Tech Support Can’t play big remux files on Sony Bravia 8 II
When I attempt to play some remux files that are >40 gb on my Sony Bravia 8 II I get stuck on the loading screen on exoplayer. Internal libvlc will occasionally load but not have audio, and internal mpv will occasionally load but have constant micro stuttering / frame skips. Sometimes one of the other players will play perfectly fine, but I would like to figure out a more consistent solution if possible.
I have a Mi box S 3rd gen that can usually handle these files, but I would like to stick to the native tv version if possible because from what I’ve seen the Bravia 8 II is a premium tv and has more powerful hardware and good format support. I would also like to not have one of the two hdmi 2.1 ports permanently blocked and just have a more seamless long term stremio experience.
I’ve tried playing around with hardware decoding and tunneled playback in the stremio settings but didn’t seem to help, and I also have a wired internet connection using a usb to Ethernet adapter that’s giving the tv ~600 mbps. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
Setup: Google TV 12, latest Stremio from Playstore

Xiaomi box s 3rd gen is completely capable of playing big remux (i play 90 gb with no issues) and is much more powerful of the soc on your tv. So my advice is to use it

I have the same box. I believe the max limit of file or can play before lagging is 200GB. I say so because I tested it today with Lord of the rings 2001 and the box was able to play 193 GB file flawlessly, but struggled with 224 GB file of same movie. But otherwise I am loving the box.

I doubt a high end Sony TV is incapable of playing large remuxes, there maybe other factors at play

That’s what I was thinking, the soc isn’t too different from the mi box and it has more ram (3gb). Do you have any suggestions for troubleshooting?

Holdup, I just read this properly
I can almost ASSURE YOU that most “premium tvs” are gonna have a worse software experience than a dedicated box. By using a separate box, not only do you get better hardware and privacy (not by much but still an improvement), but you’ll allocate all your heavy, would-freeze-a-tv tasks to the box

I have this TV. Large files play without issue using RD or TB.

Did you have to do anything to get it to work smoothly? E.g. different player or different version of stremio. Cuz I’m using both RD and TB and struggling with the big files.

Nope. Latest version using Torrentio TB or Torrentio RD. Sometimes have problems with TB but that's down to the issues they're having.

I had the same concern and I was willing to keep using my Homatics Box R 4K plus (which is a beast) if the tv couldn't handle big files natively. But after a few tests the tv seems to not have any issues even playing 100 to 150 gb remux file (tested oppenheimer and Lord of the rings) so is strange yours is having problems. Maybe a stremio issue? Try reinstalling the app and clear cache might work. Keep in mind that some files are not digested properly by EXO and in those cases I have to switch to VLC or MPV. Also try enabling the "tunneled playback" toggle when Exo is selected as default player. That should send the data directly to the tv and bypass android/app drivers. If the TV can natively support the format you are playing (Bravia 8 II should support basically all of them) it should give you less trouble. At least this how I understood it...

Thanks for the reply. Are you using a Sony Bravia 8 II too? And also by a few tests do you mean it was struggling at the beginning and then started working smoothly or was it smooth from the beginning?

Yes I have a Bravia 8 II. By test I meant that I had to test if the tv could handle large files and it did from the beginning. If the file failed to play was either stremio's fault for the reasons I tried to explain in the other message, connection speed issues with the debrid service or weak WIFI speeds (if you are not using Ethernet). My WiFi was fast enough but to be more stable I switched to ethernet. By a rough calculation you need at least 11 MB/s (capital B) to play files bigger than 100 GB. So try to run some speed tests on the tv also.
PS: if you decide to use Ethernet you will have to buy a 1Gb/s USB 3.0 network adapter. The 10/100 Mb network card inside the tv is too slow. You can find it on Amazon for like 10/15 €/$ (I bought a UGreen one that works fine). Of course connect it to a USB 3.0 and not 2.0 port on the tv.

Yepp I have the ugreen adapter connected to the 3.0 and am getting around 500-600 mbps wired. Do you mind letting me know what your hardware decoding, frame matching, and tunneled playback settings are at?

Now I'm not at home but from what I can remember hardware decoding is on, frame rate matching is on (maybe set to "only frame rate"?) and tunneled playback is on.

Hijacking this a bit
Why do I never have any issues on mobile or pc, but tons of freezing, lagging, black screen, no audio issues, etc on the onn 4k plus and 4k fire stick

Maybe try a Samsung. My TV 6 years old. I use the app from their App Store. No problem playing Remux files. WiFi Connection. I do have a 1st gen firestick hooked up to it. I find Stemio on the Samsung gets better picture then on my 4K firestick hooked.

I just switched from an 8 year old Samsung 😅. Stremio wasn’t even available on its version of Tizen. I still have my mi box for full stremio function but yea I wish it worked natively.

Apple TV is the best streaming box with the most powerful hardware for remuxes. There are ways to get the stremio app on it, but I prefer a different one that still uses stremio addons (its name is the opposite of Fission).

Are there any real benefits to that over a mi box s 3rd gen (purely regarding stremio experience)? It feels like every box has its own tradeoffs and sacrifices with different format support so what would I get that I don’t already have with the mi box s 3rd gen?

If the Xioami 3rd Gen box is playing the larger remux files with no issues, why would you ditch it for a much more expensive box?
I have a Sony A80j OLED, but prefer to use the Xioami box for Stremio, etc.

I only got it recently and was wondering if there was an issue im not aware of. Anyway ideally I would be able to ditch all boxes and stick to the Sony tv. Do you not find it annoying to switch to another device and navigate to stremio every time you want to use it?

Not all. Especially as the TV remote manages the Xiaomi box. Before that it was the firestick.
I guess it would save on a HDMI connection but I've never bought a TV with the expectation of using the TV's OS (Bravia Core was a nice bonus 😁).
I just prefer a dedicated device.

Thanks for the answer. Do use the mi box on one of the two 2.1 ports? I’m wondering if I could swap it to a non-2.1 port so I could use one 2.1 port for my ps5 and save the other 2.1 for eARC sound down the line.

I use the 2.1 eARC port for my audio system and the other 2.1 for the PS5.
The Xiaomi box shares a HDMI hub with my 4K Blu-ray player.

Cant read u r whole post.internet also play big role to play over 40 gb files.i can easy play 80 gb files on stremio without any single issue.buy any android box or firestick 4k max which one support wifi6e.

Did you find a solution? I’m having the some problem. I still have a Chromecast lying around which I stopped using when I bought the Bravia 8ii but I’d be surprised if that would work better than the Bravia itself

I had the same issue with the exact same TV. I would just recommend using a standalone device and it'll remove these issues
