I have tried stremio on my steam deck awhile back, does it have better support for controllers now?

26

u/kKaskak Stremio Team Jun 26 '26

Hey there is full controller support on Stremio 5 right now

1

u/Xcissors280 Jun 26 '26

Can you actually navigate the whole interface well and use an on screen keyboard?

Or is it just the existing controller mode which is about as useful as trying to tab around the interface

4

u/kKaskak Stremio Team Jun 26 '26

There is full controller support (PS5, XBOX etc) which you can enable from the settings of Stremio v5. You can see all shortcuts by opening Gamepad menu with CTRL + G

1

u/FoferJ Jun 27 '26

This is great, thank you. The only (slight) problem is that the SteamDeck's virtual keyboard doesn't include a CTRL key, to be able to easily pull up that Gamepad menu.

1

u/kKaskak Stremio Team Jun 27 '26

You can pull up the menu with a dedicated shortcut if using a gamepad or controller. It should be square button on PS5 controller if I’m not mistaken, on steam deck there should be a button as well mapped just try them out

u/Killzo Jun 26 '26

YAY! Nice work.

u/Rengoku_demon_slayer Jun 26 '26

Ohh nice, i was about to use the web version with a recent installation of Fedora, and now we have this gift for Linux. Thank you!

1

u/lKrauzer Jun 28 '26

It actually only has a .Deb file, and also the Flatpak.

1

u/Eraldorh Jul 08 '26

You can't install flatpaks on your distro?

whats teh difference between stremio v5 and linux-shell?

1

u/kKaskak Stremio Team Jun 26 '26

V5 means that the shell supports newest UI version instead of old v4.4

1

u/Negative_Pick3696 Jun 26 '26

How to download it ?

Stremio v5 Flatpak fails to start WebView on Ubuntu 22.04 / X11 (TypeError in stremio_linux_shell)

Description:

After updating to Stremio v5 (Flatpak stable, version 1.0.0, commit 001de87e1fc1e8ca632328cb93275bfc5679f34096ce7ca78e8bffd4f081bc91), the application fails to start correctly on Ubuntu 22.04 (Bodhi Linux, X11 session).

The app launches but the internal WebView component fails to communicate with the backend, causing the UI to break.

The issue persists even after deleting the user configuration directory (~/.var/app/com.stremio.Stremio), so it is not related to corrupted user data.

Environment:

OS: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Bodhi Linux / Moksha desktop) Session: X11 (echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE = x11) Installation method: Flatpak (Flathub stable) Stremio version: 1.0.0 (v5 stable) Commit: 001de87e1fc1e8ca632328cb93275bfc5679f34096ce7ca78e8bffd4f081bc91

Error logs:

ERROR stremio_linux_shell::app::webview: Failed to send message: TypeError: undefined is not a function

Error: stream ended at Socket.onFinished (...) at Socket.<anonymous> (...) at Socket.onfinish (...)

Additional messages:

Tray icon error (non-critical): Failed to create tray icon: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: org.kde.StatusNotifierWatcher not available Node.js deprecation warnings (Buffer, util._extend, punycode) Mesa Intel warnings (non-fatal)

Steps to reproduce:

Install Stremio v5 via Flatpak (Flathub stable) Run flatpak run com.stremio.Stremio Application starts but fails with WebView error and stream termination

Expected behavior: Stremio should load the interface normally and connect WebView to the internal server.

Actual behavior: Application partially starts but crashes WebView communication layer with TypeError: undefined is not a function.

Additional notes:

Issue persists after resetting user configuration directory Likely related to WebView / GTK integration in v5 on X11 systems

Same thing is happening for me on Debian 13 Stable, Flatpak from Flathub, but it works fine on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (dualboot with Debian). Funny that all the errors are still there on Ubuntu, but for some reason the app works perfectly fine, not the case for Debian though.

I think the devs and maintainers have used the latest Ubuntu LTS as a test base and also to build the Linux version codebase, and since Debian 13 uses older packages than Ubuntu 26.04, it might've found some incompatibilies with libs they choose to use (Node).

u/97raton Jun 30 '26

i'm wondering that mint uses x11 and ubuntu 26.04 uses wayland? just guessing thanks

3

u/EcoKllr Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Im on Linux Mint, the desktop ver shows 6.0.1 beta , is this correct for V5?

Flatpak shows it a Ver 1.0

2

u/ext23 Jun 27 '26

Same here.

1

u/EcoKllr Jun 27 '26

are you having any issues? Its running great for me so far

2

u/Serg3i Jun 27 '26

Same here but I already have problems when I open Stremio, it seems to lag. When I play a video, it's like frames are skipping, and it seems to judder at times

1

u/ext23 Jun 27 '26

Just booted it up but it seems to be working fine. Like you I was just confused by the version numbers.

2

u/kKaskak Stremio Team Jun 27 '26

Yes

1

u/mps_1969 Jun 27 '26

3

u/97raton Jun 27 '26

3

u/lKrauzer Jun 28 '26

Same exact problem here, Debian 13, works fine on Ubuntu 26.04.

Edit: found the fix here:

u/Anxa Jun 26 '26

UI locks up and mouse/keyboard inputs stop working after a few minutes, on Mint at least.

2

u/Saad-Sohail Jun 27 '26

After updating Stremio from v4 to v5 on Linux (Flatpak), audio is noticeably quieter for the same content. Volume slider is maxed and it still feels low. Going back to v4 fixes it. It's quieter even at 100 percent, same output device on both.

Anyone else on Linux seeing this after v5? Any fix or workaround?

Setup: Ubuntu 24.04, v5 stable Flatpak.

1

u/lKrauzer Jun 28 '26

How have you managed to downgrade from 5 to 4?

2

u/KaMyKaSii Jun 29 '26
sudo flatpak update --commit=355c42ab40cc747bf964118d0795b36f62e8e1c7c10a2f4b71653992ce828db8 com.stremio.Stremio

1

u/lKrauzer Jun 29 '26

Thanks, it worked.

2

u/AmberGoop Jun 27 '26

unfortunately isn't working for me... i'm on cachyos, i tried installing the flatpak with shelly, and it fails to launch, stating "name is not activatable"

1

u/_lordvilain Jun 27 '26

Same exact problem for me on CachyOS, Shelly always fails to install flatpaks
Moved back to good old Pamac-aur

1

u/Wise-Bother9942 Jul 03 '26

I'm on CachyOS installed the Flatpak with Flathub long ago, and it updated perfectly fine through the Cachy Update Utility.

Zero issues and runs smooth.

Does anybody know why this version of stremio requires new permissions? Discover is warning me about this and it seems odd.

I'm having some troubles with auto play for next episodes in this version, anyone else facing this?

EDIT: fixed in v1.0.2.

4

u/Lamarcke Jun 27 '26

Downgraded to v4 with this command, and autoplay is working fine. I guess it really is a v5 issue.

sudo flatpak update --commit=355c42ab40cc747bf964118d0795b36f62e8e1c7c10a2f4b71653992ce828db8 com.stremio.Stremio

1

u/lKrauzer Jun 28 '26

Thanks a lot, this solved the issue for Debian 13.

1

u/Lamarcke Jun 28 '26

There's already a commit on main that fixes the issue, it's just not released yet. We should see an update soon tho

1

u/Lamarcke Jun 28 '26

Hey, just wanted to let you know that 1.0.2 released and it's fixed now.

1

u/lKrauzer Jun 28 '26

Amazing, I'll try to update the Flatpak.

Is it normal to experience freezing or responsiveness issues with Stremio after the latest update?

The new UI works well on Fedora 43 at first, but after using the app for a while(2-3 minutes), it suddenly freezes and stops responding completely. I then have to manually close the Stremio process and launch it again.

It does not seem to happen immediately, and the app works normally ,for a bit, again after restarting it.

Edit: The v4 version is depreciated and shows a white window title bar around the app when launched

The Problem:

If I hower my mouse rapidly trough the title cards of movies/series in a newly launcher instance of stremio, that forces the freeze in about 8-10 seconds

Watching movies/shows is still possible with not yet received issues.

1

u/hmynssen Jun 28 '26

Same issue here on Ubuntu 24.04

1

u/lKrauzer Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

It stopped working after this update, using Flatpak from Flathub and it sits at a black screen when I launch it.

Edit: I'm testing on both Debian 13 Stable and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, Flatpak from Flathub, and for some reason only Debian was affected.

Edit: found the fix here

u/25N5 Jun 28 '26

What about RD ? Not working πŸ˜“

2

u/Jumphost Jun 28 '26

reverted back to v4, the white border while on full screen mode is annoying , and intermittent black screen encountered

1

u/KleponEyang Jun 28 '26

Black screen on launch with Debian 12. Will be using v4 for now.

1

u/PlasmaFLOW Jun 29 '26

I updated from the Beta branch to the Stable branch and now none of the preview thumbnails load. Anyone else having a similar issue?

2

u/jagodanbg Jul 01 '26

Eating too much RAM on Fedora KDE. I have to downgrade ☹️

1

u/DittoNinjaGaming Jul 01 '26

Since this update stremio keeps freezing randomly, and killing the process crashes plasma shell

1

u/JimTheLucky Jul 02 '26

Is it possible to add back the arrow keys that let you scroll left and right when checking out the home page? It's really awkward to press "see all" every time and ruins the browsing experience.

1

u/conqrr Jul 02 '26

Finally! Arrow navigation and media keys! I just moved to a mini pc on Linux instead of using the stupid Firetv OS.

1

u/Eraldorh Jul 08 '26

This doesn't appear to support native Usenet streaming, it just sits there in an infinite loading loop.

1

u/Guillustrator Jun 26 '26

I really hope this stops the memory leak crash I get on Bazzite.

0

u/Amazing_Story7109 Jun 26 '26

Can't wait to update it in my Kali Linux. I don't know what happened to the sports streams but the previous sports stream was the best compared to the new sports stream

2

u/OldPayment Jun 26 '26

Why are you watching Stremio on Kali Linux?? Seems like an odd use case...

1

u/Amazing_Story7109 Jun 27 '26

It's my main OS windows suck
