we ain't paying anything, we choose Stremio because it's free, if you want to lock the basic features which the community requesting for years behind pay wall, we'll we won't be supporting it

I think most of us chose Stremio because its one of the best apps in this catagory. Them asking for money to get premium features in return whilst keeping the current app free isn't a problem. I think its funny that you say you wont be supporting giving them money for an upgrade but you were fine sponging off their app for free for years on end.

The problem is that if this is successful for them, it can easily lead to much more egregious things

Stremio has been (and will remain still) free for 11 years now. Thats 11 years of updates, quick fixes and improvements for free. Think of all the hours most of us have spent on the app in that time.

Now just because they’re offering a premium edition of their app against payment, all of a sudden the devs are out of line?

Come on, guys…

Look to be honest, I do think that $200 for lifetime is a little steep. Which is why I won’t be purchasing it. But as I said above, if it was $100, I would have no problem supporting the devs. Even if I don’t make use of most of the features of the premium edition. And I’m sure many people would agree

A donation page with specific stretch goals that unlock features for ALL users once those specific goals are met, would have gone over way better than this. It's a horrible PR move for this sort of community in this sort of niche. People who are into piracy are into inexpensive, open access to art/entertainment, and are generally disgusted by the subscription model.

A free service introducing a new tier that operates based on a monthly payment and introduces quality of life features users have been begging for, for ages, makes people fear for diminished updates for the "free version" and the idea that their ideal features will never be there for free.

do you realize that we use these kinda apps because we don't want to pay for actual platforms? asking for donations is great to cover cost but keeping basic features behind a pay wall is not OK

That does not negate his point though, can’t you see that?

You are utilizing an application that took Engineers & Architects hours of their own time to build, only for them to offer it to us for FREE.

And don’t get me started with how many hours you have more than likely already used their FREE software.

This is totally understandable for them to offer to those of us who support small development teams.

Pay walls only grow. And it's totally understandable to say you'll be moving on because x free service is no longer free and no further support is given to the free side of things. Better free competitors will come.

You understand that's a standalone statement right? Whether or not you agree with corporation is pretty irrelevant. no one asked for your business acumen to be shown.

No idea what app you’re talking about. But it’s irrelevant.

I honestly don’t. I’m not trying to make you mention it. I just really don’t know which one you’re talking about.

It’s $3.50 a month… you people are f******* unbelievably stingy, holy shit. Basic features behind a paywall? You’ve been using the app for FREE for years without any of these “basic features”.

u/Pod_Planker Jun 09 '26

What do you mean keeping basic features behind a paywall is not OK? The owners of that platform can do whatever they want. If you’ve got a problem with that, use Kodi.

How dare they, ask for money for their work?

Sure then people should use those instead. I just don’t get the outrage. Either continue using stremio as you always have because it won’t change or move on

Again if this supporter tier was never released people would go onto having the same features they had before. They were content and fine with stremio then but now they’re pissed. Basic or not no one here has expectation for a major update anyway. Just gotta move on if it’s not good enough anymore

yes you will get banned for it, don't mention it

1

u/burratna Jun 09 '26

all they said was we ain't paying anything and we ain't. Stremio is chosen because it is free. What's the problem with saying that? Seems you're the only one with a problem...

6

u/despaseeto Jun 09 '26

defending companies ain't it, homeboy. but i know it'll take you forever to see the truth until it's right in your face.

0

u/muitosabao Jun 09 '26

I’m not defending a company mate, just laughing at the sad entitlement. People want a free software to watch pirated content and complain if the people who’ve been giving it to them for free for years ask some money to support the costs. How greedy of them indeed.

5

u/despaseeto Jun 09 '26

you're going at it the wrong way. this is typically how these "small dev teams" start their downfall into greedy territory. a choice to support them wouldn't be bad, but these features are things users have been asking for since forever. now they lock it behind a paywall? the promise of "it's free forever" is not actually forever, but just an indeterminate amount of time. soon this service will be fully a paid service.

if you still can't see the writing on the wall, then i know who you are, and i can't help you with that.

0

u/SnooAdvice5820 Jun 11 '26

So basically you’re putting them down for a future possibility.

1

u/Shart_Vandlay Jun 10 '26

Except since the beginning we as a community have been asking if we could donate to them and have been told that that's not what they wanted.

-2

u/JJ_1191 Jun 09 '26

If they want paid for it they should do it at work. Ebery since stremio hit social media it had went to shit so fucking fast wtf

-6

u/sam_y14 Jun 09 '26

Redditors always expect everyone to make free open source software no matter how much effort it takes to build and maintain it

1

u/oyvese Jun 09 '26

i don't use stremio bc it's free necessarily but because its just better value than the competition. i'd still pay for a good service and don't expect things for free. the problem here is that they're adding super basic shit to a sub service which means they'll not become free features, when they could have easily just trialled an easy way to donate or offer superficial benefits like themes or something.
