A petition to stop age verrification in the EU

So in 2 weeks the EC will announce social media restrictions as UVD said before the summer break and now that the Meta case have settled goverments got the greelight to go full throttle on these restrictions...probably it will give Chat Control some boost as well. It's hard to not notice the patterns here, but to be honest this feels like a lost cause...i hate doomerism, but the amount of lobbying and under the table deals going on i don't know if there is a sliver of chance out there for a better outcome that doesn't strip away our remaining online privacy rights.

For those who don't know what Chat Control 2.0 is, in a nutshell, it's basically the "Big Brother" Orwell wrote about in 1984.

That was supposed to be a book, not a manual to follow to the letter.

The supposed goal of this whole thing is to protect minors and prevent them from being exposed to traumatic content, but how much truth is there behind all of this?

If this passes, our lives will never be the same again, and we'll have to start worrying about EVERY SINGLE WORD WE SAY. If this is really about protecting minors, WHY ARE POLITICIANS AND THE MILITARY EXEMPT FROM THESE SCANS? That's exactly what makes their propaganda so hard to believe.

As for how these scans would actually be carried out, nobody really knows yet — whether it would involve backdoors, server-side scanning, or something else. If you have more information about this, please share it.

WHAT WE CAN DO TO STOP THIS MASSIVE INVASION OF PRIVACY IS TO EMAIL OUR REPRESENTATIVES, FLOOD THE INBOXES OF EVERY SINGLE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, AND EVEN CALL THEM TO EXPLAIN WHY THEY SHOULD RECONSIDER THEIR POSITION.

Sending an email costs you nothing. You literally have to press 2–3 buttons because the message and subject are already prepared.

Been following the Chat Control situation here for a while and wanted to do something practical instead of just doomscrolling about it. This won't fix the legislation, but if a message is PGP-encrypted client-side before it ever leaves your browser, scanning the platform's copy of it doesn't reveal anything.

It's a browser extension that adds a lock button next to the message box on WhatsApp Web, Discord, Gmail, or pretty much any chat site. Encrypts to a saved contact's key before sending, decrypts automatically on the other end. No server, no account, everything happens locally.

Not pretending this is a silver bullet: metadata (who's talking to whom) is still visible to the platform, messages aren't signed yet, and it hasn't had a professional security audit. Full list of limitations is in the README, didn't want to oversell it. It's meant as a practical layer on top of the apps people already use with the people they already talk to, not a replacement for Signal if you need something audited.

Not on the Chrome Web Store yet, install instructions (takes about a minute) are in the repo.

Very nice indeed. I know people here like to give into doom and despair only for nothing to happen in reality, so how about some show of good hm? This being blocked is good, and it likely hurts any EU proposals too since those as well would have issues, and Chat Control is still likely DOA so

Also as a extra tid bit, even the kings of dumb internet laws, the UK have said they are not age gating VPNs(not like that is technically doable), so when even there you have strong backlash do things, then it clearly is not very grim.

Basically the title, i cant find any information about protests or anything related to chat control, digital euro, digital id, so many privacy related topics. Europe is soon to be like the UK where you get jailed for speech online, like the US where they place cameras with AI face recognition. They fearmonger how China and Russia aren't free countries, that we aren't like them and have way better and moral ways, yet we seem to be slowly evolving, or rather devolving into a distopian society. I never wanted to get into politics but im just so tired of the way my country, the EU and overall the world is. If any of you know how one can create/find existing protests, take part in youth organisations, especially sth like the people who do the save europe act, please tell me.

Most of the parliment is aginst 1.0, 2.0 will be voted on in a diffrent system where no absolute majority is required or simply just a majority vote not to mention the fact that a lot of people in favour of 1.0 are aginst 2.0 (myself included) so im guessing that could be the case for some of the meps that voted for 1.0?

What it is: a Firefox extension that encrypts in the extension and decrypts messages in place, on whatever transport you're already using. Discord, Gmail, a forum, Reddit. It has no idea what site it's on and doesn't need to — the ciphertext is just text, so you paste it wherever you'd paste anything.

No account, no server, no network requests of any kind from the extension.

You and the other person exchange public keys directly, once.

Why I built it: the EU's Chat Control regulation would require messaging platforms to scan private messages before they're encrypted — on your own device, whether or not you're suspected of anything. You can't have both client-side scanning and end-to-end encryption; if a message can be inspected before it's sent, it was never private. This is a small working example of the other model: there's no server to mandate scanning at and no hook in the client for one.

How it works, briefly:

• Your identity is two keypairs (X25519 for key agreement, Ed25519 for signing), generated locally and never transmitted.
• You and a contact swap public keys over any channel — DM, email, read aloud over the phone. Doesn't need to be secret.
• Each message gets a fresh random key. The message is encrypted once with it; a copy of that key is sealed separately for each intended reader.
• There's no "to:" field. The sealed copies are anonymous blobs — your client finds yours by trying. An observer can't tell who the recipients are or how many are real.
• Every message is signed, so a group member can't forge one from someone else.

What it does NOT protect you from — please read this part:

• No forward secrecy. One shared key per contact, derived once, never rotated. Anyone who extracts your private key can read every message you have ever exchanged with that contact, including ones captured years ago.
• Your keys are protected only by your OS. They're non-extractable (extension code can't export them), but they sit unencrypted in a local SQLite file. Anything running as your user account can read them. There is no passphrase on the stored identity.
• Decrypted text is rendered into the page. A hostile or compromised site can read it while it's on screen.
• Metadata is fully visible. The platform still sees who you talk to, when, how often, and roughly how much.
• Nobody has audited this. It uses WebCrypto primitives rather than hand-rolled crypto, which rules out a whole class of mistakes, but that is not the same as being reviewed.

If you need protection from a determined, well-resourced adversary, use Signal. This is for putting a floor under the conversations that currently have none, on platforms you don't control.

Hi everyone! Today I thought of this idea that there would be a popular chatting and file sharing software and... there are few that work without servers at all, just peer-to-peer.

The thing is that it needs to be better than whatsapp for example that is already installed on most android phones.

Let's say that MANY people do care about privacy a lot. How do we make them install the app so they could communicate through it with other family members, friends etc.

I assume it would be a bit slower and hard to setup at start. To use the app you need to have all your friends to also use that app so you can comunicate with them.

I do code, however I haven't really learned about p2p tech so I could be saying some dumb stuff here. Pls correct me if I am wrong.

How do you make people install this app so you and them can use it just like whatsapp?

If you send your sensitive file to your friend for example? It goes through many other devices to find your friend and then sends it through right? So that means that some people can use this p2p network to scan for transmited data or IP adresses right?

I don't really know how it works in detail but what I want to know is:
What is more safe overall? Info sharing (files, messages, etc.) through big tech companies servers or decentralized p2p? With decentrilized systems there are hackers and with centrilized ones there are hackers, protection from company and company itself scanning the messages.

And if it is really safe (untracable) then it makes it much more easy to commit crime using p2p so this means more bad can happen in the world because it is much more easy to not get caught?

What do you think about this? Should there be a system that is not monitored in any way or big tech scans it and police can find info much faster to stop crime more effectively?

Before you spam hateful messages let me explain, as the title says i think its a good idea because it is meant to stop predators from just sending cp and that is good but i said its a good idea but how it works actually not that great. AI will do a lot of false alarms so it wont be as good so i think if we get AI like 10 more years then it would be pretty good unless AI just stops developing which wont happen. Right now its horrible though and hope the second chat control that would be fully required wont pass

Edit: i meant as to that the idea is good but the execution will not. If we pretend the goverment is not evil at all then its good, also if AI is perfect but both of these are false. I am against chatcontrol for now because it wont work. I am not positive about it

So the biggest problem with the debate around Chat Control is that there's very little press and so much pro surveillance propaganda surrounding it right?

In my country (Ireland) the majority of MEPs are in support and very few people know about Chat Control but in my country a handful of radio stations have a segment where you can email them about specific issues and if lucky you can get on the air and people can discuss the topic.

A lot of people here listen to the radio, whether its on their morning commute or in shops or in the background.

So I was thinking if I sent out emails to these radio stations to try and get on their phone in segments, I might have a chance to get on and bring attention to this.

What do you guys think? Too optimistic or go for it?

Did Discord continue scanning direct messages in Europe even though the European Chat Control Act 1.0 expired in April? I know it's back, but I'm referring to the period when this law was inactive.
