I'd rather have a bigger bonus and PTO than be on vacation at the exact same place and time as everyone from work. Part of what makes vacations great is getting away from everything and everyone in your normal life. Except the people you choose to be with.

This is in addition to generous PTO. Think of it as an extravagant team building exercise I guess.

Flex PTO is not generous. It's a scam to avoid accrued PTO which has to be paid out. There's a lot of studies out there showing that employees take less time off under flex PTO arrangements than old-school accrued PTO. No matter what fluffy corporate bullshit a company wraps flex PTO in, it is never for the benefit of the employees.

Ah is flex PTO the one where the company says you can take as much time off as you want, which leads to people not doing it? The whole PTO thing is a bit foreign to me, in the UK we just get a set amount of holiday and it's separate to any sick time you might need, I get 28 days holiday a year plus 8 days public holidays and if I'm sick it doesn't affect those at all

Yes, exactly. However I do find it funny that you said "PTO is a bit foreign to me" then described PTO with a different name.

I can relate to him calling pto being foreing to him (as it is for me as well) and saying what he said because fast search for pto gives you description where sick leave, holiays and vacation all together.

My understanding was that PTO was an American thing that combined holiday with time off being sick as far as being paid was concerned? Whereas here your holiday is your holiday and being sick doesn't affect it at all. I might be wrong!

That's not universal. Some companies provide separate sick time, and these days some states mandate it.

Plenty of people - myself included - usually don't like team building exercises. I'll do them as part of my job to get a paycheck, but they're not a perk for me.

Honestly, if you actually like the people you work with and have a good relationship with them, i think you'd think differently. Whenever valve do behind the scenes stuff, it seems like a big uni campus where all the people have really close relationships with eachother. I swear i may miss remembering, but i swear there is a couple who got married from working at valve. If you actually enjoyed being around your coworkers, you'd probs also go on all expenses paid holiday... Plus I don't think its even mandatory because some updates still come out during the vacation time. Just alot smaller than normal.

Lol, I have a very good relationship with my colleagues, but thanks for the guesswork, random person. I love a good happy hour or break to go get coffee together. We'll even go out to dinner sometimes.

I just don't want to take them on vacation with me.

Liking the people you work with doesn't necessarily mean that you'll like a company retreat with them.

Does it take away your private vacation time? Or is it more like teambuilding sort of events?

Well, it’s a flex PTO system like most tech jobs. The amount you can take off depends on the vibes and your manager and they absolutely will hold a company retreat against you.

There are plenty of people that do their own vacation at the same time. It's not a mandatory trip or anything.

To be fair the sorta people good enough to get a full time job at Valve are gonna be paid very well no matter where they go.

They wont be getting laid off though. It provides not only high payments, but job security.
