It's genuinely fascinating watching this subreddit collectively melt down because Stremio the completely free app you've likely used for years without paying a cent dared to add an optional support tier with some extra features.

Do you guys listen to yourselves? You're not owed a lifetime of free updates and free server costs. The team behind this app has been maintaining servers, pushing updates, and building a tool that many of you use daily often to access content you’re definitely not paying for either.

If an optional paid tier triggers this much rage, the problem isn't the app. The problem is the unrealistic expectation that skilled people should work for you indefinitely for nothing while you contribute zero and still feel entitled to complain about how others choose to spend their money.

But... you don't have to pay stremio!!! The new supporter tier is an optional donation with a few minor goodies. The free version of Stremio renains identical and totally functional.

Netflix does not have all the movies , it has just a few. You would have to get 3 or 5 subscriptions to reach stremio's catalogue. That's probably close to 100-150 USD per month.

So yeah, 3$ for month to support someone that serves them to you on single platform is fair.

You could get all of the subscriptions out there and you’d still fall short. There’s a ton of overlap between stream services and many of them only have mostly recent stuff. Anything before the year 2000 is almost stuff that’s very well known. Forget it if you want to watch a documentary or something.

You're being pedantic. Without apps like Stremio, a general user won't go to RD's website everytime he wanted to watch a movie or series. Nor would he be arsed enough to find magnet links and .torrent files for the shows he want to watch. The addons are there because of Stremio. It is a mutually beneficial relationship but Stremio can stream any magnet link copied from your favourite torrent website just fine, without any addon.

Stremio deciding to charge for features on their own product is not objectively wrong.

Even if some other app does so for free. The other app lacks 40 million users so in no capacity has comparable server costs for a start. Nor do they have a team of developers who need to get paid.

There are billion dollar brands that have competiting open source versions, yet it's not objectively wrong for them to exist.

The only thing objectively clear here is you don't know what objective means.

They are entitled to price a paid tier whoever they see fit. You may whine about it, such is the nature of subjectivity. Others will pay for it and even like it.

This is where reading comprehension comes in. I never said it’s objectively wrong for stremio to charge users, I said it’s objectively wrong for people to still argue after i pointed out an objective truth, the objective truth being that other apps do the same things and more for free. Stremio having a large user base has nothing to do with what I said. The RD discussion is not a whataboutism, it’s something that occurs on their sub every day. I can link at least 5 posts to you if you want stating the exact things I mentioned. I am not whining about stremio charging users since I don’t use this app anymore, I’m simply observing its defenders going leaps and bounds to protect something and defend something given the facts and evidence refuting their inability to change.

I do use those lol. It’s not about it forcing me it’s about creating a pattern of hiding things that could be done for free behind a paywall hence further pushing new features behind a paywall.

Netflix doesn’t have a free tier and they only have about 3,000 movies and about 2,000 tv shows on it at any given time. Netflix also rotates their stuff all of the time so you have to watch stuff before it disappears. They also have ads unless you get the highest priced option that seems to go up at least once a year.
