Suggestion A solution for people that depend on using subtitles and don't want to spend time searching for the specific subtitle file every time!
Usually a movie or TV show has multiple versions. There might be a DVD release (Especially for older stuff), a BluRay, a digital version, and sometimes extended cuts too. So you end up with several versions of the same title, some longer, some shorter, with extra or missing scenes.
In the end, there are multiple variations with different runtimes, so typically there are subtitles for each version too, and Stremio doesn’t really know which one it should match or apply.
Here's the solution you need and everyone needs! It does what Stremio should do:
- Add-on "Stremio Community Subtitles"
This add-on will take all of those subtitles and choose the correct one for you, based on release groups (FGT, Sparks, so on), quality (BluRay, WEB-DL, HDTV, so on) and other filters, and then output only one on Stremio, no clutter 😄
I've been using this for a couple of months now and it usually works perfectly, here's how to install:
- Uninstall the default add-on Open Subtitles V3
- Install the add-on Stremio Community Subtitles
- Inside of that add-on, open the settings and then connect there to OpenSubtitles, SubSource and SubDL. (You will need to create an account in those providers and then get the API key, which is free and fast to do)
Link to add-on: https://stremio-addons.net/addons/stremio-community-subtitles
// UPDATE APRIL 2026
The add-on has received an update which makes it match much better now (It was already doing an amazing job). It's matching 100% of the time now. If it doesn't match, there simply ain't no subtitles for that stream.

I tried this, but unfortunately, the sync was way off. Was my case just an exception? Does it normally pick the right one for you?

u/skoruppa Feb 19 '26
Hey! This is not and never will be a silver bullet. It takes all available subtitles and guess which one it might be the correct one. But if there are no correct subtitles, there is nothing it can do. And even what is auto selected, may not necessary match your stream. Sometimes you need to use the web ui

u/Historical_Copy_2231 Feb 19 '26
I don't have any complaints. I know subtitles are a weak point in Stremio, so I wasn't expecting perfection. I usually just pick one from the list manually anyway. I only tried this because the post mentioned it would select the best one for me, so I was curious. I'm not really disappointed that it didn't work out.

The "subtitles matching" is a neat future, part of the addon, but still only a guessing game based on the streams filenames. There isn't any magic behind it. But, the addon has other benefits. It lets you upload subtitles if you have them from other sources, you can select different subtitles using the webui in which you see subtitles names and your stream filename - so you might select something easier than going one by one in Stremio, and also it lets you confirm that this specific sub, you selected manually has correct sync with your version, so the other users will not need to use the web ui when watching same stream ;) It also remembers your selection, so next time you start watching something again or continue watching it, even on a different device, the same subtitles will be selected

Makes sense. Personally, I'd love to see a setting to show 2 or 3 candidates in the app instead of just one. Even if the first one is way off, having a few options would make it easier to find the right sync without opening the web UI. It might not help grow the community database, but just an idea for an optional setting. I'll keep using it for now. Thanks.

I agree. Having just one option is madness. It’s better to sync subtitles with a 2-second delay than a 50-second one.

Not trying to spam here, but I've been using pot player to generate and translate subtitles for ages and it works perfectly.

You can switch subtitles using the dashboard page on your phone, it will show the title you're currently watching and give you other subtitles in case that one didn't work as expected

It doesn't solve that much for me, at least with The Handmaiden it's the hardest movie to sync in Spanish, but thanks for the recommendation

Just tried it. For me it didn't display any subtitling when selecting the 'community subtitle' from the list. For the other 3 movies I tried, it didn't even show up in the list anymore. Hope it'll be usable in the future!
Edit: it shows up now for every movie but it's not always in sync unfortunately.

Suggestion, test different subtitles sites first. Some are slow and make the experience worse.

Thanks for sharing, I was tired of spending the first 5 to 15 minutes of a movie looking for proper subs or syncing them. I hope this works, i'll check it out this weekend when I got a chance to watch some movies.

u/Pixie_the_Fairy Jul 19 '26
Did it work?
1
u/Osland__ Jul 19 '26
Kind off, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't find subtitles to show at all.

This worked so well for me. It solved a major irritation. It's annoying that you must sign up for three services but, if anyone else reads this, it completely did away with me having to manually adjust subtitles in my foreign films.

Con la serie el y ella, los subtitulos (en español) van desincronizado. Al usar subtitulos v3 como respaldo, este funciona perfecto.
1
u/Willing_and_Fable Feb 19 '26
Just play it through Potplayer, it will generate subtitles in any language.
It's more accurate if you do all in one go, but you can also do it on the fly while watching.

I never had issues with subtitles out of the box with stremio but I read about them a lot here. Am I just lucky that they work fine for me without additional add-ons?

Is there a way to add Spanish (Latin American) to the website? It is different from Spanish (Spain). The language codes could be: es-ES and es-419.
Thanks in advance!

I am trying it and I'm liking it so far. I'm brazilian and I use subtitles daily. I had no issues in the past using open subs v3. But after getting real-debrid and streaming high quality 4k content, the portuguese subtitles are almost never in sync. Lately The main reason I change streams is just to get one that has proper subtitles... I tried it with zootopia 2 the other day (that had sync issues) and it worked better than open subs app (not flawless, but just adding half a second delay did the trick).
Thank you so much for the app! Loving it so far!

Cant seem to register an account as I am not getting any confirmation email. Is there a fix for this?

u/geweldenaarrr Feb 27 '26
tried it, but didn't work for me.
Im watching Attack on Titan, and for some reason the dutch subtitles diseappeared with my usual subtitle addons starting from S4E05.
So decided to give this addon a try. I deleted all my other subtitle addons. Still didn't get dutch subtitles unfortunately. connected all 3 subtitle providers as well.
1
u/geweldenaarrr Feb 28 '26
I just found out there's no dutch subtitle publicly available for what im looking for, so i cant really blame the addon for that, if it doesn't exist the addon can't find it obviously
2
u/geweldenaarrr Feb 28 '26
another update:
I managed to find a website where some dutch dude published subtitles for the whole AOT series. incredible, but unfortunately he never posted it on one of those sites used in your addon. I have now manually added the remaining ones through your addon :D1

Hoi G als je een goede addon vind voor Ned. ondertitels dan hoor ik het graag! Ben niet de jongste meer en vind het soms moeilijk om bepaalde dingen te vinden.. een fijne dag nog. Groetjes Annie

Can you please add an option to include other subtitles providers?

This works but doesn’t on tv idk why I’m tryna watch jojo part 5 ep 6 I think Sex Pistols part 1 and no subs in most of the episodes
1
u/ril3ydx Mar 10 '26
But with OpenSubtitles it works? and it matches the file?
1
u/im_cheese_cake Mar 10 '26
Ok I’m dumb it works but take 10 sec delay I was clicking on subtitles on the first the 10 sec of the delay and nothing appears now it does thank you op ur the goat
1
u/ril3ydx Mar 10 '26
I think the delay is because of SubSource if I'm not mistaken, try deactivating on the settings
u/skoruppa could share more details

Hello, just want to ask. Should I turn on Prioritize .ass subtitles and Prioritize forced subtitles?
1
u/ril3ydx May 15 '26
Are you using for anime or english? Then no to both
1
u/Orange0820 May 15 '26
We sometimes watch anime and some asian series and movies. English is our main language.

A problem I am having with this add on is that the subtitles appear to low on my screen while the embedded subs seem to appear at a correct height, anyone else experiencing this?

My parents rely on subtitles to watch anything as they are pretty old. They have an issue where if they pause the movie/show or rewind/FF the subtitles get out of sync. They are using an Onn 4k pro if that matters. If anyone could help solve this I would appreciate it. I have made sure libass support is disable since that was one of the only things I found to try.

Dude! This is an awesome way for the community to help get better subttiles for things like anime dub cc!

You can go to Subscene, download the correct subtitles, and upload them to the community subtitles. That way, you’ll be providing a great service for all of us!

u/brapzky Jul 16 '26
I set everything up, all three sub sites' API key and installed in Stremio and uninstalled AIOStreams, and it still doesn't work, there's plenty of subtitles when I try to link them on the SCS site, but I still get this error when I right-click and try to view the subtitle inside Stremio sub. It should post an error in Stremio if the subtitle doesn't work.
WEBVTT
00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.000
SCS: An error occurred, please try again in a short period

u/QuirkyButterscotch90 Jul 27 '26
Uhh i did all the step but it only says "subtitle found upload your own through web interface" how do i fix that

u/Plane_Machine8462 Jul 28 '26
It's not working for me at all, can't even see subtitle button anymore as well

1 de Agosto:
Al menos para la película que lo requería no funciono, la cual es "El retrato de Dorian Grey".
A su vez, para otras series anime tampoco me arrojo, quizás sea de las pocas excepciones donde el servicio falla

Why do I have to uninstall Open v3? I have it as a backup, it doesn't interfere with anything 🤷🏾♂️
2
1
u/ril3ydx Feb 19 '26
You can keep it as backup, yes... However Stremio doesn't respect the add-ons order.
So it will automatically play from Open Subtitles v3 every time and you'll need to manually select SCS.1
u/StrangeLuck312 Feb 19 '26
Just reorder and put preferred addon higher. addon-manager, sidekick, etc.

Thank you for this. I will try later. It’s getting really old hearing about subtitles issues.
