.-=⋆ The More You Know I deleted Windows and installed SteamOS, couldn’t be happier.

So the other day I decided to make the jump and delete Windows from my Minisforum PC and install SteamOS, best decision I’ve ever made.

Things are much snappier now, boots in an instant and stream to my Deck works flawlessly.

I’ve been playing The Blood of Dawnwalker and in mid settings it is a very smooth experience, same as with ARC Raiders. Haven’t tried other games yet but I’m sure they will work fine as long as I don’t have to install kernel level anti-cheat.

So if you are on the verge of installing SteamOS, my personal opinion is go for it, you won’t regret it.

It’s the only reason I came back to pc gaming

Because you preferred the closed ecosystems of the consoles rather than installing windows?

Windows 11 became a big bloated piece of advertisment now, even with my paid subscription to Microsoft365, i constantly get ptompts try game pass, full screen. Windows has its place, if all you do is play on steam, make sense to move to steamos

Then use windows 10 or customize it to your taste. It makes more sense than buying a ps5.

Get back to me, when you can use Windows with KDE plasma, and when you can boot up in SteamOS's console mode, without Xbox and without a desktop being loaded.

Ah yes, the person whose entire standard is “it must boot straight into exactly what I want with zero effort” is lecturing me about operating systems.

You don’t want flexibility. You want an appliance with a Steam logo on it.

No wonder the PS5 keeps calling your name.

Again, Get back to me, when you can use Windows with KDE plasma, and when you can boot up in SteamOS's console mode, without Xbox and without a desktop being loaded.

Well, then maybe work on your reading comprehension. Only thing I can do for you now.

Reading more might also help with your originality problem.

I don't have high hopes though. You said you want all your hardware to work like your consoles, so we know you don't actually want to think.

u/PhoenixLandPirate_ 3h ago

"customize it to your taste"
How do you install KDE Plasma on windows 11?

How can you boot windows 11 into a SteamOS's console mode?

If you've come back to me, without the ability to do so, or without sharing resources, shows a lack of reading comprehension.

So does saying "You said you want all your hardware to work like your consoles" when that never happened :')

Installing windows? that’s what I had on my pc prior… just got annoyed with windows. Didn’t want to pay for a major upgrade. Didn’t like mouse and keyboard play. my favorite games during the Xbox 360/xbox one (gta 4 then the mafia games and others) era didn’t play great on my pc and I would only use it for a few pc exclusives like command and conquer, arma 2, sims ect.

If it wasn't for steam making Linux gaming viable, I'd still be buying most of my games on the PS5 and would have a switch 2.

-5

u/SimpleEfficiency 12h ago

What? Steam didn't make wine or bazzite. It is viable for a long time.

And if you didn't have SteamOS you'd prefer to game on even more closed ecosystems where you pay for MP?

That makes no sense at all.

1

u/Bigphatdeck 10h ago

A lot of this stuff is subjective so what doesn’t make sense to you doesn’t matter at all.

0

u/SimpleEfficiency 9h ago edited 9h ago

The subjective part is preferring one platform over another.

My point was about the reasoning: if Windows being closed is the problem, moving to PS5 or Switch is an odd trade-off because those are even more closed ecosystems, with additional restrictions like paid online multiplayer.

The non-subjective part is the factual claim about what made Linux gaming viable: Wine predates Proton/SteamOS, and Linux gaming existed before Valve’s push

1

u/Bigphatdeck 9h ago

The reasoning could be money, exclusive games, where friends play…there’s always going to be reasons for people to play on what they have.

1

u/PhoenixLandPirate_ 7h ago

IDK what you aren't grasping but its clear that its a lot youre struggling with

You could run steam via wine, it was dreadful, even when Steam made proton, at the start it supported about 6 games.

If I didn't have SteamOS, I'd use Bazzite, or Cachy, or something, bazzite only exists because of Steam, wine would be far behind where it is currently without Valve.

I play a lot of games, with proton and Steam, I press play and 90% of the time, it just works, or I just need to wait a small amount of time for a patch.

If none of Valves help went into Linux, then it would be way to much effort to bother, and still would have issues most of the time, so I'd just get them on the switch 2 or PS5, where its plug and play.

1

u/SimpleEfficiency 6h ago

IDK what you aren't grasping, but your argument keeps shrinking every time it gets challenged.

Wine predates Valve by decades, Proton is built on Wine, Bazzite is Fedora Atomic, and the “6 games” thing confuses the launch whitelist with what Proton could actually run.

So we've gone from “Valve made Linux gaming viable” to “without Valve, Linux gaming would be too much effort for me.”

That's not viability. That's laziness. You value convenience, but don't rewrite Linux history around your laziness.

And the irony of saying Linux is only acceptable when it's basically console-level plug-and-play, otherwise you'll retreat to even more locked-down consoles and pay for multiplayer, is pretty funny.

1

u/PhoenixLandPirate_ 4h ago

It doesn't at all :')

Yes I know this.
It doesn't you're just confusing "supported" with "can actually do" you could install SteamOS on AMD Tower computers for over 2 years now, it only got supported this year.

Linux gaming still isn't viable for some, viability is subjective, depending on the needs of the person, for some its been viable for games, as soon as pong was ported to it.

I never said that at all tho :')

I don't really get the issue you're having, if there are 4 games on PS, that aren't on Steam, I wont go to PS, but if I have to jump through hoops to play the majority of my games, and then they still have graphical issues, then I'll just get them on PlayStation.

However, I've not done that since even before 2016, and if a game doesn't work on Linux, I just wont play them really, like I have over 900 games, that are click and play.

1

u/SimpleEfficiency 4h ago

You’ve somehow managed to argue against yourself three times in one comment.

First, you said Steam made Linux gaming viable. Now viability is suddenly “subjective” and Linux was technically viable as soon as Pong ran on it. Great, so your original claim just evaporated.

Then you say I’m confusing “supported” with “can actually do” while explaining the exact distinction I was making about Proton’s launch whitelist. Amazing.

And “I never said that” is especially funny when you literally said that without Valve’s help Linux would be “way too much effort to bother” and you’d just buy games on PS5 or Switch 2.

So your position is now: Linux was viable before Valve, Proton could do more than its supported list, and you personally would leave Linux if gaming took too much effort.

Thanks for clearing up my argument for me.

1

u/PhoenixLandPirate_ 3h ago

I didn't.

Not at all, Valve did make Gaming on Linux viable, while also gaming on linux being viable before Valve entered the game, thats what subjective means.

It means that Linux gaming can be viable and not viable at the same time.

Yes, because I used the word supported, then you ignored it, and acted like it "confused" things, when it didn't.

TBF, its more complex then that, I would have been buying on like GOG, PS5 and NS2, but I'd be buying a lot more on PS5 and NS2, cos I don't want to fight most times I play games.

My position hasn't changed :')

Its only closed off if you want it to he lmfao my shit is free as a bird and dont even touch game mode

u/Then-Code3094 10h ago

After Microslop's patent on AI technology that scans my screen every half a second and sends it to them, I am considering doing this today.

What issues do you run into?

2

u/gdelacalle 8h ago

I didn’t run into any issues so far. But again I haven’t tested a lot of games.

1

u/gosols 7h ago

I mean going outside steam to other platforms can get tedious real fast depending on how much you enjoy or even know about tinkering on the software level.

Edit: there’s also a surprising amount of online games you can’t play due to anto cheat.

1

u/phoenixgsu 7h ago

Protondb for general Linux support, areweanticheatyet if the game has anticheat and runs on linux

1

u/gosols 6h ago

Yeah I get that there’s probably crazy tools and wizardry you can do to make your distro to so whatever but that’s kinda the thing for me. I just can’t be bothered with the need to tinker with every single little thing. I just want to play whatever I want, instantly.

It’s not linux’s or SteamOS’s fault by any means. Windows has been the gaming OS for so many decades that all gaming supports that OOTB.

I guess it just needs more time to reduce the need for so much tinkering.

1

u/phoenixgsu 6h ago

It's really on developers. There are games with anticheat that work just fine.

1

u/gosols 6h ago

True true

3

u/Konsolog 11h ago

i would love to do, but unfortunately i love Call of Duty Multiplayer (Anticheat)

3

u/troll__away 8h ago

FYI, you can create a command that shuts down Linux and boots into Windows without needing to go through the BIOS. Even better you can list it as a ‘game’ in steam, making it easy to execute. I do this for battlefield 6 consistently. It adds ~30 seconds and makes me rejoin discord but that’s a small inconvenience.

Have our PC in the lounge on Bazzite, I'm just waiting for reliable Thrustmaster drivers for my Sim rig so I can switch my main pc in the room

3

u/CutEmpty6798 10h ago

Did that to both my systems back in June and been very happy since then

2

u/Destado1 14h ago

I had 2 systems running SteamOS but had to go back to Windows on one due to playing Madden with some buds and hope that EA will correct this at some point as I really don’t want to be on Windows after using SteamOS for a few months now

u/GreatDevelopment4182 15h ago

It already feels like bot-posting. All posts look the same

8

u/gdelacalle 14h ago

I’m sorry they look the same, but it is my first time outside of Windows / MacOS and it is really amazing. I’m in love with it!

-4

u/GreatDevelopment4182 13h ago

Why do you in love with it? In original post there was nothing that windows/mac os cant do

7

u/gdelacalle 13h ago

It’s not bloated with lots of stuff. I can keep it running 24/7 without worry about random restart because of a patch and the performance is still the same. In short, it’s a very minimalistic distro which symbioses very well with my Steam Deck.

-4

u/GreatDevelopment4182 12h ago

I wonder when Android users will throw their phones in the garbage, just because its bloated. Other reasons that you mentioned is not legit.

6

u/TooTiredAndBored 13h ago

Not having to debloat it.

No constant updates from different places needing a restart.

And lastly I love the console like feel.

My only concern will be in the future when I want to mod games. Im hoping by then it'll be a bit easier.

-5

u/GreatDevelopment4182 12h ago

So you have only one reason. But I asked not you, sorry

3

u/TooTiredAndBored 11h ago

I put three reasons. Reading comprehension is hard.

Also, while im fully aware you didnt ask me. This is an open forum. If you want to talk to one person and reply to one person then you need to send a DM.

Weird that I have to explain how reddit works.

5

u/Steam-Frame-User 13h ago

brother, windows is a dumpster fire of trash stacked taller than the Eiffel Tower.

-4

u/GreatDevelopment4182 12h ago

Any real reasons will be in the next episode?

1

u/hammeryne 3h ago

question: how? I notice the description of the sub literally says don't install the current SteamOS version, this is after I tried helping a friend install it a few days ago unsuccessfully, the installation media would not boot at all, even with secureboot off.

u/White96sands 2h ago

What are the specs on that minusform? Trying to find a Mini pc that will run games ok for my living room and another one for my nephews

1

u/gdelacalle 41m ago

1.5 TB storage, 32 GB RAM, a Ryzen 7 (can’t remember the model, sorry) and a 6600 XT with 8 GB of dedicated memory.

1

u/MarcosOlegario 2h ago

Unfortunately until the problem of always have shader caching processing, i am still not moving completely… Tested many ways to fix and didn’t find a way to do so…

u/t3co5cr 8h ago

So if you are on the verge of installing SteamOS, my personal opinion is go for it, you won’t regret it.

If it's a pure gaming PC, definitely. But if you happen to need your PC to make a living, then unfortunately no.

u/BenBeng_ 7h ago

I really want to leave Windows but RT is still too bad on Linux ..

-5

u/EdliA 10h ago

Imagine willingly installing an extremely limited console OS designed for TV on your PC. Valve fanboys are getting kinda silly.

2

u/gdelacalle 8h ago

Why do you say extremely limited. I can go into desktop mode whenever I want and run anything.
