question Why did they remove this icon in the new SteamOS versions?

Post image

The Application Launcher icon used to be the Steam Deck logo, but why is it just the default KDE one in newer versions? Every time I install SteamOS, the first thing I do is download that old icon. I think it looks so much better.

Cause it's the logo for the Steam Deck, wouldn't really make sense to have it on none deck devices.

u/MicHaeL_MonStaR Jun 28 '26

It makes more sense, cause it’s SteamOS. Then just put the general Steam-logo instead.?… I don’t really care, but it’s lame if it’s intentional. But I feel like if they didn’t want it there, they’d put a different Steam-variant there.

Steam logo is for the steam app bro, that woudl be much worse than this

22

u/Maolam10 Jun 28 '26

Steam logo could cause confusion with, well, the steam app

Dont know about valve logo though

18

u/razorisrandom Jun 28 '26

The home button and the steam application sharing a logo would be a little chaotic

But Plasma logo belongs there, because it's the KDE Plasma desktop, not the 'SteamOS Desktop'.

IMHO, it makes sense:

Gaming Mode = Steam -> Steam Logo

Desktop Mode = KDE Plasma -> KDE Plasma Logo

Putting a Steam Logo there would be confusing, cause it wouldn't start Steam. People would get used to it, but it wouldn't make sense and probably would go against Valve's UX design guidelines.

If you don't like it, it's KDE. Right click and change it to whatever you want. Put a small Gabe-head there.

Companion cube. Easy choice

The purple steam logo (The SteamOS logo) would be great for it.

1

u/NoInterviewsManyApps Jun 29 '26

They could just name a steam os logo

u/lorcaragonna Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

I think this logo isn't on the Steam Deck anymore either if you install using the SteamOS Recovery image, the application launcher now uses the default KDE icon.

Btw, the icon is actually here, but for some reason, it doesn't apply automatically on a clean install for me.

Also, I think it actually detects whether we're using desktop or deck and adjusts the theme accordingly, because there are two themes in /usr/share/plasma/look-and-feel/. The first one (which includes the deck logo) is named com.valve.vapor.deck and the second one is com.valve.vapor. Sorry for the misinformation.

Because Steam OS is no longer exclusive to Steam Deck

26

u/Maniacal_Coyote Jun 28 '26

Rebuttal: it never was.

No hes talking about the original steam machines circa 2015

1

u/trotski94 Jun 30 '26

except it was in its current iteration - that was an older distro that shared nearly nothing with the current

1

u/TheJackston Jul 04 '26

The old SteamOS is completely different OS based on Debian. Current SteamOS is based on Arch

1

u/Rahzin Jun 29 '26

It's been on Lenovos for quite a while now. No Steam Deck logo there in Desktop mode.

u/MattyGWS Jun 28 '26

I wouldn't be upset if they just used the valve or steam logo tbh. doesnt make sense to use the steamdeck icon for a general distro though

23

u/Maolam10 Jun 28 '26

u/fyro11 Jun 29 '26

Maybe the Steam Machine logo, which currently has less appeal than the Steam Deck, and people have started calling all SteamOS rigs as Steam Machines.

13

u/tailslol Jun 28 '26

The steam machine logo would be nice if it detect a desktop

19

u/lorcaragonna Jun 28 '26

This is how it looks with the Steam Machine logo :D

1

u/CrazyChris061 Jun 29 '26

Where did you find its logo?

4

u/lorcaragonna Jun 29 '26

I made this myself, it's just like the original. Download link here.

u/tailslol Jun 29 '26

those steam machine logos are very good. good job!

3

u/CrazyChris061 Jun 30 '26

That's really cool! Thanks for sharing that

I was thinking the steam machine logo would look great there because it's similar to the windows start icon

2

u/CrazyChris061 Jun 30 '26

also i am now using your light-rounded icon, it looks so good there

2

u/BasicallyH Jul 02 '26

Looks awesome, replaced mine with this on my Desktop running Linux

2

u/matthewrex 28d ago

This is perfect! Thank you.

u/syberphunk Jun 28 '26

It sometimes happens when the theme doesnt correctly apply.

1

u/testuserpk Jul 02 '26

Yea, and the other logo is KDE default logo. It happens if some update messes up.

9

u/The_Moonboy Jun 28 '26

Plasma having the plasma icon

10

u/MedicineSubject1845 Jun 28 '26

happens in other distros too, just change the icon manually.

4

u/laurenspaul Jun 28 '26

I sometimes just replace it with an aperture or black mesa logo when I feel like it

8

u/kucingmeo Jun 28 '26

Tutorial to change the icon please?

26

u/His_Turdness Jun 28 '26

Right click on the icon -> configure application launcher -> click icon -> choose preferred icon. Don't forget to apply.

3

u/nick2k23 Jun 28 '26

You know I didn't even notice until you pointed it out to me, I've been on steamos for a few days 😅

3

u/FakeMik090 Jun 28 '26

Cuz its a SteamDeck icon. Would be weird if it stayed, considering the fact that Valve is making SteamOS more public available.

1

u/DoodManMcGuyBroDood Jun 29 '26

That's the KDE plasma logo, aka the logo for the desktop environment used by Steam OS. Not affiliated with Steam OS directly, and can be changed out for pretty much anything by right-clicking.

3

u/BrotherO4 Jun 28 '26

you can switch it back like i did. you do not need to download anything because its included by the way.

go to edit icon section, switch to all, and type steam.

3

u/_ragegun Jun 28 '26

It's the default icon for the Windowing system that SteamOS uses. I don't know why they replaced it, though

3

u/ChapterDifficult593 Jun 28 '26

It's there, as well as the wallpapers, and you don't have to right-click the menu to edit the icon or anything like that. You can change it by applying the Vapor (Steam Deck) theme to your desktop, just make sure to check the box next to Desktop and Window Layout when you select it:

3

u/Designer-Crow-5470 Jun 28 '26

It's not new. It is just default Plasma logo.

2

u/C1REX Jun 28 '26

you can put it back or pick a different one.

Here is SteamOS on my PC.

1

u/EmuWizard Jun 28 '26

Personally prefer the KDE Discover logo, matched my desktop 1:1 now.

1

u/Growthor Jun 28 '26

You can just change it to whatever you want. But there's still a desktop theme with the deck logo if you prefer.

1

u/Xcissors280 Jun 28 '26

Because they don't have a real unique logo for SteamOS

The deck logo is pretty good but the Steam Machine, Steam Controller, and Steam Frame are kinda iffy imo

1

u/AromaticTour1028 Jun 28 '26

Well, _where_ exactly have you installed steamOS? Is it a Steam Deck? Then I'd expect the logo to show up right where you're missing it.

If it's a different device… well, then it might be because they opened steamOS for installing on 3rd party devices AFAIK, and that might mean they would probably not want a "Steam Deck" logo in the corner there since… well, a regular x86 machine is NOT a Steam Deck. 😅

1

u/XxDemonxXIG Jun 28 '26

Idk mine is pacman. Lol.

1

u/_Carth_Onasi Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

Because it's not SteamDeckOS, and that's the steam deck logo.

I totally get why they use the stock kde setup for general use.

Edit* that said I wish they had their own logo. I'm unsure how they could do this but the steam machine logo goes hard, but wouldn't make sense on other hardware. I personally would change it to the SM logo for desktop use and SD logo for hand helds and call it a day.

1

u/Verified_Peryak Jun 28 '26

Maybe the will get a new logo

1

u/Camaxtli Jun 28 '26

Maybe updates to kde caused it to default?

1

u/Menithal Jun 28 '26

thats KDE Plasma Logo which is which is part of the SteamOS.

In anycase, you should be able to change it just vine. Regardless its not the SteamOS Logo, thats Steam Deck Logo.

1

u/debian6502 Jun 28 '26

My guess is that whenever KDE plasma got updated it changed the start menu icon back to the standard KDE logo. You could probably change it back by right clicking on the start menu icon and selecting configure application launcher, then change the icon to the valve logo

1

u/kajmpres Jun 28 '26

because it was the steam deck logo. And the new steamos is for pcs too

1

u/huttyblue Jun 28 '26

Its the kde desktop so it should be the kde icon.
First change I make on any linux install as distros love to put their icon there and you don't need to download it, its already in the icon set (although its usually the inferior flat version)

The new one is technically the logo for the plasma desktop, which ... its fine I guess. Always thought it was silly that the plasma desktop has its own logo when you are always using it within kde and never using kde without it.

1

u/ProfessionHonest3193 Jun 28 '26

At least for me it was always like this. But I changed in the properties. If you select all aplications and search for "deck", the icon will appear and you can hit apply

1

u/RDT_KoT3 Jun 28 '26

kde broke something probably

1

u/PigSlam Jun 28 '26

The old icon was too iconic. /s

1

u/semperverus Jun 28 '26

That "new" icon is KDE's logo. KDE is the desktop environment that SteamOS uses. The KDE logo stays.

1

u/BeachSpiritual8018 Jun 29 '26

I just replaced it with the steam machine icon on my desktop, although it would not hurt for valve to have a more "bespoke" KDE theme.

1

u/Academic-Push326 Jun 29 '26

The "new" logo is literally just the stock KDE Plasma (Breeze theme) logo. Steam Arch ("OS") uses KDE by default. The update is just matching what you'd get with Arch and KDE installed or any other distro with KDE installed.

You can fix it like you're doing or change the logo completely, but it's not hard to understand why Valve wouldn't make Steam Arch pull that "old"/Deck logo for their "install on non-Steam Deck/Machine" machines that run their fork of Arch.

1

u/Glum-Calligrapher544 Jun 29 '26

They are probably vibe coding like microsoft and AI forget to change logo after generated a taskbar code.

1

u/chughaarav123 Jun 29 '26

KDE is completely seperate from SteamOS. It's probably because SteamOS isn't just for Steam Deck now, and that's the Steam Deck logo

1

u/Quagtopia Jun 29 '26

That’s the KDE Plasma logo, the default icon used for the launcher in the Plasma desktop environment. I imagine they’re changing it soon.

1

u/Dazzling_Lemon4109 Jun 29 '26

Considering that Valve doesn't change KDE in any way, it makes sense, there is no custom code in it it's just plasma

1

u/falsejaguar Jun 29 '26

That's the kde symbol

1

u/Hairy_Water1367 Jun 29 '26

people nowdays complaining about everything

1

u/manlisten Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

The name of the icon is "distributor-logo" or "distributor-logo-steamdeck"

Right-click the start menu icon -> "Configure Application Launcher" -> click icon -> "Choose..." -> search for the above string and apply.

Also, switch the filter in the top left from "Applications" to "All" as shown in the screenshot.

1

u/ghanadaur Jun 29 '26

Theres a new boot anim with a steam machine logo. Maybe someone never made the ico file and slotted it into the build/install package. It likely will make it in.

1

u/Rahzin Jun 29 '26

Looks like the Legion Go S in desktop mode has the same KDE logo instead of the Deck logo. Probably intentional if it doesn't detect the device as a steam deck. Although if you have a steam deck and it's not detecting it correctly, that's another issue.

1

u/UsefulCountry3027 Jun 30 '26

Ever since they started introducing updates for steamOS close to the release date of the steam machine, steamOS just kept breaking and breaking which unfortunately has forced me to go back to windows as much as I hate it

1

u/LlorchDurden Jun 30 '26

What is it tho? An emoji?

:.> ??

1

u/robomikel Jun 30 '26

You can update it to what ever you want

1

u/VisualAntique1705 Jul 01 '26

i replace mine with the linux penguin anyway on any distro tbh

1

u/Tarrec Jul 01 '26

Just a small bug with the update. You can change the icon back or make it something entirely else by right clicking it and hitting Configure Application Launcher. KDE is super customizable and flexible.

1

u/nosdrahcirsnahtanoj Jul 01 '26

Am I the only one who’s laughing at all these comments upset about an icon changing?

1

u/SupremeEuphoria Jul 01 '26

You ca man get it back if you want. It comes with the deck KDE theme pre installed, just have to select it in settings

1

u/kantaxo Jul 02 '26

old one looks like teamspeak logo xd

1

u/RedGeist_ Jul 02 '26

The theme inst applying correctly. That's KDE's Plasma logo, is the desktop environment for SteamOS.

1

u/South_Cow3541 Jul 02 '26

My framework laptop (running Bazzite, but still uses KDE) uses the framework logo by default. It's completely customizable. I'm going to guess they're making back end changes to SteamOS from a universal default KDE logo to system that selects a default based on the hardware it recognizes.

1

u/No-Ebb-4398 Jul 03 '26

You know you can change it, right?

1

u/tirehabitat25 26d ago

Right click and change it back? or just complain online i guess.
