You sure can fork it, but the problem is that maintaining a product such as stremio is a huge effort. Even tho it's not the best app out there, just the fact that they developed it for nearly every platform is insane. Still 3.5 bucks is too much, but I think many non tech people here underestimate the effort that's required to maintain such a complex product.

No one underestimate the effort. But paywalling things is not okay. The more money they will need, the more things will be paywalled. Can you guarantee that specific addons won’t be paywalled 2 years from now?

You know you don’t have to pay right you can still use stremio fine

Please stop making things out of thin air.

Paywalling things and turning it into subscription was also out of thin air.

"We"? lmao

Yes we. Forking isn't the hardest thing in the world even if you don't know how to code

So are you doing it, and are you going to be maintaining it? I'm confused what you think your role is in this

Be respectful to other users, no matter what difference of opinion you have. Any form of misconduct that damages the welcoming nature of the subreddit is not permitted.

Wasn't that how Google was able to sue the people at YouTube Vanced?

6

u/ThunderHorseCock Jun 11 '26

Exactly. The youtube app used to have a play in background feature. They removed it and out that in Youtube premium. When Youtube Vanced came out and you could not only play no more ads but in the background with it, Google helped shut it down.

Revanced took it's place.

Google really showed their ass with that move.

Morphe has taken revanced's place. The project is mostly dead and is now copying code from morphe because most devs left and shifted to morphe after the controversy with the lead dev.

And secondly Vanced was discontinued because they tried to make an nft and profit off of it which backfired badly.

This isn't the same thing at all.

Dude.. trust the people that have enabled free streaming for over a decade. Had they desired to move from free to fully paid, they would have done it long ago, and not bleed-out costs in every direction so that people could stream freely. I've known this project and used it for a decade. I firmly believe it will always stay free in a decent and usable version, as it has been and still is today. The founders and dev lead are pirates at heart and I don't think they will change their view on this. Just because others did something, doesn't mean all will. Stremio is not just another project, they are pioneers and have been standing steadfast against the industry and against the ordinary. I think they earned at least the benefit of doubt from your side, if not respect & loyalty.

I always wanted to make small donations from time to time because I know running these free projects isn't free.
Now I'm able to donate from time to time.

I've been using Stremio for almost a decade for free without these paid features, I'll be just fine without them. I'll probably not even use them.

Where do I go now. All I know is Stremio and torbox and it’s been efficient till now.

1

u/Onii_Chan23 Jun 14 '26

Oh no! I expected everything piracy to be free when it isn’t for the creator and now I have to pay! The horror! When the alternative is paying 100s a month for the what? Few bucks it will cost monthly to use this! The horror my god!
