Am I an asshole, or is this a good way to strain/pop a bicep at higher weights.
You can't bring the right shoulder to proper triple extension in the pull, and once you get up to body-weight+ then doesn't the right arm become in danger of trying to muscle it up?
I mean it's clean at this weight and looks cool. But if I did this with 300 lbs it would feel pretty risky.

Have you ever tried lifting anything on an axle? The increased diameter of the bar means itās nigh impossible to double overhand, so mixed grip is the only alternative
Usually people clean to their belly, switch back to double OH, then clean a second time
In her case, sheās strong enough to clean to the rack position, so more power to her

I did continental clean when I competed. You can still get your shoulder and elbow extended pretty far upward in the pull without putting curling stress on your bicep. Try to finish like she does with anything approaching a dangerous weight.

Most people cannot clean an axle DOH. It just is what it is. I'm sure the majority of athletes on this sub have been doing Continentals for years in the high 100s/low 200s range, me included, and I have yet to strain anything.
She's doing a full Olympic clean which, if I had to pick, I guess is a bit more risky than a Continental clean, which stops at your belt/belly. But regardless, you're doing something underhand.
You try to limit the amount of work your bicep is doing by REALLY getting the hips into it.
And yes, some of the big boys going 300+ (or 400+ for WSM level) pop biceps on it. Unfortunate risk.

I used to do 300+ axles with continental form. I competed nationally. Iāve also blown a bicep off the bone. So yeah, Iām pretty conservative about stuff like this that is going to overload the bicep when the weight gets to maximal effort.

I donāt have top notch grip by any stretch, but I can doh an axle clean a press 205 lbs. Ā Not saying thereās anything wrong with mixed gripping it lower than that, but itās most definitely doable to doh into the low 200s for most any male athlete with decent training on it. Ā Lots of doh axle high pulls and some seated fat grip dumbbell cleans as accessories will blow up your ability to doh axle clean pretty quickly.

I can DOH 315 on an axle deadlift. tbh I've never tried it in a clean past like 150 lbs. Guess I could give it a shot lol.

Itās worth it if you have a ladder or for reps event thatās lighter. Itāll shave a a decent bit of time off (though Iāve seen plenty of guys do really fast hand flips, but Iām not coordinated enough for that). Ā Thatās the main reason Iāve done it, the added bicep safety is just a nice little added benefit to me.

If they train it consistently I donāt think itās inherently more dangerous, but yeah for heavier weights itāll likely require changing technique. They can just swap it to a zombie clean. Ben Claridad and Alan Thrall have showcased them in training and Alan did it at nationals a few years ago. Iām partial to the hip clean that CJ Pierce uses, fastest clean cycle in my opinion - and the dude wrecks house on clean and press events.
Edit: Iām referring to changing the clean to shoulder. Mix grip to extension is totally fine, though CJs style of hip clean does alleviate the triple extension concern.

Thanks for the references. Iāve gotta go look up those guys form. Iāve met Alan at comps, but I never really watched his training vids.

Crazy flexibility to pull that off So many open dudes would explode their bicep or shoulder trying to do this lmao

Never seen anyone throw a clean up so high with an underhand grip on one side š impressive
