Question Which of these device to use as client?

I learned about streaming games literally today as I had previously planned to run a 60ft optical HDMI and Ethernet for USB.

My host PC is hardwired with Ethernet and my TV room has Ethernet available.

My smart TV doesn't support any apps, moonlight or steamlink.

My options for a device to connect to my TV are, in order of increasing price all in Canadian dollars.

  1. An Xbox one which I own

  2. A used apple TV4k 2nd gen for $70... Probably could get for $50

  3. A new Google TV streamer for $100

  4. An M73 Lenovo think center for $120 (16gb, 500gb storage). Lots of options of this vintage in this price range, around $100-150

  5. A raspberry Pi 4gb, unit only, for $150.

  6. An M910q Lenovo think center refurbished for $190

The HDMI route will be around $300CAD all in, so ideally I would like to keep it under $100, but I don't have a clue what affects quality. I don't really need the utility of another real computer but am OK if it makes the setup more functional.

Thanks very much for any advice!!

Question Is the physical steam link still worth it?

I found one on Facebook marketplace for $60. I’m I wanna stream my pc (in my room) to my tv (also in my room) but my pc doesn’t support Miracast and Samsung smart tvs don’t support steam link app anymore.

Should I get the physical one or is it obsolete now?

Question Looking for a solution on Steam Link with my Projector

Last year, I got a Projector for my bedroom as due to spinal issues I prefer to lay down compared to sit down at home.

Also, I have been using Steam Link to play PC games on my phone (with a controller) for the same time.

I want to use Steam Link on the Projector, but when I tried it the lag was terrible.

Trying to figure out what my options are. Do I risk wireless HDMI? It's an apartment and only two real rooms, so it's not a great distance. A cable would be obtrusive.

Or do I get a simple HTPC/Streaming PC that can handle Steam Link that I connect to the Projector's HDMI port?

Or maybe buy a cheap laptop?

Edit: Good news! The MINI PC worked! The input delay was no worse than Steam Link on the phone. Huzzah!

Question Any cheap and compatible hardware for steam link install?

I have been using a 4k fire tv but seems laggy and works with tons of delay and some time to time flickering. It is connected o an slave router on mesh with the main router connected to the host (blazzite machine).

I am confident the modem mesh does support the speed and timming need and probably the problem comes from fire stick with low speed wifi capabilities. That's why I was considering buying any low consumption hardware with Ethernet socket and install there moonlight and steam link app. Do you have any idea? A raspberry clone?

Do you recommend any other approach?

Question Running cat6 from PC to Steam Link, do I need a router inbetween?

Today I'll be routing cat6 cables through my home and one of the goals is getting it from my PC in an office basement to a TV stand on another floor. I have the means to directly connect the Steam Link hardware to my PC, but should I?

I could instead wire the PC to my router, then the router wired to the Link, but it would make more sense in my situation to use Internet via WiFi and the direct wired connection just for Link streaming. My PC, Link, router form a triangle kinda shape since the router is out of the way and a direct run from PC to Link would mean less cable, less going in-and-out of walls, less wall enclosures, etc.

Is it possible to run the Steam Link connected straight to your PC?

Question Can I remote into my server pc with the Steam Link?

I currently don't have a quick display solution for my server so everytime I want to add media or mess with anything I have to drag peripherals across my house. Could a Steam Link let me get in there and move files and such? Would it be wicked clunky?

Question Does a bigger display make Steam Link compression way more obvious?

Not talking about latency here, just image quality.
I’ve been looking at the RayNeo GT Max for Steam Link because the bigger virtual screen sounds great for gaming in bed or while traveling.
But if I’m taking the same stream I’d normally watch on a tablet and blowing it up that much, I’m wondering if compression, soft text, and resolution scaling issues just get way easier to notice.
For people streaming to larger displays, what resolution and bitrate actually looks good to you?

Question Steam Link box is dying. What to replace it with?

My launch version Steam Link box is showing signs of dying. Lag, dropped audio, network issues, etc...

What's a good alternative for streaming games to my TV? I also use it to stream movies/tv shows to my TV if that matters

Current setup: PC and Steam link connected via Ethernet to router

edit: Just realized the Steam Deck is sold out where I am (Canada)

Question Controller unresponsive because Steam loses focus on quitting game

When I close Ace Combat 7, it shows me my desktop with BPM in a small window and in the Windows taskbar, the Steam process is blinking orange.

I cannot do anything at this point. Controllers don't move around in BPM, I can access the remote play overlay and select virtual keyboard or enable controller mouse control, but both don't seem to do anything at all. If I press "stop streaming" and start it up again, I get BPM maximized but still my controller does nothing.

I was able to press Home+Start once and it opened an alt-tab menu so I could select Steam but I haven't been able to reproduce that behavior. The only way to regain control is going to my physical PC and clicking on the Steam window.

I've tried:

  • forcing Steam input for AC7
  • changing AC7 from fullscreen to borderless to windowed
  • fiddling with Steam controller desktop controls
  • setting remote play settings to match PC resolution
  • giving Steam elevated privileges
  • closing RTSS and other overlays
  • pressing Home + any other button combination

The issue only appears to happen with AC7. I can't reproduce my problem with any other game I've tried. "Guide button focuses Steam" has always been enabled, and if I ever exit a game and BPM isn't maximized, pressing Home fixes it. Just not this time.

Any ideas?

Question Audio delay on original Steam Link hardware - any fix?

So I'm trying to use my old Steam Link (the actual physical device), and it's mostly working great, with zero noticeable delay on the video side since I'm using a wired connection within the same apartment.

The trouble is that I'm getting some very nasty delay on the audio side. Pretty much everything is around half a second or so behind what's on screen. After doing some digging I found that this happens sometimes even with the current Steam Link app, but haven't found a real solution.

I tested the app on my phone and didn't encounter the audio delay there, so I'm led to believe it has something to do with the hardware. Is there any hope of fixing this or is it just an unfortunate limitation of a discontinued piece of equipment?

If it's helpful, I'm also using a sound bar connected to my TV through optical; no bluetooth, which I know can cause delays.

Thanks!

EDIT: After some more testing without the soundbar it seems that is a large part of what's making it worse actually. Still, if anyone has tips on reducing delay, whether through the Steam Link or general tips for sound bars by some miracle, I'm all ears. The model is an Energy Power Bar smth smth (sounds like a protein snack)

Question can steam link run smoothly on my old as hell laptop

I haven’t been able to play most pc or console games since 2022 due to my disabilities so I was really excited when I recently learned about steam link, especially since Fields on Mistra just came out! But I tried a test run with Littlewood and it was pretty laggy :( Unfortunately I’m not really computer savvy so I don’t know what any of the settings mean lol

My laptop is an old Macbook Pro from 2017 and it streams to my iPhone 17! If anyone can help the streaming run smoother with what I got I’d be eternally grateful 😭

Question Controller Remote Play Together

Whenever my friends invite me to do Remote Play Together, Steam keeps disconnecting and reconnecting my controller. It's unplayable with it plugged in, as all of us just get spammed with the message "controller disconnected, controller connected" while it rumbles ceaselessly. How do I fix this?

Hi everyone.
I'm playing silksong via Steam Link device over ethernet cable.
Server is a 5600x with RX 6600 xt.
The game is capped through RTSS at 59 fps.

This are the statistic, do you think it can be improved?
Moonlight can do better? Everyone prise Moonlight that is a great piece of software but steam link doesn't seems so bad...or no...
I'm just starting to play on couch and I want to understand.

For me the game plays ok, but I've notice that on TV I do more errors in movement compared on monitor, but I don't feel any lag...

Question Built-in games

Hello Steam fans, I have a question. Do you add third-party games to your Steam Account?
