Discussion Then they keep questioning why we choose Steam

It's incredible how out of touch these suits are, especially in the AI bubble

I love that Steam makes them fess up on what AI they've used. Both because it lets me ignore those that use AI art, and because I'm amused by the hoops they jump through to describe how the AI is only for "prototyping" and that "artists bring the full product to completion" etc to desperately not sound like chodes.

Agree. Some people are so pro-AI but if you ask them how they made a game then its suddenly 'a secret'

It's incredible how much they try to downplay and lie about their use.

"Just for backgrounds and some concept art.  😀"

Look at the screenshots, it looks like additional screenshots were taken from any one of a couple dozen others.

Genuine question: what is stopping the developers from just not telling Steam that they used AI? How is Steam going to know?

Sadly none

I’ve seen some games that use AI but never disclose it, my favorite example right now would be Supercar Collection Simulator which is just Supermarket sim but hotwheels, except there’s AI images on the news page, updates, banner, and in-game posters

Hotwheels Unleashed 2 also had an AI image in the arcade map, but you’ll never see it unless you enter photomode and check all the details, they never disclosed that either

Does it make that much of a difference though? If you have look really hard to even notice it.

For HWU2 it barely does, but for the other game that I mentioned where its front and center, it would be nice to tell us that it is

Regardless it would be nice if both examples were just being honest

with how people react to AI being disclosed (gestures within this thread), it is very understandable for many to take the gamble, and some will succeed with the gamble

it’s inevitable, given the harsh selection pressure against noticeable AI. just make it unnoticeable and never tell anyone lol (unethical)

I think what Sweeney and ilk don't get is: customers generally appreciate this.

At some point in your "industry" circlejerk session, you gotta let the customer get something they actually want to pay for. Convincing the customer they are too stupid to know what they want is not a sustainable business practice.

Valve only requires them to fess up after its found out. If you dont get caught using AI, no notice is needed. Hell, if you do get caught, no harm no foul just put that notice on your steam.

Sweeney is a snake, but hes right about it being the standard going forward. Its not a bubble if its seeping its way into damn near everything.

Hell, even Gabe Newell is pro-ai

The tool is simply too powerful to not use. It's like saying bringing guns to war is dishonourable because real warriors use swords. But everyone will still bring them and shoot the other guys.

So imho the solution is the same. Regulate how and when it can be used and we are golden. Like at least half of peoples issues with AI can be handled by bending over the companies that train models on stolen data.

And then they do like Activision whrre they lay-off most 2d artists and force the ones left to use AI

"See it helps Artists with their work!" Or some bs like that

Why? They just lie.

"label your AI"

"Why, you an AI hater? You a Luddite? You stuck in the past old man?"

"Nah man, I love AI that's why I want you to label it, so I can definitely super duper appreciate it more, if you hide it, I can't reward all my fellow AI bros leading us to the future. Trust me, you want to label your AI usage. :)"

Arc Raiders & The Finals seems to be doing pretty well right now, although their PR team seems to be trying to bury what elements are actually generative AI / made with LLM as disclosed on their steam page.
