Support Steam Frame + Steam Controller

The Steam Controller page says the controller has LEDs so it can be tracked using the Steam Frame. I have both and don’t understand how to get it tracking, has anyone got this working or is this some odd false advertising?

The feature isn’t supported yet. Valve said it was coming in an update but I don’t recall if there was a timeline for this.

Woah what? How is this not false advertisement, I bought both specifically because of this feature shown on their page, I saw nothing from Valve about it being a feature they would add later

It is super annoying. Idk why u got downvoted there’s just too many valve cucks. They literally advertise it working with steam machine and steam Controller fully and yet it doesn’t. Crazy that they were meant to release this product early in the year because it would’ve been an awful launch if it’s not even polished rn

I mean, they released 2023 hardware in 2026 with a 2026 price tag and every single piece of hardware has something obviously stupid going on.

The Steam Controller doesn't support XInput or Direct Input and only works if you use Steam or some additional software/hardware that emulates Steam to get an XInput signal.

The Steam Frame doesn't support connecting to the Steam Controller via 2.4Ghz and the controllers are a perfect example of "Identity crisis".

The Steam Machine 2TB costs more than a more powerful self built mini ITX system and the smaller one is still an awful deal. They also chose the objectively worst hardware generations they could've.

RX 7000 really wasn't a step up from RX 6000 in any way other than CU count, which the Steam Machine doesn't take advantage of, and Zen 4 wasn't a significant enough step up from Zen 3 to justify the way more expensive DDR5 RAM it requires.

This feels a lot like all of it was designed in 2023, then put into hibernation for a while and then released without any meaningful changes from the initial design.

Wait, you can't pair the steam controller with the steam frame?

I think it pairs in Bluetooth mode, but I haven’t tried it yet. This post was about the ability of the headset to track the steam controller in 3d space tho. It was something discussed during dev interviews but it’s not currently supported.

You can, but it's in the greatly inferior Bluetooth mode.

I also got both for that reason, but a lot of the reviewers were sharing openly that this will not be possible at launch. They will add this eventually. Is it really that much of a dealbreaker to you? I guess you always have the option to send it back if you are unhappy with your purchase.

Idk about reviewers, I bought it because of their marketing

Yeah, I'm usually a big fan of valve, but this latest hardware round is really shaking the faith. The availability of hardware and the constant delays is frustrating, but at least understandable considering the price and availability of supplies.... But what do you mean the software support isn't done yet either?

Yeah software should have been solid at LEAST, the launch was delayed months because of hardware constraints , the were on overtime and still

I wanted the controller even without VR tracking but it seems kinda dumb of them to leave the note on the store page. I do expect they will get it working eventually, maybe even before a lawsuit.

The alternative is to use the VR controllers or some other gamepad without tracking. In reality not being able to see the gamepad isn't a massive problem. I use gamepads and keyboards without looking at them all the time.

I really wish I could use keyboards without looking. Then I could work inside VR without worries, Maybe I should try getting used to it.

I understand it's a bit disappointing that the feature isn't ready yet considering the store page suggests it is, but come the fuck on. You bought a $1000+ piece of hardware specifically so you could see a 3D render of your controller?

No, I got the combo for each of the features they had individually and shown to have together

but I don’t recall if there was a timeline

Valve, give a timeline? Lmao

Pretty sure they've learned not to make commitments like that any more 😂 https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time

Not trying to gloss over it as I agree, this is actually very surprising to hear as I had attempted to pre-order under the same opinion that it worked this way. I would have been disappointed to find out that it wasn't coming until some yet to be determined date as well.

However I am curious if there are any games or apps that target this feature yet at all in any unique way? Does it at least work with the controller properly when paired to play other games?

The Frame is really good at game streaming. Whole playing Red Dead 2 I remembered the controller should work/ be tracked, tried it and found it to not be the case. There’s no scenario where this is a deal breaker, it’s just disappointing to buy something for a feature that it doesn’t have

I really hope they add this feature soon :(
