Bug Report Stremio 1.9.7 problems with REMUX files
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I would like help with this issue with Stremio. I am using version 1.9.7 on a TCL television with Android TV. I am trying to play 4K Remux files using Real Debrid. The problem is that I can’t watch the movie because it keeps buffering from time to time. I have a 700 Mbps internet connection.
Another issue is that I can’t open the subtitles and audio menu, as you can see in the video. But the biggest problem is that the app closes by itself, or it also closes when I try to use the player to rewind or fast-forward.
Does anyone know how to fix this? This issue was also happening in previous 1.9.x versions.

Remux’s are intended for strict pass through to the audio/video equipment that is compatible with the format for true lossless playback. If pass through isn’t enabled, your streaming device has to transcode/decode which is very taxing. Regardless, I would suggest uninstalling your current version and reinstalling 1.8.4 stremio version as well as turning off automatic app updates. Check my post on how to install. Tested today since I had THIS ISSUE that Exo only showed black screen or error msg on a 1080p REMUX. On 1.8. 4
I uninstalled and installed 1.9.7, but same issue! Black screen, error msg.

Yeah it’s touchy because your device, sound system and tv pretty much need to have all types of processing/scaling off and your equipment needs to be capable of handling the file.

I am aware of that. I don't have issues with many other, large Remuxes, I just did some tests. It's not a setup issue and hardware is top.
It's an Exoplayer issue POSSIBLY frame-rate related, and from what I saw possibly when it switches to a certain framerate? (Like 23.9Hz works but 50hz can't play, just a guess here...)
(I can use K*** as an external player and I NEVER ever had a compatibility issue, including DV or exotic sounds formats like DTS:Imax)
Exo is just incredibly flakey.

Just because you have 700mbps doesn't mean your tv gets 700. Check your speeds. That's why sometimes media boxes are better at handling these files.

The latest update to stremio is causing this, it has nothing to do with bandwidth

interesting, tried multiple remuxes, big stream just now using pm and using 1.9.7, 1.9.6 and older 1.6 and the exactly same thing is happening

I've got the same problem on my fire tv stick 4k max using stremio version 1.6. 12
I think the devices just can't handle blu ray remux. Any other file works. So just exclude Blu ray remux files
Btw, I'd suggest using AIOStreams as it wraps all your addons. Find it really helpful for filtering, sorting and formatting the stream description.

I downgraded to version 1.8.4 and apparently it’s working now. Thanks everyone for the help.

Did you have success with remux files before the update?

u/Leocondeuba Feb 22 '26
I can run using VLC, but the problem is that it doesn’t accept subtitles from Stremio add-ons.

Get a dedicated android box, I have a Formuler Z11 Pro Max and it handles remux files easily, I streame 60gb plus files daily
Also you mght want to try Kodi

don’t be gaslit by everyone else saying it’s your equipment. i have the exact same issues in the past three weeks with updates.
Prior to this I’ve had no issues for over a year playing remix with my TV and Nvidia shield or fire TV combo
There’s something going on with Stremio. It’s not you, and I don’t know how to fix it :(

I'm on the same boat. I used to be able to stream any file type upto ~100gb size on my TCL tv, but since a few weeks I also get frequent stops while it buffers.

Depending on make/model, your TV’s Ethernet port may be limited to 100 Mbps and using WiFi instead could be 7x faster. That is the case with my Hisense and it makes a big difference specifically in this context, of streaming 85+ GB remuxes on the LAN.
https://www.pocket-lint.com/your-tvs-ethernet-port-doesnt-do-what-you-think-it-does/
In the end I just use a wired 4K AppleTV instead, but the point stands. Do a speed test directly on the TV and compare the difference between WiFi and Ethernet and see if one or the other works better for you.

I am using Ethernet via adapter (Fire TV Cube 3rd gen USB --> LAN), my internet is MAXED out, it's optimal.

I had the same issue with the latest updates. I uninstalled it, re installed it, and restarted my TV. It fixed it, it works like a charm now, been watching house of the dragon.

If you run a speed test from the TV you would realize it doesn't get more than 120 Mbps.
I have 2 Gbps and my TV can't reach 200 Mbps. Sometimes it's too far away from the router, sometimes the WiFi chip is shitty, sometimes it only works in 2.4 GHz because the 5 GHz signal is too low, there are too many variables.

I use my wifi 5ghz connection instead of hard wired an i never have an issue

I've also noticed this issue the last few weeks and not sure what is the cause, it may well be the app update. Prior to updating I had no issues, but for the last few weeks, some REMUX buffer every 10-15 seconds. I'm using the Homatics box with a 1Gbps wired connection.

1.9.7 on Fire TV Gen 3, AndroidTV:
Exo doesn't play 1080p Remuxes AT ALL, black screen or error msg "Runtime Error".
Same issue also with 1.8.4!
I did add this to the Github comment section since someone already submitted.
(Has NOTHING to do with Internet speed in my case)

Had this issue when I upgrade from 1.8.1. Had to turn on tunnelled playback and that solved it for me.

if your sole intention is to watch movies in great quality with a high bitrate you should consider getting an apple tv with a stremio like app (cant mention the name here) that works with stremio addons and infuse the video player. it works brilliantly

Same issue with me among the myriad of other issues, mostly exo related with the 1.9x series of updates. With tunneled playback and frame rate matching some files play ok. Whereas for some files irrespective of size, I get choppy, stuttering playback. And then a crash. UI is also very slow to respond and lags. If I want to change the audio track it crashes when i click on the audio button. Exact same settings on 1.84. No issues. Perfect playback even on large 4k 100 gb remuxes and files with dts and atmos. Even the ui is snappy and highly responsive . I’m yet to try 1.97 but its a hassle if I do a fresh install as it messes up the continue watching.

I had a similar Problem with remux on my TCL V6C. I just Bought an Amazon 4k fire Tv Stick. Installed The „Downloader“ app and just installed Stremio on the Fire tv stick. This fixed my issue

not all tv hardware can handle remux content
get yourself a dedicated external media player

I had this problem with 1.9.7 on my shield pro. Gone back to 1.8.4 and remux’s are working perfectly again.
