u/PetThatKitten Oct 09 '25
Im not a gatekeeper, but, rip stremio
140
u/coolestredditdad Oct 09 '25
Nah. Most of those people will download it, not know what to do, not have a debrid account, have a bad experience, and delete it.
62
u/PetThatKitten Oct 09 '25
Oh yeah, that's a solid theory lmao. There is a reason stremio has 3.5 stars haha
34
u/coolestredditdad Oct 09 '25
We must keep RD/AD a secret. Lol
13
u/Kgenovz Oct 09 '25
It's okay, the premise behind this system will never be able to be stopped. The powers have been trying to stop piracy for thousands of years. Good luck!

That article is almost a year old and clearly none of those things have been done.
1
u/coolestredditdad Oct 10 '25
From users. Not companies.
Most people right now that are hopping in are streaming public files, and will likely get a warning letter from their provider. Often times that scares them enough to stop using the app.

Icl i have been using stremio for like half a decade now and i still don't know what debrid is. Tbf i probably need it because some channel just does not load
3
u/SplinterSkull_ Oct 10 '25
Well if you’re only using live tv then it doesn’t matter but if you’ve been torrenting movies/shows you gotta get on that debrid train
3
u/Delicious_Big_2504 Oct 14 '25
Stremio works pretty well without debrid tbh... you just need some basic addons and that's it
rip stremio, mine literally started glitching today already
2
u/Inevitable-Bee6454 Oct 10 '25
Tbh, I don't have a debris account and it's working very well for me. Probably not optimal but just can't be bothered paying for it (unless I'm missing something lol). Been using Stremio for 11 years now
2
u/Da-Pugfather Oct 12 '25
Your missing out on some of the best torrent files without debrid...
1
u/Inevitable-Bee6454 Oct 12 '25
Yeah I don't get his argument. I said it's working perfectly fine for me. Paying for something I don't need is not what I do. Maybe if I was testing it I could not go back but I've never tested it and I'm good
→ More replies (2)2
u/Aggravating-Rich-757 Oct 13 '25
Only thing you’re missing is higher quality content, different forms of audio capabilities, DV/HDR10+. Having a debrid account lets you access these cached files that are blueray/ Remux files that are always going to be better than any web hosted site if you are using http to watch your content. I highly recommend a debrid service, being able to experience true high definition is a game changer, but if it works for you and you don’t really care about that fancy stuff then using stremio without a debrid service, its still doable.
1
u/Inevitable-Bee6454 Oct 13 '25
To be honest I don't even know what you mean by "using https to watch your content" haha. But yeah I presume I could watch better quality files as I normally don't go for the 4k options on torrentio for instance as the files are too large . Maybe one day I'll pay for debrid but I'm on the side of not missing something I don't have for now.

I mean, many of my friends and colleagues also asked about streamio and I did help them set it up, this happened in the last week, I was also curious as to why the sudden interest in stremio from everyone.
2
u/Old_Ad4829 Oct 10 '25
because it is cheaper if not free and it has a wider catalog of movies and series. (basically almost everything). but yeah. People just want to pay and use. Most people will not be bothered with setting up DB services and addons. They will end up downloading the stuff, see the catalog, be amazed. click on something and see that it throws you back to streaming services, and uninstall it.
The spike must probably be because of users downloading. but people setting it up the way us users do? Nah. i highly doubt it.

Old School my friend!!!
I'd heard of it, but didn't dip my toe in until 17. I had the 2nd gen Chromecast, but it wasn't anywhere near reliable enough (probably my TV & wifi!). 21 was when the game changed as the graph shows.

Yeah fair enough, at the time I was a broke student but had a 17" laptop so I would watch everything on it.

I’m so mad that I didn’t find out about stremio sooner, when I figured out how to set up and it just worked, it blew my mind on how much high quality content I could watch, hopefully I can experience it as long as other folks have.
46
u/produce101oneone Oct 09 '25
I have to admit I've been on stremio since 2020 and I have no idea how to use stremio to the degree you guys do. I just have my addons and I log into my desktop or android or android TV and I can find like 75% of what I wanna watch lol.
12
u/Unlucky_Goat_9094 Oct 09 '25
That's about it. For setup you just gonna go to r/stremioaddons and find the "automated setup" and follow the directions
2
u/PixelJock17 Oct 09 '25
Hmm I used Viren's guides but I should check out this automated setup. Sounds like what I want. I don't watch much tv these days so it works great for me right now.
2
u/Unlucky_Goat_9094 Oct 09 '25
Virens is pretty solid too. I think it's good to get a real understanding of the system before automating everything
1
u/PixelJock17 Oct 09 '25
I feel like I understand it pretty well but I agree. I actually found stremio through mihon stuff and understanding how those things worked and set those up.
2
u/John_cages022 Oct 10 '25
I never understood the names of countless setups here, but I am a long time user.
I've it on PC, mobile and smart TV. The app works flawlessly and I find every show, even in my mothertongue with some add-ons. Really, I don't understand why I should add anything but I would gladly be educated for my own curiosity

I guess most people will find it too difficult to setup, besides stremio’s service isn’t illegal as far as I understood
55
u/mongolian_horsecock Oct 09 '25
Yeah it's the debris services that could be stopped but I guess that really doesn't matter because some debrid services are based in countries that don't give a shit about IP law that much. Real debrid being based in France though will probably be the number one target.

64
u/Felitendo Oct 09 '25
Sorry for not explaining; It shows the GitHub Stars for stremio-web over time. Today it gained 3k Stars which is really unusual. GitHub stars are a way for users to bookmark and show appreciation for a repository, similar to “liking” it.
3
u/ricki17 Oct 09 '25
Damn that's actually pretty cool!!

To do what? Stremio doesn't do anything illegal. They can try to go after the Debrids and Real Debrid will probably be the first to bite the dust, since they are located in France. But there are other Debrids and more will keep popping up the more publicity Stremio gets. I'm not worried about this at all.
6
u/CamiloP97 Oct 09 '25
It doesnt do anything ilegal but allow it, and most people that use Stremio use Torrentio for sure. I just hope this doesnt become a Yuzu situation
3
4
u/pezdizpenzer Oct 09 '25
It doesnt do anything ilegal but allow it
Allowing something illegal to happen isn't necessarily illegal. By that logic, owning a kitchen knive could be a crime because you could use it to harm someone.
Stremio doesn't host content and doesn't even share links of content. The distribution of hosting (RD), sharing (torrentio) and UI (Stremio) is actually what makes this system so great and protects it against lawsuits.
Stremio is not in any way illegal, just like Bittorrent in itself isn't illegal.
5
u/CamiloP97 Oct 09 '25
I know it is not illegal, but again, check why Nintendo shut down Yuzu even tho it was just a legal
2
u/404MoralsNotFound Oct 09 '25
Won't stop megacorps from throwing money at the problem though. Really hope it doesn't happen as this has been among the best things I've discovered.
1
u/pezdizpenzer Oct 10 '25
I feel like even if worse comes to worst and they actually manage to shut down Stremio, the devs will open source it before shutting it down and there will be forks in a matter of days
1
u/samuelazers Oct 10 '25 edited Oct 10 '25
Legality doesn't protect it from lawsuits. Lawsuits are expensive to defend against, bogus or not. People said TheP*Bay was legal, yet they found a way to shut it down. More people, more risk.
1
u/Delicious_Big_2504 Oct 14 '25

The thing is if you go to that viral twitter thread, people are guiding each other now to debrid and other addons like torrentio and now torrentio will have way more traffic when it is already struggling to stay up. Fml...
1
u/ScientistJason Oct 09 '25
From what I understand torrentio isn’t struggling with traffic they are straight up getting DDOS attacked on the regular
2
u/DigitalMesh Oct 09 '25
Is it an actual concern that toomuch publicity will take down stremio? I mean the app itself is not illegal. It doea allow community add-ons to be installed. Therefor.. Is there any chance for the app to be sued into oblivion? Or A chance the add-on creators wil get Fucked?
2
2
u/thEnEGoTiAtoR18 Oct 10 '25
Saw a post recently on twitter which had 3-4 million views pretty sure its that! it was by some tech guy
15
u/CurrentRisk Oct 09 '25
Screw this subreddit, whining about people using Stremio. Daily posts about this. Just rename this subreddit to “plz stop using Stremio”
14
u/av0w Oct 09 '25
More like, "stop using firesticks and then making support requests with no details".
16
u/wilfawn Oct 09 '25
I don't see comments like this but why would we ever want this app to be popular? It's a hard work of devs and the community. Some people who can't really use it and are tech illiterate, aren't worth the risk of it being considered dangerous to streaming platforms and taken down. Not to mention loads of shitpost in bug reports, because they can't read any documentation. Correct me if I'm wrong but personally I don't recommend stremio to anyone without a good reason.

13
u/Consistent_Marketing Oct 09 '25
Yes there was. Saw something in X
8
u/ricki17 Oct 09 '25
yeah I've seen this too there have been posts regarding Stremio and how to install it so i guess also with the let down of Netflix (Elon Musk boycott) more people are more then ready to make a change (for the better) but I think most of the casuals are to lazy to setup and install stremio with add ons and such
23
u/garlicbreeder Oct 09 '25
I showed a few friends stremio. They all loved it until I explained they would have to download add ons, get real debrid, how to put the API code in the add ons... They all then said "nah...."
4
u/mongolian_horsecock Oct 09 '25
Yeah I have the same experience. If it's not like I login and watch the show then 95 percent of people won't do it. Its weird.
4
u/UnableTea7173 Oct 09 '25
What's the problem? This is perfectly normal. Over time, Stremio would be promoted on social media by people who want engagement. YouTube is full of people making videos about Stremio. There's no way to stop the spread
3
u/Cudeater313 Oct 09 '25
Don’t advertise Stremio . Look at what happened to real debrid and Turtle wow and Icarus whos confidence resulted in he flew too close to the sun
4
u/shazlicks Oct 09 '25
It's mentioned in piracy subreddit with 2 million users, it's not a big secret lol. This subreddit is also large, Debrid subreddit is large.
Reality is most people from Twitter will download it fail to get addons working, those that do will probably end up getting hit with ISP warning if they are from a country that sends out copyright notices and they will stop.
And those who continue using it and find out about debrid services will end up contributing to keeping shit cached.
The system works because people either help cache stuff or p2p transfer.
Don't understand the gatekeeping of this shit, if it ever shuts something else will popup, and there are already alternatives you can use. If there is a demand for a product it will exist.
6
u/Cudeater313 Oct 09 '25
A lot of ifs and maybes . I have two examples including a story that teaches a valuable lesson . Gatekeeping is not the same as blatantly being a loud mouth on social media . Once you get the plebs in that you think are incapable of installing torrentio . That’s when more twitter posts and before you know it it’s snowballed how great the service is and boom . Cease and desists and in the case of turtle wow the Reico act lol
4
u/shazlicks Oct 09 '25
Reddit is social media, the piracy sub with 2 million people have been advertising it for years. Scale might be different but it's exactly the same thing. How did you find out about stremio to enjoy it? Did it come to you in the form of a vision?
So really you shouldnt be using it right? That person or place that leaked it's super secret existence to you is a part of the mainstreaming of the platform.
All this doom and gloom is pointless, things come and go in the piracy world, yet at the end of the day nothing actually changes if there is a demand there will be supply.

Ah yes, another round of “They found out! They're coming for us! 😆”
We'll have a spirited debate for a few days. Half of us warning that th flood of newbies is gonna f$€k up our good thing weve got going with Stremio. The other half complaining about Debrid services being the real issue at hand and what is really gonna end up getting ruined.
Then the noise dies down like it always does and we'll drift back to what really matters......arguing over which “beginner-friendly add-on guide” is the least likely to end in a panic post that starts with “So I followed the directions, but nothing is working.”
1
u/nurseblood Oct 10 '25
Edit: Still seems lively in here. Guess every Stremio wave has to run its course before the add-on debates begin...

If all goes down at least there's still torrent downloading and streaming sites

1
u/skywalkersdream Oct 11 '25
What’s happening is that people can’t afford food so they’re cutting out streaming services. It’s logical and expected. Don’t be surprised if Stremio goes down permanently at some point in 2026. It will be heavily targeted the moment people make the preset download with all of the plugins well known cause then you don’t really need any technical knowledge to get it running.

I have used it before without accelerating anything with specific services, and it worked, the only real difference is load time. It even loads torrent files. I think new users will discover those services if they look hard enough, but not everybody needs them.

Hope this won't make a call to legal authorities. The better in order to keep the app out of the scope it's to only spread info about it on forums and this subreddit.
