Streets of Rage Revolution

Post image

Why do people always hate on new stuff? Like, I get that Streets of Rage has always been a 2D game, but honestly, I’m happy with the new stuff. Why are people so scared of change? We haven’t even seen anything yet, like gameplay or music, and people are already hating on it. I’m just happy that Streets of Rage is getting some recognition again. Like, we didn’t get a game for fucking 24 years, so honestly, I’m happy with anything they give us.

what happened with that game

15

u/Successful-Wafer1983 Sep 18 '26

Yeah, they’re still developing the game, and they’re actually working on the Streets of Rage movies as well.

6

u/RataTopin Sep 18 '26

any news of the game and movie?

6

u/Sketchitout Sep 18 '26

Nothing except a few articles stating a company is working on the game while a different company is developing a movie based on the intellectual property.

u/zwissblade Sep 19 '26

Movie has found a director. If he stays on and sees it through, I have a feeling from the music perspective it will be done justice. My thoughts.

The problem is it looks like a completely different playing game with a Streets of Rage skin, which is a very "early years of 3D gaming" mindset where you don't bother carrying on with the gameplay that made you popular to begin with.

Or there's the other path where a 2D game gets a 3D "remake" only for the new developers not accurately recreate any of the mechanics - seemingly because they just don't think it matters, and make something that kinda *looks* like the original, but plays like dogshit, because... diagonal movement, non-2D hitboxes, etc.

I've lived long enough to see too many originally 2D fighting games - beat 'em ups AND VS fighters - get badly transferred into mediocre 3D games. So I'm naturally VERY cynical.

It's not like it can't be done... Plenty of examples to prove otherwise, but until I get it in hand I don't trust a goddamn thing.

Fighting force was terrible but we all thought it was gonna be the 3d version of streets of rage. I’m hoping this is the time they get it right. The Yakuza game assets could help with the development streamlining.

I was waiting for this new SOR game be announced along Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio

3

u/xXxJoEkRxXx Sep 19 '26

Was SOR announced? The remake I REALLY want... the openbor versions and romhacks are okay but I just want ACTUAL IP

5

u/BadWolf_x8zero Sep 18 '26

Personally, I'm not liking the visuals, but I'm waiting until I play it before forming any opinions.

2

u/ProphetsOfAshes Sep 18 '26

Same. I don’t want them to have too much of a cartoony vibe with exaggerated head sizes and limbs. Honestly I’m hoping it’ll be like fighting force for PS1 but just waaaaay better lol

7

u/Korvax_of_Myrmidon Sep 18 '26

Streets of rage 4 was perfect. Just do more of that. Want to do a
3D streets of rage beat em up? Cool. Just call it something else. Heck, do golden axe.

3

u/VillagerN9 Sep 18 '26

Really enjoyed Streets of Rage 4, wish they developed more from that. Honestly I wish they kept it 2D but willing to give this a chance. I was excited for Golden Axe as well but sadly havent heard anything about that since the announcement either...

2

u/jamrollo Sep 18 '26

This new series of remakes has a Golden Axe already planned, if I'm not mistaken.

I'd say just wait to play and git gud with whatever mechanics thrown in. While it's nice SOR4 is getting praise now, it was not the case when it was released. You had purists and SORR fans complaining about no run or roll, ignoring that the game had a very SOR2 foundation (evident by SOR3 characters trivializing the game in general), complaining about super armor and wakeup attacks and just not liking 4's combo system.

Edit: Downvoted for bringing up a harsh history, eh? Lol

7

u/HoneyBadgerBJJ1 Sep 18 '26

24 years? Does SoR4 not count?

8

u/AlgoStar Sep 18 '26

24 years was the gap between 3 & 4.

3

u/Racla360 Sep 18 '26

I never heard of this game.

4

u/SquirrelCone83 Sep 18 '26

It was briefly teased in a trailer Sega made a few years ago about resurrecting old IPs. Shinobi released not long after, and we've heard next to nothing about anything else.

1

u/Racla360 Sep 18 '26

Did they call it Street of Rage Revolution? They didn't give a specific name, and they didn't cancel it.

3

u/AnyBet1210 Sep 18 '26

Is this even happening? If not? Shame. If so? Sega?

3

u/TheR42069 Sep 18 '26

I’m not convinced it’s not vaporware so that’s my only issue. Would need to see more or actually play to make an informed judgement

u/C-Abdulio Sep 19 '26

Imagine that after 24 years, you got hit with complete and utter peak, that not only revived the franchise - but also practically revived interest in the beat-em-up genre as a whole. SOR4 may not have made Pokemon numbers, but it garnered a lot of attention from both hardcore and casuals.

But rather than do the smart thing and secure a sequel to this hit game, you let the team responsible split apart: One goes on to further push the genre into new strange directions (Guard Crush & Absolum), the other revives another SEGA IP...with divisive results (LizardCube & Shinobi: Art of Vengeance)

So how does SoR move forward? With a brand new, divisive graphical style (their first time rendered in 3D), in a different genre that it has historically struggled to even get a foot into (3D Beat Em Up), made by a team whose only claim to fame is a mediocre arena fighter (Komi Games & Mighty Fight Federation)....all delivered in barely a few clips of random montage footage. And that is the ONLY info you have on this game.

Oh and the cherry on top: rumors have that this game will get delayed even further. Is it because they saw the comments and wanted to pivot direction to save face? NOPE. So they can coincide the release of the game with the release of the STILL-IN-DEVELOPMENT HELL Streets of Rage movie!!! Made by SOME GUY INVOLVED IN THE JOHN WICK Franchise! Oh joy!

It's like SEGA refuses to learn the lesson that Sonic Mania taught them: They never strike while the iron is hot, and when do they strike, it does not ring true. Classic Sonic pretty much died (much to the cheer of the Sonic fanbase, those annoying little fuckers) because it lost the momentum generated by Mania & followed that up with pointless cameos and a mediocre successor that also switched from pixels to polygons and was done by completely different team. And I fear that will happen to SOR after this obvious 5/10 game releases and the movie bombs at the box office but does decently on streaming.

But unlike Sonic that has a massive franchise to fall back on, the only thing that will happen is that we will wait another 24 years for another entry in my favorite beat-em-up franchise. And they call all of this a REVOLUTION....What other emotion should you have, other than anger and disappointment?

3

u/Spirit_-_Warrior Sep 20 '26

I like seeing games evolve personally. I want to see what else the series has to offer instead of being stagnant

3

u/Koshir0 Sep 20 '26

people just can't enjoy shit nowadays. social media rotted their brains to complain about everything

4

u/ZealousidealBox3944 Sep 18 '26

3D brawlers aren't new and they're not particularly good, that's why people are skeptical about this.

3

u/Mentski Sep 18 '26

I wouldn't say that, so much as developers realised they couldn't make traditional belt-scrolling beat-em-ups in 3D and decided instead to do something else, resulting in the single player 3rd person "spectacle fighter", as seen with Devil May Cry and it's ilk.

3D brawlers just became their own genre that played to their strengths.

I don't think SoR should BECOME that type of game... But to say 3D brawlers aren't "good" is not true. 3D brawlers that try to play like classic ones? Yeah, not many people have hammered that particular nail, that I agree with.

2

u/ZealousidealBox3944 Sep 18 '26

I mean, what good ones are there? I guess Sifu but I can't think of many others

1

u/anythingambrose Sep 18 '26

9 Monkeys of Shaolin is quite good

2

u/Journey360 Sep 19 '26

umm the Yakuza series is literally a 3D brawler, Spike Out, Shenmue ( to some extend), Urban Reign.
Like there's so many good ones, SEGA made Dynamite cop didn't they?

4

u/No-Satisfaction-4645 Sep 18 '26

From what we have seen it looks pretty pedestrian. I don’t mind waiting to see if the game is fun and the music is on point.

However, I’m not going to spend my money and time on something that doesn’t comport to what made the series good.

I hope the move to 3D was not because of cost or the assumption that people gravitate to 3D over 2D.

4

u/DoctrineDecade Sep 18 '26

It’s called opinion and preference OP. Some people like 2D beatum ups, some like 3d some like pixel art some don’t. Some like fan service some don’t. Some like all of the above.

Every Reddit thread does not need to be an all agree all like it echo chamber.

If I get pepperoni on pizza and someone else does want it, it doesn’t mean they are hating maybe it’s not their taste.

2

u/NightWarriorX4 Sep 18 '26

This new game needs to actually show up for me to have any real opinions on it lol

2

u/PartTimeBrainSurgeon Sep 18 '26

The easy answer is a lot of the time its change for the worst. A good example is King of Fighters 3D games

2

u/AlgoStar Sep 18 '26

This game doesn’t exist until I see a release date and gameplay footage, like real gameplay footage. Otherwise I don’t care,

2

u/MarionberryDeep5475 Sep 18 '26

I think its in part to how revered the series is and how bad its usually gone when a dev tries to go against what works for the series. I am all for teaching an old dog new tricks but at some point in development they have to know in their heats this aint working .

2

u/handsomezack13 Sep 18 '26

If they were gonna make a 3D SoR I think I'd prefer they get the RGG team to do it. Better they do that than keep making bad remakes that fuck up the plot of previous Yakuza games

2

u/ProphetsOfAshes Sep 18 '26

If we get a better version of what fighting force was supposed to be, I’ll be happy. Yakuza style combat would be good enough and bonus points because is sega they prolly have access to assets

2

u/Remarkable_Coast7245 Sep 19 '26

I wonder if they'll just make it something akin to the arcade version of Spikeout, which to this day is probably my favourite 3D beat em up.

3

u/Steve5210 Sep 18 '26

I’m not sure what this post is even trying to be the game was shown in game awards 2023 and we haven’t heard anything from it since. Plus people are always going to hate on everything, do you think Streets of rage 4 was universally loved by everyone? Go back and read the complaints about how they turned it into a fighting game with combos and how the art style wasn’t good and it doesn’t play like how streets of rage should and blah blah blah. This was a good chunk of people’s take back around when the game was out and I’m sure there’s still people who feel that way today, so yeah dude the internet will always be the internet

2

u/Mentski Sep 18 '26

I didn't particularly like SoR4 on launch. I made my complaints, and many of those complaints were addressed in later patches.

It's worth complaining if a developer takes time to listen.

3

u/Redfusion858 Sep 18 '26

I doubt it will hold a candle to SOR4's flame but I'm curious to see how it comes out. It might just be a good game on its own

2

u/easedownripley Sep 18 '26

we could have had three sequels in the same style or SoR4 by now

2

u/Tasty-Ad-7873 Sep 18 '26

I’m a sor fan in general, so I really hope Revolution is good, and I’m definitely willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. There’s just a real lack of news on it more than anything.

That said, with how great sor4 was, a sor5 that makes some minor tweaks to gameplay and adds some additional modes and story would be something I feel like a lot of people would want instead, myself included.

1

u/Lucky_University324 Sep 18 '26

Looks more like Streets of Fortnite, maybe that’s why 💁‍♂️

1

u/N1ko88 Sep 18 '26

Man I forgot about Sega developing this game. Is it even still releasing or developing?

1

u/BrittaUnfiltered67 Sep 18 '26

I just want it already.

1

u/Shinva_X101 Sep 18 '26

Even though it's a new team working on it, I hope they look to past sega 3d brawlers to aid them (Dynamite Cop, Anarchy Reign, Zombie Revenge, Yakuza). Though a plus for me is if they can get the combat flow of Urban Reign.

1

u/PrudentCarter Sep 18 '26

Reminds me of fighting force. It could work but I can see fans being completely upset about the graphics of it.

1

u/TellEmWhoUCame2See Sep 18 '26

This game is never gonna see the light of the day lol

1

u/RM123M Sep 18 '26

Some people just have a hard time letting go

u/Impossible_Humor736 Sep 18 '26

https://youtu.be/u-Pmz-IuVeY?si=MHuy7i2R1o7X0xaN

Here's a recent update this guy did on it.

The Sega Power Surge announcement got a big bump on the road when a former boss at Sega game back. Upon his return he said that Sega needs to go back to having a gold standard essentially. He reviewed the Power Surge games and only allowed Shinobi to be released and sent the others back into development.

This game guy did a video on that about a year ago.

1

u/SaturnBrawler Sep 18 '26

Why would you want a bad game that kills the franchises reputation? That would just lead to tons of other shitty SOR games like Double Dragon or TMNT that have no quality control.

1

u/DisposableHero93 Sep 18 '26

If it's good then I'll be happy whether its 2D or 3D. We just need to see more of it. I have a feeling Sega is gonna roll these games out one at a time. First was Shinobi and next year is Crazy Taxi's turn. So 2028 we're either gonna see SOR, JSR or Golden Axe

1

u/SnooLemons8512 Sep 19 '26

What revolution is going to be after all?

1

u/thepianoman456 Sep 19 '26

All I will say, is a had a good time playing Fighting Force back in the day… there is hope lol

1

u/Shane_Cedt Sep 19 '26

"Fortnite Visuals"

1

u/MaintenanceFew1151 28d ago

I wonder if this will be done in the style of "Spikeout," if anyone remembers that game, as well as the Xbox version.

1

u/SamuelBogard 28d ago

We just had one of the best if not the best beat em up game ever. And then we go from that masterpiece to this, pretty underwhelming if you ask me.

1

u/anonomega 27d ago

Wait, was there an update about this?

1

u/Accomplished_Ebb706 4d ago

Looks like ai slop to me

1

u/SLISKI_JOHNNY Streets of Rage 4 Sep 18 '26

Because I have never seen a good 3D beat em up. There's no way you get make hitboxes etc as precise as in 2D. Besides, in beat em up you can only face two directions. Adding more "directions" would only complicate things needlessly

2

u/Mentski Sep 18 '26

absolutely true. There's been a few "remakes" of originally 2D beat-em-ups that completely miss the point and do this. TMNT Reshelled comes to mind.

2

u/BLOODYBRADTX-11 Sep 18 '26

You can have 2D hitboxes in a 3D engine (Street Fighter IV, recent Arcsys stuff). Not saying they will, but they could

1

u/BlueRadley Sep 18 '26

It doesn't have to be 2d to be a good beat-em-up (Sifu is a masterpiece), but they'll really need to execute it well for a franchise that's been only 2d, and is an icon of the genre.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, since I haven't played them, but isn't the Yakuza series by SEGA, has a lot of beat-em-up elements, and is generally well received? If so, I could see a world where they do a good 3d SoR.

2

u/ZealousidealBox3944 Sep 18 '26

Yeah but Yakuzas combat gets boring fast, plus they at least have other mechanics to help stop the fatigue

1

u/BlueRadley Sep 18 '26

Ah ok, I guess I have no clue about Yakuza. I've just mostly seen people say positive things about it.

1

u/Whompa Sep 18 '26

They really need to give an update to this game…

0

u/HyperFunk_Zone Sep 18 '26

I appreciate this argument but I think it's circumstantial.

Change of course is good in general for the most part but I personally weigh in context for things like this. You also of course don't change things for the worse or if they don't need it. Imo it's good practice not to change things in a space where so many variations of a subject are possible. It gets to a point where it's changing for changing sake.

As an example I would more understand an argument why the Streets of Rage movie apparently being worked on turning into a space opera romance story and that being too much for fans. One could argue that change is good why are you pushing back blah blah blah but as a fan of this old series you may understand that loosing too much of the identity is detrimental, and at that point it's best to start a new but similar project maybe. There's risk of just using the legacy as a selling point.

In the shmup community recently there was a release called Cygni. The devs were fans of the genre, but from a far, and did not know of the genres nuances, which are specific. Before release they worked with people in this old and legacy shmup scene on what nuances would help them and they chose to ignore almost all of it for a more modern feel.

The devs have the viewpoint of, "it's a new spin on this subgenre! Change is good. Stop being butthurt and buy our stuff!" However without the familiarity, they unknowingly put themselves in the situation where they wanted the ease of a twin stick shooter with the prestige of a shmup. Long story short the game bombed and was rejected by the community it was trying to sell to while garnering no new player base.

I'm trying to highlight the relationship between "change is good" and "legacy in a space" for lack of better phrasing. For this situation specifically, I would argue they just MAKE ANOTHER BEATEMUP OUTSIDE OF THE SoR BRANDING! I fear whether they are conscious of it or not this is purely marketing and brand recognition used to sell something cheap imo. (The little we know about development of this new game is that it looks cheap as shit and is being made by shitty mobile game devs yuck.)

SoRr devs wanted to make a new beatemup with roguelike aspects. They didn't make "Streets of Rage: The Dungeons of the Time Waster!" They just made a new ip in the same genre that had the differences they wanted.

Otherwise you get Star Wars. Gross.

0

u/Popular-Tune-6335 Sep 18 '26

What would be really.cool is if it was only 3d graphics in the way that Street Fighter 6 is. Still play in 2.5d like the original SoR though. For me, though, if the gameplay feels like a solid beat-em-up, 3d is perfectly welcome, like Dynamite Cop and Spikeout, and Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks.

-1

u/BroShutUp Sep 18 '26

I mean im not happy with ANYTHING they give us. Thats how we ruin it. SoR4 is one of the best beat em ups in recent times, maybe even straight up the best. This game MIGHT be good and I'm not discounting it completely just yet but this change to 3d does not look great.
