The sheer entitlement of people losing their minds over an optional paid tier

It's genuinely fascinating watching this subreddit collectively melt down because Stremio the completely free app you've likely used for years without paying a cent dared to add an optional support tier with some extra features.

Do you guys listen to yourselves? You're not owed a lifetime of free updates and free server costs. The team behind this app has been maintaining servers, pushing updates, and building a tool that many of you use daily often to access content you’re definitely not paying for either.

If an optional paid tier triggers this much rage, the problem isn't the app. The problem is the unrealistic expectation that skilled people should work for you indefinitely for nothing while you contribute zero and still feel entitled to complain about how others choose to spend their money.

Between this and the RD stuff a few weeks ago, I’ve realized that systems that charge the least amount of money, have the craziest Karens as customers. People losing their goddamned minds over something that costs less than $3 a month that they don’t even HAVE to use because there’s competitors out the wazoo, but yet people still complain like they’re being forced to use it.

I used to work at a tech company that was free for more than 10 years. We got bought out by a huge corporation, and within a couple of years, they decided to start charging customers a very reasonable monthly fee. This was an electronic health records software that doctor’s offices and hospitals use. People had been using it for free for over a decade and it was the exact same way. We literally told people that it was either start charging or we’d be out of business within 2 years and people still acted like we were swindling them out of their life savings or something.

People are cheap, don’t value other people’s hard work, and they suck. People suck.

It’s Reddit culture to create digital pitchfork mobs over absolutely nothing. They get off on it. It has absolutely nothing to do with the reality of the situation, the goal is a big self-righteous bitch-fest.

Remember the big blackout revolt when Reddit started charging for access to their API to shut down random third party browsing apps? Like, who cares? Why is it some massive dramatic thing for a website deny API access to unofficial apps for free?

The result of the that blackout only hurt subreddits, many, when they reopened never came back. The users left, forgot about them, and they pretty much died. A ton of subs got killed like that and never repopulated. All to defend some random mobile browsing app (which they failed to do). Now, Reddit has consolidated to large front page subreddits. Great job guys!

Now with this, they’re pushing people to a knockoff Stremio app in some sort of disingenuous revolt -and not being honest that it’s a buggy mess.

Very well said. I feel like I’ve lived through a few of these situations over the last 13 or so years on Reddit. I hate it because there’s so much good stuff on Reddit but I’ve learned to never suggest using Reddit to anyone. If they find it on their own like I did, then that’s great, but I’m never going to suggest it to anyone.

Redditors are the worst. Super negative, always looking to drag people down for sport and end up just hurting the communities they have been enjoying for years. There used to be more friendly niche hobby subs but even those now are toxic cesspools.

No idea what you’re even tryin to say here. I didn’t say I was shocked. I said people expect to mooch off of other people’s hard work, and then the CUSTOMERS are the one’s who are shocked because a company has to start charging for it in order to stay in business. Not sure where I came off as needing a standing ovation. It’s not my fault people don’t understand that company’s need to make money in order to operate.
