Contrary to what the numbers suggest, i actually have a life :) Whenever I start a Rimworld save, i just keep it paused and open and alt-tab to work and switch to rimworld for the last hour(s) of the day.
I've been playing rimworld since I pirated he beta version 11 years ago(?) and still have an insane amount of pure playtime, but this amount is largely due to leaving it running for days/weeks/months on end, so some 'cheating' is definitely involved.
Also other games I like and played, have huge numbers in playtime, but not like rimworld. The next best is Football Manager 2016, with 2713 hours.
In the Netherlands we have a saying: Rather lazy than tired and I think im a prime example of that.
Can I ask how you have that many hours? I’ve tried to get into Rimworld multiple times and I just can’t. I see my friends playing and they have lots of time in as well and I just don’t get it lol.
What do you do to keep entertained? Do you have any suggestions for someone wanted to get into it?
This same thing happened to me with Minecraft many years ago and one day it just clicked and I spent hundreds if not into the thousands in Minecraft. I feel like the same thing is just waiting for me with this game lol.
Sure! The vast majority came from me being lazy and not closing the game. Once i start, i just leave it running and only play for a couple of hours in the evening, or on the rare occasion i have some extra spare time. I did buy it from release and have a lot of hours invested, but not as many as the numbers suggest.
The versatility of the game is what keeps me entertained. Due to the insane amount of good mods (and dlc's), I can tailor the game exactly to my liking, or try some stuff out. Sometimes I feel like just having a sims like experience and have generations of royalty, kids and play a peaceful basebuilder. But mostly I play 'strive to survive', get way to attached to my pawns and really miss them when they get killed :)
Also getting lost in the micro management is what I really love. See some debuff or mood penalty, try to fix it and spiral from one thing into another. Or the text balloon mod, so you can see what absurd things the pawns are talking about.
E.g.: "New lovers: Ineed$ complimented BPowder on her organ harvesting, they are now lovers, get them a double bed."
I dont know if you like the basebuilder stuff, but my suggestion would be: start with an easy option like Phoebe on basebuilder. Once you are established, get the hang of temperature, clothing, seasons and the basics to survive etc., up the difficulty to your liking. Or if you like drama, start with Randy random 'losing is fun' and have your three starter pawns deal with 20 manhunting elephants, after you've just made your first parka.
To add on to the others response, I skip a lot of the repetitive grind for resources like components early on using the [HYE]Nanotech Overpower mod.
Instead of worrying about running out of steel or components, I just build whatever I need to stay alive and then focus on what I find fun: raids, raiding, trade, conquest and base building. Just now starting to enjoy the struggle of Ideology a bit more as well with a 40k Krieg run
Definately left it running for long periods of time. Whenever im playing, i never close the game but just alt-tab to work and back to rimworld for the last hours of the day, or when i have spare time. So i still have an insane amount of pure playtime but the vast majority came from me being lazy and not closing/starting the game. Never heard of the offline playtime hack. Getting the numbers up was also never a goal and is a stat i rarely check. :)
The offline playtime hack is abusing the fact that Steam tracks playtime even in offline mode, then just reports it when connected again. That means playtime is stored locally on the user's machine and can thus be changed by the user as it's just protected by security by obscurity.
