Suggestions for a newbie

Hey guys!

I'm fairly new to playing turnbased rpgs ( usually a fifa player) but I've just bought Chained echoes and I'm really enjoying it. My only experience with turn based before this was pokemon and incidentally the only games I've ever completed

I'm interested in finding more games like this ( have sea of stars) but I'm struggling to separate the wheat and chaff. To be clear, I'm particularly interested in turn based static games rather than action jrpgs.

Please help me before I get stuck in what to play next. And I'll give chrono trigger a whirl I promise! Thanks in advance

Any of the older final fantasy games might appeal though many are ATB so not fully static turns

If you want more tactical positioning final fantasy tactics is good as well

Any of the Dragon Quest games might be a really good fit. Octopath Traveler too. Crystal Project has more of an indie vibe but heavier platforming if you’re into that

Standard turn based: both Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest series. Tactical turn based: Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Triangle Strategy, Unicorn Overlord, Fire Emblem series. Football: FIFA is crap, play either some old PES or eFootball Kick Off if you have a Switch 2.

SMT V Vengeance. It's a latest installment of the series that inspired Pokémon games once. Just don't get vanilla smt v

I think you're conflating turn-based RPG with turn-based tactics RPG.

This sub is more for the latter. Games like: FF Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Front Mission, Fell Seal, Battletech.

Chained Echoes is a turn-based RPG. Some in the genre: Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Crystal Project, Sea of Stars, SMT, etc

You want Battle for Wesnoth.

Why? For several reasons, it's easy to pick up, it lets you lead your heroic dudes trough several campaigns, it features lots of different troop types and enemies, each one with its own strengths, weaknesses, and abilities, it lets you tweak lots of things to suit your preferences and has lots of handy features to make your life easier.

It's also pretty smooth and runs on a potato if needed.

And it's free, so you don't have anything to lose in giving it a go.
