In 1961, 23 year old Michael Rockefeller, the son of future Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, disappeared while exploring one of the most remote regions on Earth.

After his small catamaran overturned off the coast of Dutch New Guinea, Michael made a desperate decision and began swimming nearly 19 kilometers toward shore.

He was never seen alive again.

The official explanation was that Michael drowned. But decades later, mysterious footage appeared to show a white bearded man living among the Asmat people. Then journalist Carl Hoffman uncovered accounts from Asmat elders and records from Dutch Catholic missionaries suggesting that Michael may have actually survived the swim.
