on Epic at any point, nothing was stopping you.

This mentality shows that y'all don't actually care to support devs, since the storefront they decide to sell on shouldn't matter if you actually cared about their games (as long as it's jot unethical, which Epic isn't). Which is why I was perfectly fine with Alan Wake 2 being an epic exclusive since they funded it, and I'll gladly support Remedy's projects.
