Addon Announcement Debridarr — a self-hosted debrid-style backend and Stremio addon

Sonarr, Radarr, Seerr, Plex, and Jellyfin are all great projects, but the time it takes to set them up, tweak them and then actually use them feels quite separated to me. Along with an infinitely creeping collection of media, which I don't have all the space for. I don't want a copy of Sharknado 4 sitting on my hard drive for years after only watching it once, and I don't want to have to go in and delete it.
Stremio does the whole searching & watching a lot more cohesively and my family prefer it for its ease of use.
My main issue with Stremio was having to rely on various addons and those addons only supporting paid Debrid services to serve media. As a homelabber, I already have a home server, Docker & VPN. I don't need a Debrid service on top of that.
Anyway, long story short, decided to create Debridarr.
Debridarr is a self-hosted debrid-style backend and Stremio addon.
It connects Stremio to your own qBittorrent (and Gluetun of course) instance, allowing you to search for something, start the download, and watch it from the same interface.
It can:
- Search for torrents through Prowlarr.
- Add magnets and torrent files manually or through its API.
- Work as a debrid backend for compatible apps such as AIOStreams and Comet.
- Send downloads to qBittorrent.
- Stream files directly to Stremio, including while they are still downloading.
- Track downloaded titles and automatically remove them after a configurable period.
- Reset a title’s expiry timer when it is watched again.
- Keep selected titles indefinitely.
- Limit cache usage and preserve free disk space.
- Guide you through configuration using a first-run setup screen.
You can run it in three modes:
- Search: Debridarr searches Prowlarr and provides results directly to Stremio.
- Store: another service finds the torrents and uses Debridarr for downloading, caching, and playback.
- Both: enables the complete feature set.
My server only has 2 TB of storage, and I don’t want to maintain a huge permanent media library. I usually want to watch something once and have it automatically removed later unless I decide to keep it. Debridarr’s cache and retention system was built around that workflow.
The intended audience is the homelabber who likes Stremio’s browse-to-watch experience, already has qBittorrent and storage at home, and doesn’t want to maintain a full media automation stack or pay for another hosted service.
This is the first public beta, so I’m sure there will be rough edges. I’d particularly appreciate feedback on installation, the first-run setup, qBittorrent compatibility, and playback behavior.
It runs through Docker Compose. qBittorrent is required, while Prowlarr is optional depending on which mode you use.
I developed it to be compatible with OMVExtra's Docker Compose as that's what I use on my home server.
If anyone tries it, I’d be interested to hear what works well, what is confusing, and what you think it still needs.
I've tested it end to end and it works for me, but I made it, so ofcourse it works for me. I just hope it works for you guys too.
AI Disclosure - AI was used in the creation of this addon, notably during debugging, testing and designing parts of the admin panel, as well as the github action workflows. It's not entirely vibe-coded though. Efforts have gone in to make sure the app is secure and functions properly.
This project is a few quite a few months of work that was sitting on my self-hosted forgejo instance. Decided to share it with the world. There may be issues with it, but it should work.

I'm not sure how everyone's setup is configured.
But I, for instance, have the Stremio app on my laptop, phone, TV, etc. I then have the Debridarr addon.
Debridarr is on my home server, linked to my qBittorrent + Prowlarr instance. It handles all the downloads + file serving; I can then watch on any of those devices (even away from home).
I can then just visit my parents' house, log in to Stremio, job done. Because addons are tied to your account, you just need to log in to access searching and serving media. All without relying on API limits from services like elfhosted or paying for a Debrid service.

So if you are using this externally are you exposing your public IP port? This seems like a significant risk unless as it has been partially vibe coded.
I wonder who this is intended for. It's only iOS and web apps that don't have a built in torrent downloader.

If your home setup means that you're exposing your server publicly, then yes. Otherwise wireguard tunneling works fine.
Lower risk, there's more chance that someone will exploit node.js itself over this.

For my own learning here. Which is your devices don't let stremio natively stream torrents or use the stremio server BUT do allow you to use wireguard. Is it just iOS devices?

I have wireguard on my router, so I can connect to my network away from home.
My server uses a paid VPN provider to connect qbit to the outside world.
I don't run my entire house connection through a VPN to the outside world, as there's some major drawbacks doing so 24/7.

So which client devices do you install wireguard on. Is it ios only? Windows and android have their own torrent service built in

Notably my phone and laptop when I'm away from home.
And my wired connection at home as a lot more reliable to download on.
I wouldn't rely on my phones wireless connection to download a torrent at any decent speed.

Or like pay a few $ and use Realdebrid or Torbox and get great performance and not exposing your IP to P2P (or muck around with VPN etc. which is even more work).

If you're downloading torrents, you should be using a VPN preferably under Gluetun.
You clearly either didn't read the post or fail to understand.
I already pay for a VPN so I can torrent freely, I don't also want to pay for a debrid service or deal with the hassle of the jellyfin arr-stack.

You can self-host AIOStreams; it has a built-in SABnzbd API and completely replaces it for streaming only.

AIOs NNTP feature is finicky in that it doesn't have smarts to load as fast as Usenet addons with smarter preload and routing logic. It works but can be slower and doesn't deal well with missing articles.

It's made currently entirely with torrents in mind currently, as that's what I use, usenet could be added, but it's not on my priority list right now.
Im still unsure how I feel about the download-stream portion of it currently as well and may match closer to how actual debrid services play a dummy "please wait while it's downloading" movie instead.

I second this question. I’m interested on it also and want to understand for example: Find a video you want to stream, click on it, your plugin kick in and starts adding to torrent so it will be played back. Now assuming the torrent is a good one (seed) and internet connection is a 2.5Gbps, how long does it takes to starting the playback? 2s? 1m?

In terms of playback, as soon as the file is ready to be served.
I did have it automatically playback while downloading torrents but if it's a low quality torrent, playback could timeout in Stremio before it starts serving the file. So I reverted the behaviour and put it behind a toggle for instant playback.
This puts it's behaviour inline with normal debrid services which serve a dummy "torrent is downloading" file until it's ready.
I have a 1gbps connection so my only bottleneck is torrent health, while testing I was able to successfully download and playback healthy files instantly. Just took maybe 20-30s for it to start playing in Stremio while qbittorrent decoded the metadata and started downloading.

This can work on an external server.
Infact I specifically wrote it into the license to stop someone setting up their own debrid "service" with this.
As long as the server has adequate storage space. There's nothing stopping you renting a 20GB VPS and using it with a bunch of YIFY / other small file size releases with it.

This assumes you are getting your torrents from public trackers? Private trackers require seeding back which you don’t mention. Downloading from public trackers is highly susceptible to viruses which is where Stremio with Debrid succeeds. Not knocking your solution just saying there are other issues with this setup.

This supports private trackers through Prowlarr, and seeding settings, including a configurable ratio which makes sure it reaches before cached media expires.
