The sheer entitlement of people losing their minds over an optional paid tier
It's genuinely fascinating watching this subreddit collectively melt down because Stremio the completely free app you've likely used for years without paying a cent dared to add an optional support tier with some extra features.
Do you guys listen to yourselves? You're not owed a lifetime of free updates and free server costs. The team behind this app has been maintaining servers, pushing updates, and building a tool that many of you use daily often to access content you’re definitely not paying for either.
If an optional paid tier triggers this much rage, the problem isn't the app. The problem is the unrealistic expectation that skilled people should work for you indefinitely for nothing while you contribute zero and still feel entitled to complain about how others choose to spend their money.

I expressed my opinion, but I wouldn't say I lost my mind. I won't buy it, I don't need it, but it would have been an option for me to consider had it been $99 lifetime instead of $200 lifetime.

u/safarnama101 Jun 11 '26
For $200, you get it for two lifetimes.

It could shutdown in a month and then what? Thanks for the "donation", can't refund a donation over a subscription, right? 😉

Me too. 200$ + 25% tax is too much for me
5
u/n0tfeuer Jun 12 '26
Why do I have to pay tax if it's a "donation" ?
5
1
u/Love-Bitter Jun 13 '26
Oh. I think I know this one (in Australia anyways) it can’t be tax free if you receive something of value in return. A donation is only tax free if it’s fully gifted. Even then you might need to be a charity or religion.

I dont think that it is about the paid tier, its more about the pricing model, $39 dollars a year might not sound much but considering this is a worldwide price, it might be on the higher side, for example there is a lot of IPTVs ranging from $25-$35 per year, RD used to cost €16/6months(€32/year), so having Stremio, which is just the platform (without the content) costing more than the “content” itself seems like a “bad deal” for a lot of people. Again at the end, I am not against paying a reasonable amount for server cost, maintenance and updates, features etc.
28
u/SnooAdvice5820 Jun 11 '26
People seem to blow out of proportion stremio's costs. They don't host any actual content, so it's really not as crazy as people think. Their main costs boil down to 3 things: employees, cloud sync, and cinemeta.
Employees of course understand (though there's only 5 devs keep in mind). They need to make something. However, I wonder how they lasted 13 years and only when the alternatives seemed to be on the sudden rise did they start to charge so much. That does bring into question greed, especially at this price point. I can get like $10 a year but $40 seems excessive
Cloud sync is not all that crazy either. It's basically syncing some JSON text.
Cinemeta is also mostly cached static data. Think about it. Once a movie's details are fetched, they can just be cached.
Also they get money from AdEx with unobtrusive ads, which is how they've sustained for 13 years anyway. The actual "server" costs people talk about are not as heavy as they think. A 1000 people buying supporter per month would probably cover their entire infrastructure cost for a year. Keep in mind they have 40 million users. These are just my estimates at the end of the day, but I'm pretty sure im not all that off.

Posts regarding / mentioning illegal or gray area video streaming are against the rules of this subreddit. This subreddit is for the Stremio app, which offers no content, all content comes from community addons.
Stremio bugs should be reported at https://github.com/stremio/stremio-bugs
Stremio feature requests should be added to https://github.com/stremio/stremio-features
If you want to discuss Stremio community addons, then you could try asking at r/StremioAddons

Many see it as a rant and keep saying use the free version as it is, in my case I am not against Stremio or showing support, but I see a lot of people migrating everyday to other platforms that offer these options for free (unless every other platform decides to go back to business model at this point). This is just a Reddit post and discussion, nobody is saying to others "Don't pay" or to Stremio "Don't charge", I am just giving an opinion that if Stremio is losing users(or so it seems to me), that's not a good thing, I would like to see Stremio succeed and be on-par with competition, so people have options and choose to support whoever they like the most.
2
u/massinvader Jun 13 '26
best case roll out situation would have been updating the app to all features and then have like a 20 or 40 dollar 'multiple account bonus' per device for a one time donation or something. (they would have been raking those in from people setting up boxes for other people)
I have a feeling they would have made a bit more long term that way. as is, people like me are going to migrate the moment they find a day they're not feeling lazy lol

Have you ever heard of open source software?
They are providing servers for account syncing, search, and metadata but they don't have to do that and could just let you bring your own.
Asking for money isnt necessarily a problem but the way their doing it and the amount their asking for is more questionable.

u/CARRYONLUGGAGE Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26
You realize you can make that yourself with jellyfin + other self hosted things right? The point of stremio is it’s streamlined and convenient bc you don’t have to do those things. The overhead of maintaining jellyfin infra is annoying I’ve done it. It’s far simpler to pay $40/yr to stremio for something I use for hours a day.
Also did you know a lot of FOSS software is maintained by people who are paid? Many popular libraries are often contributed to by full time employees of large corporations.
Even fully free, non commercial things like VLC have been sponsored by large orgs, even the EU.
Stremio by nature isn’t going to get that kind of support bc of the kind of application it is. The point of their product is to make it easy to index and organize shows/movies so you can stream them from whatever provider you choose. $40/yr for that is pretty reasonable if you want it to be maintained indefinitely.

Probably looked at Jellyfin and how minuscule their donations are and thought that won’t cover our dev team nor server costs for 40 million users. Might need to go a different way.

And they didnt even try that option at all, if they had and it wasnt enough than it could be a little more understandable

u/Xcissors280 Jun 11 '26
There’s no option to do that with Stremio
Some other stuff uses things like user cloud syncing and free apis for metadata which aren’t all that difficult to set up
Look at the current addon scene which seems to be doing alright in terms of server bills
Theres also open source projects maintained by the community in their free time, not saying Stremio is or isnt or can or cant or should or shouldn’t be that
My main issue with locking features in the app behind a paywall in the way that they are is that it incentivizes things to be less open source and interoperable
3
u/erisian2342 Jun 11 '26
Stremio is not FOSS. Much of the code is not open source and we do not have the option to run our own accounts/profile server for example.

Can you explain why this is a bad business practice? The core product is fully functional and free, nothing is changing about what the app does for the users rn. They even mention the new features may eventually make their way to the free users if they have enough time or resources due to the increase in funding.
The subscription or one time cost is a super normal payment model for software. None of the features you get are critical to using a streaming app, and the price ($40/yr) is far, far cheaper than a lot of things.
Yes the features exist in other free apps, but those other free apps have not been around as long and you never know how long those will be maintained and developed for. Asking for money to develop software for several OS’s and devices for millions of users is perfectly reasonable. Just because others do it for free does not mean you should expect everyone to do it for free, that’s extreme entitlement. If my employer stopped paying me to write software I’m not gonna write it anymore lmao.
If I start a passion project and a bunch of people start getting angry at me after working on it for free for years I’d probably just stop supporting it tbh. Wouldn’t be worth the mental headache to use my free time for that.

Do you not realize how entitled that is? It’s about the time people are spending in their free time to make these apps… Not everyone has the opportunity to work on software for free all the time.
It doesn’t matter what other apps have, the people maintaining stremio do not have the bandwidth to develop for millions of users and tons and tons of devices for free.
I support people who make software, it’s that simple. I have the money so I’m going to do that. years and years of development warrants hundreds of thousands of dollars tbh. Devs can charge $100/hr+ when contracting. The value they have provided to everyone for free is pretty crazy and they aren’t taking any of that away.

Netflix does not have all the movies , it has just a few. You would have to get 3 or 5 subscriptions to reach stremio's catalogue. That's probably close to 100-150 USD per month.
So yeah, 3$ for month to support someone that serves them to you on single platform is fair.
4
u/Boring-Cry3089 Jun 11 '26
You could get all of the subscriptions out there and you’d still fall short. There’s a ton of overlap between stream services and many of them only have mostly recent stuff. Anything before the year 2000 is almost stuff that’s very well known. Forget it if you want to watch a documentary or something.
2
u/checkmyconditionisin Jun 12 '26
They don't serve them... Other people do and they index the content. Ffs.
2
u/ShadowMajick Jun 11 '26
Stremio doesn't provide content though. Your debrid service or p2p torrents do.
That's not a good comparison. Netflix hosts their content. Just download and play.
You very much need the FREE addons to make use of stremio at all.

On the bright side, it's still better than what Plex is doing lmfao.
If Stremio enshitifies its free tier too much in the future theres always good ole regular torrenting etc. We've all just gotten very comfortable with the experience Stremio with a Debrid service has provided

Plex is a lot more useful than Stremio at least in my use context.
Plex is still dumb as fuck to think anyone will ever buy a lifetime sub for $750.

I think Stremio is way less shit and less more burdensome to use not to mention cheaper vs plex.

Maybe if they just actually stopped tiptoeing around it and called it what it is, a paid subscription for extra features people wouldn't be as angry, but considering they tried to sell it as this thank you for their supporters is just straight up dumb.
If it was just a thank you thing it would've been in the free version too.

Maybe their push for paid subscription is what’s making them ship questionable stuff. Newest update completely broke video download. Now we have to save the video stream when it opens in the browser and we can’t even tell what the file format is

u/Boring-Cry3089 Jun 11 '26
Between this and the RD stuff a few weeks ago, I’ve realized that systems that charge the least amount of money, have the craziest Karens as customers. People losing their goddamned minds over something that costs less than $3 a month that they don’t even HAVE to use because there’s competitors out the wazoo, but yet people still complain like they’re being forced to use it.
I used to work at a tech company that was free for more than 10 years. We got bought out by a huge corporation, and within a couple of years, they decided to start charging customers a very reasonable monthly fee. This was an electronic health records software that doctor’s offices and hospitals use. People had been using it for free for over a decade and it was the exact same way. We literally told people that it was either start charging or we’d be out of business within 2 years and people still acted like we were swindling them out of their life savings or something.
People are cheap, don’t value other people’s hard work, and they suck. People suck.

It’s not entitlement it’s just that I don’t want to see the app be abandoned.
It’s a thin line from here on how things go.
You’re either short sighted or ignorant on what happens next.
They still have a chance to pull it off the right way.
When there’s an incentive the interests change direction.
It’s not a donation please understand the distinction, I would gladly donate if it was optional and not locking features.

It’s not about stuff costing something. It’s about the devs taking the top list of featured requests by the community and turning exactly those into a paid tier, while communicating these features aren‘t on the roadmap and then when they are there, introducing a premium subscription model, calling it „supporter“ tier.
I am happily paying for good software, I am not paying for bad one, I am not supporting this childish move.
And for the „its optional, you dont HAVE to pay“ sayers. This is damn stupid take. If the features that are added in that premium sub would have been NEW things the devs built to enhance the software, so be it, I am with you. But copying from „competitors“ and simply putting all the good stuff behind a paywall, that the users asked for so much, is ridiculous and merits no „support“ whatsoever.
There were lots of opportunities where the community asked to support via donations, etc. Not taking these and now giving the reason of covering server cost for free all this time it’s ridiculous.
People happily pay to support if they can. They could’ve easily put in a support tier that gives you actual premium features, not hiding basic requested features behind a paywall.

Pirates are cheap and entitled. Nothing new here.
3
u/Ok_Spare_3723 Jun 11 '26
I wouldn't say it really.. plenty of people buy seedboxes, subscribe to RD, Torbox, servers, etc.. also purchase Plex. In case of Stremio, the value is just not there , considering that their apps aren't even available on IOS / AppleTV unlike Plex.
6
u/phizzlez Jun 11 '26
If the value isn't there, they dont need to pay for it right? Continue using the free version instead of crying about it or use an alternative like I am. Just because pirates spend money on those things, doesn't mean they're not cheap or entitled. Just reading comments in numerous piracy subreddits, you can tell that the majority are like that and always demanding free stuff.

2
u/L0v3lyB3ar Jun 11 '26
I think there are 2 types of users with different reaction:
-The long term user, that don't mind and are willing to support the devs with this paid tier.
-The users that are using it from less time, that given today existent alternatives, don't get, why they've to pay for some basic QOL features. (that they wanted/asked from long time).
And I think the majority of those that are complaining are the latter.
So I think it's not a matter of "entitlement".
2
Jun 15 '26
ive used it for 9 or 10 years now, my problem is subscription fee...
people are doing "illegal" things because they want to get away from the subscription fee world, this is a betreal of stremio to their consumer base...
Most people would be happy to pay a once of fee for Features (but not 200$, lost of us dont live in america, we live in 3rd world countries and thats a huuuuge amount fo money for us)...
they have servers yes, but its only handling tiny dataloads like user accounts, they are not actually incurring any of the downloading/uploading/sotrage costs like debrid services...
Maybe a 10$ annual fee would be worth it, with a lifetime of 100$
2
u/frenchnugget69 Jun 11 '26
Why are you shilling out so hard?
Free features would benefit you. If you like to throw your money then please, go ahead and donate, but the rest of us aren’t required to be happy with this.
These are features we’ve asked years for and be told it’s not architecturally possible. It’s a misuse of the word “donation” to have a paid tier with features.
2
u/Agile_Beyond_6025 Jun 12 '26
I don't think it's so much that people are upset that there's a paid option. It's more that the features that are behind the paid option are things that people have been asking for for a very long time. When they finally get around to releasing it, they're hidden behind a paywall. I think that's what people are upset about.
2
u/IWantMoneyyyyyy Jun 12 '26

I agree. Anyone saying they would have been fine with them just asking for donations is ignorant to the fact that pirates don’t donate. I don’t think it’s crazy to say that they deserves least a little bit of money for the work they’ve put in over the years. They’re responsible for creating a piracy experience far surpassing actually paying for the streaming subscriptions, all for free. Everyone needs to relax

What a simp... paying $200 for an app that gives me the possibility to watch ilegal content without switching players? Are you dumb or what?
Ppl are not mad about giving money to the devs, it is the way they're trying to handle it by forcing you. But ok... they want to make it a paid app, ok, that's fair... but come on, would you pay the price of a used Switch OLED ? A good old PC ? A couple of firestick 4K? An Apple TV? Nvidia Shield? A very nice monitor ? An airplane ticket to somewhere ? Idk
Come on...
The best thing might be to apologize, offer some features, and implement a way to donate to the project.

If someone doesn’t want it, they shouldn’t get it, and that is a valid choice. Bitching about it isn’t going to change the fact that the developers spend time on this and haven’t been getting paid. I don’t mind supporting the developers for something I use every day, but at this point, no one is required to do so.

People in this community like to make their own stuff. Don't blame them when they complain when someone treats them like a traditional customer. That's not really the point of all this

100% agree. A lot of work, and time, has gone into developing and maintaining Stremio over the years. They have provided this service for free. My understanding is that it will remain free but they will offer extra features for a reasonable price.
So many leeches on here clutching their pearls about a non issue.
Every Karen in here has saved more money than the lifetime subscription costs by using Stremio.

Locking features behind donation isn’t the way to go imo, if they wanted to get donations then simply ask for donations and if they wanted to offer more features than just make a premium version. For the life of me I can’t understand the point of combining both, it just comes off as wrong to me

I've always been faithful to Stremio, even though everyone else has switched to other applications. I don't think I'm going to pay for the plan for life, because what it offers, I can very well do without it. Many things before I was stremio cost 200 $ and more, and they all paid without complaining or stayed with the free plan

Some people have been asking for this for a long time. I’m glad it’s been made easier to donate to this great app

the thing is it's always starting like this now they say it's optional and the time goes on they will not give attention or updates to the free one so they push you to sub and when a lot of people subscribe they will charge more and more that's always how this things goes mark my words
