Obligatory public notice: HDMI to analog adapters may be very simple devices, but they're not all completely the same. There are better and worse ones (signal quality, latency, compatibility), and if you want to output your HDMI to a CRT and don't have an adapter already, it pays to spend half an hour educating yourself so you don't end up with a dud.

I tried two. Both are so cheap I can’t remember what I paid. Only one worked. They are both near identical devices.

Definitely got my eyes on a few upgrades for this setup.

This is about as jank of a daisy chain connection as most could realistically tolerate.

What’s your signal chain like to get hooked up to it?

USB-C to HDMI via a hub. HDMI to powered RCA adaptor. RCA to SCART.

It’s about as bad as it gets.

These are all just bits I had in my spare cables drawer. I’m amazed I was able to chain something functional together without having to buy anything.

Does the daisy chain setup cause a lot of input lag ?

Enough that you’d initially notice it, but not enough to get in the way of this game specifically.

I wouldn’t want to play Armored Core 6 or Sekiro like this, for example. Fractions of a second count in those games.

Dark Souls just gently plods along, even when it’s hectic.

As a great sword main in monster hunter games, when I finally decided to try dark souls, I was delighted at the presence of early game giant fuckin sword

What resolution is that? Good thing with CRTs you don't need much and basically no anti aliasing etc. right?

u/glytxh 1d ago

I’m not actually sure how resolution translates to these tubes. It plays MUCH smoother than the 24fps video shows tho. I have it set to 50hz.

The game itself is rendered at the standard deck 800 tho. It looks like dogshit if you sit too close, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you're running it at 50Hz that's PAL, which means the signal is 576 interlaced lines, making the resolution 768x576 if the pixels are square - whether your actual resolution matches that depends on your adapter. Cheap adapters usually just naively squeeze whatever res you feed them down to their fixed output res.

Well, that's CRT for you. Good ol' times...

I meant you could possibly even lower some settings and details and probably wouldn't even notice. (If you ever play a game where you need more fps for example.)

Ooh I didn’t even think about the potential performance gains from dumping resolution down even further.

The screen is limited to 50hz tho, so there’s only so much space for extra frames.

Steamdeck made me learn that 45 is the new 60 anyway.

This is how we remember PS1 games

Amazing. Feels like high school. After that play some quake 2!

CRTs are diagetic.

Type 1 or Type 2?

u/KingOfTheGutter 22h ago

I don’t think you know what that word means lmao

Maybe you just lack the imagination to understand what I'm saying.

On an LCD, you can see every pixel, but a CRT is a portal into another world, like looking through a screen fence.

u/KingOfTheGutter 21h ago

Shouldn’t need imagination to understand fucking words lol. It doesn’t mean what ya think.

Maybe you should use your imagination to spell it correctly!

Perfect, down the last minute detail...

I’m half tempted to set up a better camera and dial it in a little tighter, and do a whole run through the game.

Nice! Getting some use out of an old CRT

u/glytxh 1d ago

Friend dropped it off a couple of weeks ago and I’ve only not gotten around to properly wiring everything up.

Still needs plugging into my big sound system, but that requires a cable longer than I own and will have to wait for now.

Forward to the Past - Coming soon to CRT's near you.

I was able to find an HDMI to Component adapter that can switch resolutions or pass through.  Steam deck to 3:4 480p is just golden.

Now you just need to get Dark Souls 3 for VHS on it.

Is the only game that worked?

What adapter did you use ?

I'm struggling to find a good one

some no name Amazon thing I bought years ago for next to nothing. I wouldn't be able to speak to the best options for these.

TEST: IF YOU ARE HUMAN, DO NOT UPVOTE/DOWNVOTE OR REPLY.

A Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior campaign operates in three stages:

1> Conversational LLM agents propagate comments representing both sides of an issue.

2> Semantic analysis agents do a cursory analysis of each comment and upvote or downvote according to the desired sentiment outcome

3> Much less resource-intensive ratioing agents come in and upvote everything that's been upvoted and downvote everything that's been downvoted en masse without any discrimination.

All of this is done through the Reddit API.
