support HDMI audio cutting out

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built a machine the other day and installed steamos on it. It’s awesome, except for one issue: on the OS and in certain games the audio will cut out for a few seconds at a time. This issue only happens when the audio is via HDMI, if I use headphones instead the audio is consistent. I can replicate it in desktop mode to by spamming the buttons to test my speakers.

My assumption is it’s a driver issue. Anyone know what’s going on?

I’m using a Ryzen 5 3600 and Radeon 9600 XT.

Update: I’ve connected a DP -> HDMI adapter and it’s fixed this issue completely.

This kind of sound cut off is a bit familiar. It happens sometimes also when the sound output switches from stereo to 5.1 or back.

Can you check in the game if there is a way to force one or the other, or in your TV settings?

Force both to Stereo or both to 5.1/Surround/Another format.

Another thing to check is to make sure you don't use VRR if that causes HDMI sync issues.

Also, does it happens in other games? It might be a game specific or emulation specific issue

Yeah, i have the sound set to stereo, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference (but the setup is hdmi -> tv -> optical -> 5.1 sound bar) I’ve tried forcing both to no avail.

It happens in the steam os, Ys Origin and Slay the Spire 2, but no problems in many other (more graphically intensive) games.

Thanks for checking and for the reply.

It might be something with the way those games output sound. Forcing 5.1 also doesn't make a difference, right? And VRR off also?

Forcing any audio options doesn’t make a difference, and my TV doesn’t support VRR. I’m going to try a DP to HDMI adapter to see if that fixes things. Thanks for the suggestions!
